Worthy upgrade from the Gen 5 Extreme

    • Written by from Toronto

I would recommend upgrading to the Gen. 6 from any other generation of Apple Extreme, including the Gen. 5. Page load speed on Safari appears to be noticeably faster and the download time on an iTunes movie is dramatically shorter. Set-up, of course, is an absolute breeze. My Macbook Pro w. Retina rapidly found the plugged-in station and launched Airport Utility (use latest version) with its extremely simple set-up protocol. If you have an existing wireless network, perhaps with a printer (as in my case) or other wireless peripheral, simply assign the current network name to the new Extreme base station and the peripheral(s) should all connect. A firmware upgrade was immediately signalled on the Extreme icon in the Airport Utility, (a red circle with the #1 in it), so ensure that you update the firmware. I hope this feedback helps.

    Day 1- Best Router Ever

    • Written by from Frederick

Coming from the 5th Gen AirPort Extreme, I was a bit skeptical. But after reading positive reviews on here, I took a chance. IT BLOWS THE 5TH GEN OUT OF THE WATER. I'm talking I have 56 Mbps download speeds from Comcast and the older model was sluggish. This one is like having 4G LTE in my house. Little to no hesitation. Lightning fast. Epic success.

First Apple product I've ever returned

    • Written by from Vancouver

Dropped connections. Having to power recycle many times a day. Hanging.
After an Apple history daring back to the Apple ][ I returned my first product for a refund and reverted to my Apple AirPort Extreme G1

    MORE POWAAAA!!!!

    • Written by from union city

Wow! This thing is the real deal. I upgraded my wifi network with the new AirPort Extreme. Tested the speed with my iPhone sitting in the farthest section of my house from the router. Look at this speed! 27MB/s download and 10MB/s upload.

    Old setup:
    Previous generation AirPort Extreme
    2 Airport Expresses extending network

    New setup:
    New AirPort Extreme
    Previous Gen Extreme extending network

Unfortunately I didn't test the speed of the previous setup, but the speed is like night and day. AND none of my devices are wirelss AC compatible. All are just wireless N. My PS3 was wired to one of the Expresses and showed 2MB/s download. Now it's wired to the extending Extreme and it shows 13.3 MB/s download. That's a BIG jump in speed. A lot of the increase is probably due to getting rid of the inferior Expresses, and using the old extreme as the extender. But whatever.... Huge seat of the pants difference. if you already own a previous generation Extreme, its time for an upgrade. MORE POWAAAA!!!!

    Best Router I've ever used

    • Written by from London

Let me say first that I'm an IT professional and I have worked in the field for 10 years. We had a number of aging Cisco enterprise routers at our office that needed replacement. At first I was hesitant to purchase Apple networking equipment because Cisco is the norm in the enterprise and anything less is usually a set up for failure. As a test I decided to take the plunge and purchase a 2013 Extreme for our Guest Network which usually has around 20 clients connected daily. The setup was easily done on my ipad mini. I've had the extreme online for over a month now with no issues at all (No restarts). Users tell me the range and speed are much better than the Cisco router. I am very impressed by this little unit! It was a little challenging installing it in the ceiling but a little creativity and I had it installed in 15 min. The bosses are so pleased that we will probably replace our main corporate wifi with a new extreme unit very soon. Nice work Airport team!

    Easiest setup

With my 20 years of computer experience. This is the most easiest router that I ever setup. And it was setup with my iOS devices. No computer is needed. Great job apple.
    Highly recommend for first timer.

    I'm Extreme(ly) Impressed

    • Written by from San Tan Valley

Prior to AirPort Extreme I was averaging an inconsistent 15-22Mbps on my internet speed tests with a NG 802.11n router. Now, with AirPort Extreme, my speed is averaging a very consistent 62-64Mbps. Have two Macs and an iPad on the network. Grandson is jealous.

Great performance and setup is easy

    • Written by from Reston

I can simply add to previous comments that this new version of Airport Extreme seems to be a huge upgrade. Not yet having any 802.ac devices, I can only rate the 802.n network performance. I'm not positive the range is significantly better than my last generation AE (it may be somewhat better) but the connection speed is definitely faster.

My 2013 iMac was getting about 25-30 Mbps on speedtest.net before; with the new AE it's now averaging 50 Mbps or more (Verizon FIOS connection).

I used my old AE to extend my wireless network and the process of transferring settings from old to new, and then using the old one to extend the network, couldn't possibly be easier. I've worked with numerous Netgear and Linksys routers in the past and nothing compares to ease Apple's process.

    Boosted internet speed 10x

    • Written by from Philadelphia

A few months ago I upgraded my internet to Fios. The free router that came with it, placed one room away, gave me 6 mbps download speeds and a choppy connection. So I decided to get an Airport Extreme.

I installed the Airport Extreme in minutes after hooking it up. In fact, my Macbook immediately opened the Airport Utility tool without me prompting it to. It was surprisingly seamless, but this is what you should expect from a collection of Apple devices!

My download speed is now 70mbps. (Note: this beauty is sitting right on my desk).

Now I'm thinking of returning it to get a Time Capsule for automatic backups...

Conclusion: If you're undecided, BUY ONE. Just to try it out; you can always return it. But I guarantee you won't want to.

Best Airport Apple has made to date

    • Written by from San Francisco

We replaced last generations airport extreme with the new one and what an improvement. We have Comcast with 50mbs download and with the new Airport Extreme we can get that download speed throughout the house and not just in the office where the Airport Extreme is located. Before the new Airport Extreme we were dropping our speeds down to as little as 5mbs in parts of the house. If you like to stream videos and who doesn’t, this is a great upgrade.

    Not comparable with lynksys

    • Written by from Umatilla

I purchased airport extreme to replace my old lynksys router and now find I cant get the wifi I had with my Lynksys which I could go anywhere in and around my house with no problems, now I am stuck in my living room, bedroom or back porch. Not near the distance coverage of my old lynksys for twice the money.

    Great technology, badly implemented

    • Written by from Glendale

Had issues with my old Airport network setup (~2010ish), upgraded everything (!) (internet service, attached storage and of course this new Airport Extreme, from my local Apple store) Some smaller issues as discussed in most reviews, incl. the new Airport Utility, but most importantly:

Initially, not too shabby, even saw some speed improvements using my older MacBook(s) when it works. However, the same old issues returned almost immediately: unstable filesharing resulting in frequent hangs, to the point of not restarting remotely, having to literally pull the plug since there's still no on/off switch. If the old Airport is anything to go by, after a couple of months it will be so worn down that it will get easier...

This is aggravated by the Finder, which despite a supposed multi-thread rewrite completely hangs as well if even only one drive hangs (like the above, even after disconnecting) . Sometimes to the point where it can't be relaunched and then blocks the Mac from restarting too, requiring a hard shutdown just like the Airport Extreme itself.

The Guest Network feature is still borderline pointless: it is tied to the same Access Control than the main network, leaving you with 2 choices:
    - Having to add every . single . guest to the list even if they just want to pop on the internet for a few minutes, going through the hassle of having them find their MAC address etc., which defeats the purpose of a G-U-E-S-T network
    - Or turning off Access Control completely, making the main network substantially less secure, defeating the purpose of that feature...

The technology is nice, but badly implemented; if it won't affect you, great. But if you have a usage case similar to mine, and you will run into these issues several times a day, it becomes tiresome quickly. Hopefully this will help you to avoid it.

    Extremely easy!

    • Written by from Roseville

I didn't really need a new router but after making the switch from PC to a Mac and having the change go so seamless, I had to get it.

    The router is:

    Easy set-up
Capable of configuring if you want
    Secure

Best of all, I don't need to go down stairs to reset the router once a week.

When you become complacent with your equipment you don't know what you're missing, well this router has it.

    Excellent, Fast, Easy!

    • Written by from Calgary

A friend purchased this new Airport Extreme to replace the router side of the ISP provided router/cable modem. I set it up for him. I have setup Linksys, D-Link, Netgear routers numerous times. This is the easiest most intuitive setup I've ever experienced. I was so impressed I went out and got myself one and did the same thing. I'm getting amazing speeds (on a 100Mbps service). All of my devices are faster and the range is increbile. Highly recommended!

    Another amazing Apple product!

    • Written by from Wasaga beach

Apples done it again! They solved every one of my home networking problems that i'v ever had over the years with one simple easy to use product. This is the first Airport Extreme I have owned and just like all Apple products it works fantastic. I had it all setup and working within 5 minutes of getting it out of the box and the rest of my devices connected (Mac Book pro, iMac, 2 Apple TV's, iPhone 5, and 2 windows computers) Thanks to this amazing router I am now able to stream 1080p movies to both Apple TV's simultaneously without losing my internet on my Mac Book where before I would lose my internet streaming one movie to one Apple TV... Keep the products coming Apple!!

Easy setup BIG jump for me

    • Written by from middle village

Haven't upgrade my router for like 6 years (Netgear G), so I pay$45/month for 30/mb down and 2/mb up and I'm only able to get those speed on my MBP connected with ethernet. All my wifi enabled device only getting 10 down and .5 up, after I swap the Airport Extreme my wifi speed tripled to 30 down and 2 up which what I should get.

APE is expensive than other N router on the market that can give you the same speed but there is no doubt that APE is the easiest router to setup and configure.

Replaced a generation 3 Extreme with this. Wow! No buffering issues between Tivo's. Signal reaches a block away from my house. Tivo stream works with this router and doesn't require a wired network. The time machine backup is quick and works like a charm.

    AirPort Extreme

Very Happy with the new AirPort Extreme! I've had a Belkin Router and after less than a year it has been giving me problems. I recently purchased the AirPort Extreme and I am very amazed at how easy it was to install and how powerful it was! I recommend every one to purchase this item.
