Overpriced access point. Great access point poor router...

    • Written by from Binghamton

How can you say this is a router when it doesn't support QoS? With VOIP being more common these days and it requiring QoS especially when gaming is on the same network, how can you have both without QoS? You can't! This is a huge mistake on Apple's part and I want to be a convert but can't for this reason. However what saved this product from being returned is this... If you buy a real router with QoS and put it between your modem and the AirPort Extreme and make the AirPort Extreme Bridge Only (Access point) you get great coverage. That is all this product is good for (i.e. as an access point) if you are using the latest technologies on your network, that is, gaming and VOIP which are most people. Hello Apple wake up! You got billions in the bank spend it on getting your products up-to-date.

    Excellent product

After spending years suffering through PC challenges, I bought my high schoolers two Mac Pros and changed from Net Gear to my AirPort Extreme. I was worried it wouldn't go smoothly, but those were unfounded. It was easy, simple, and the speeds are smokin fast now. Connected my printer to my AE, and both laptops picked it up and printed with no problem. I love Apple products and will buy nothing else. Another note...the UNiversity Village Apple store was terrific as well, in their help and customer service. Well done Apple....

    Sufficient but to simple.

    • Written by from Milwaukie

Easy to set up and get going but for a router at this price point it is woefully lacking in administrative features. I don't see how it benefits Apple to hide or remove extremely basic options like MAC authentication and parental controls that I have with my freebie rented router from my ISP. Good coverage and if all you want to do is plug something in and go this is adequate. If you want to anything else at all this will not meet your needs.

    Expensive but not worth

I was in need for multiple long range routers for my 60 units hotel. Sales person at the local store told me that this router is the longest range and one of the would cover the entire store (open space of course), so I though that if I buy three of those, it would at least work in all the 60 units(next to each other, only obstacle is NON sound proof guest room walls). Well it did not, three router did not even cover half the hotel when I put them in drop down ceiling. I returned all three after few days.

    Unreliable

    • Written by from West Covina

I was so excited that my mom bought a new router. Only thing about setting up the router is that you need an apple device in order to set it up. Unfortunately, our home computer is still a PC and the other electronic devices we have are apple. But overall the set up was easy. First day with the new router we had no problems. The days after that were a disaster!!!! Internet kept dropping throughout the day and was never to have a stable internet connection. A weird thing was that the internet was only working on our iphones and ipad and not on our macbook or PC. Because of this, the connection with our printer is also disabled. We would always have to reset it once the internet came back on and when the internet didn't come back on and we needed to print something that becomes a problem! My family consists of two college students so the internet is always needed to do assignments! Overall, do not buy this product!!!

    surprisingly no USB 3.0

    • Written by from Long Island City

I am disappointed by the USB port being 2.0 and not 3.0 - at this price point! I connect an extra HDD as a network-shared drive and USB 3.0 would be of great advantage. Otherwise I'd be very happy. I also have a TC for backups as part of the wi-fi network.

Once you go mac you never go back.I have had different routers and I may say since I had been using apple routers I would never buy anything else. Well built very strong signal easy to use and you can set up from you're I phone or any cell phone . You can change any set up on the router with you're cell and take charge. Find the router that is best for you but make sure it's an apple router. You will not be disappointed. Save some money now and this will be the only router you will need. Buy more than one apple router to reach those areas that are weak or no signal and they will connect automatically and find all the apple router in you're home and give you great signal coverage.

    Airport Extreme - Airport Express

    • Written by from ALAMO

Hi - I initially purchased a airport extreme, and it worked perfectly, but figured if one is good then more is better - NOT. I went out purchased another Extreme, and a airport express to cover my multi level home. After many calls, and software updates, they don't like to play together. Meaning, I hard wired the 2 extremes together and extended my wireless network, and this is when the problems started. I would suggest the product as a single function device, and avoid networking them together,

    Not reliable

    • Written by from SAN FRANCISCO

I have to restart it every week or so. After a few days of use, the bandwidth trickles down to about 1.5 Mbps. It's worse if I turn on the 5GHz band. After I restart it, it seems to recover for a while. Annoying. Shoddy work, Apple.

    Too many bugs

    • Written by from Sunnyvale

Looks like Apple start having the problem with quality control. All latest products are super buggy. This router is not an exclusion. The most annoying part is you need to restart it every day if you want to have the maximum speed (Driver restart). This problem is present in many cheap routers.

How to do the diagnostic fast:

    1. You need to have an Iphone.
    2. Download cloudcheck and speedtest from app store.
    3. Check the wifi speed with cloudcheck. Iphone 4 should show 30-40 mbps (2.4G) and Iphone 5 should show around 40 Mbps (2.4G) and 90 Mbps (5G).
    4. Check the broadband speed with speedcheck. The speed should be around the speed you pay for or maximum speed of your wifi.

In my case the wifi speed is usually good, but the broadband speed shows 4 Mbps instead of 50 Mbps . This is the time when I need to restart the router. After the restart the speed is back to 50 Mbps.

Apple please, please, please, please, please fix it.

    Best wireless router to date!

    • Written by from Fort Dix

I have nothing, but positive things to say about the AirPort Extreme. Quick story why I took a chance and purchased this product. I am a FIOS customer and running their Quantum 50/25 Mbps. For those who are familiar with their initial issue wireless router know that it is pretty pathetic running on G band. I live in 1800 sqft condo and the router is located in the living room. I was lucky to get a signal up the stairs if at all. So, I decided to buy their N band wireless router which improved the range, but not by much. I was getting roughly 20/10 Mbps throughout the house. After going through and reading a lot of the positive reviews on here I decided to shell out the $184 and purchase it. Best decision ever! I bridged the AirPort Extreme through the FIOS router and now getting 58/38 Mbps throughout the house. Its pretty insane of the difference it makes.

We have avery large old house with 2-foot thick stone walls. Had been having difficulty getting the signal throughout the house from the basement. Old one did a good job with a few well-placed express as boosters. The new tower-like extreme is even better (though admittedly, I ran a wire out through an air vent to get the base station out of the basement) and get a much better signal throughout our entire house and up to the 3rd floor as well.

Rock solid reliability but signal strength in my house is horrible.

    • Written by from Hacienda Heights

I can't believe I need 2 Airport Extremes (connected via ethernet) to get full coverage in my 1300sq ft house. They are not near any other electronics.

I had the previous gen and thought the new one would have greater range (We'll see when the next iphone gets AC I hope), tried using the old one as a wireless repeater (didn't work too well, would always lose connection at one side of the house) then finally figured you can hook up ethernet cable to 2 airport extremes so they both transmit.

I read that a work around for poor wifi coverage on the iphone 5 was switching from WPA2 to WEP. While it did improve signal reliability. What a BS work around. Maybe my 1960 house has lead walls, but if the signal has to pass through a closet or 2 walls. Your signal will drop and your phone will say ''You are not connected to the internet''. I had to use LTE in my master bedroom and bathroom (the newest APExtreme was 25' away behind 2 walls. before I hooked up the older extreme via ethernet as a second router.

    Another grand slam for Apple!

    • Written by from Boise

This router is simply amazing. The speed and range is crazy, but I'm most impressed with ease of setup. I upgraded from the previous generation Airport Extreme to this bad boy. Using the Settings app on my iPhone, I found the router and I was asked if I was replacing my old router. I said yes and it automatically moved my settings over from my old Airport and prompted me to plug in my wires and that was it. My network downtime was 38 seconds (yes, I timed it). This, along with a new 802.11ac adapter for my desktop and I went from an average of 160 Mbps to 866 Mbps. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

I spent a lot of time researching the different routers because I was having issues with dropped connections and losing connections in certain areas of my house. I will mention my modem is in the worst possible place in my house, the back bedroom in the corner. With my old router, the only computer that had wifi beyond the living room was my Mac. When I was at the apple store purchasing my MacBook Pro, the salesperson informed me that an airport would be covered under my apple care. So I did some more research and since almost all of my wireless devices are apple I figured this would be the best move. Set up was extremely easy on my MacBook Pro and all other apple devices. I will say that trying to connect my Dell was a bit harder. I recommend downloading AirPort Utility for anyone who has a Windows running computer. Once I did it, there was only a few more steps that I needed to take. I'm pretty good with computers, so if you aren't connecting this to an apple computer and aren't really tech savvy, this may not be the best router for you. I have amazing range, took my computer to the backyard and still had 3 bars. Before also I would only be able to have two devices connected without seeing an issue with connectivity. As I'm writing this we have an iPod, iPad, Apple Tv, Dell Computer, and MacBook Pro all connected and the connection is perfect on all the devices. Moving forward I will be sticking with all Apple products!

we had problems with our wireless system in our house for the past few months. We have a 3800 square foot old home (concrete block!!) and all of our products are apple. it was a nightmare getting signal across our home. We had an airport extreme from 2009. we were always dropping signal. we replaced our cable modem, had new wiring, purchased several extenders and still could not get signal across our house. We read bunch of reviews and saw pretty good reviews on this gem. WOW! are we impressed! this thing works right out of the box. it was an easy set up as expected. now the signal across our home is so strong! the signal never drops. absolutely the best! we highly recommend this product! you will not be disappointed.

10 to 20 seconds it's WiFi: On, the next 10 to 20 seconds it's WiFi: Looking for Networks.

No steady connection lasting more than 30 seconds.

Can't reliably access printers, other computers, or internet. This is very damaging to us.

When I bought my MacBook Air 13" i5, 4GB RAM and 128GB Flash Storage, I bought this AirPort Extreme. I had a slight problem getting it connected and everything because Verizon isn't the best internet provider. After getting it to work with a green light on and the internet actually working, it works flawlessly ! I live in a 1,000+ sq ft home and I get connection through the entire house, I go outside that has 3 acres, I can still get 2-3 connection bars all the way out there. I haven't had a single problem with it since I bought it and I'm glad I bought it. Lightning fast internet, long distance connection, it's just a perfect device !
