    Faster and wider!

    • Written by from Ridgewood

New AirPort Extreme(AE) is really great so far. Especially download speed of wired and also wireless internet has been improved. Same faster speed in both wired and wireless. So I disconnected my ethernet cable from my laptop and I made it free.

I used Netgear WNDR3300 (5-6years) before. It has a short range of WiFi and I always doubted it's not working fully in enough speed with my internet provider's modem. AirPort Extreme solved these issues at once. Full strength bar even there are many walls and it's faster. It seems it works in full performance with other Apple products.

Also I used another AirPort Express to extend range of my WiFi but it doesn't need anymore. New AE covers whole area even outside with better speed.

    --- USB 2 ---

One thing I don't like is it has USB 2.0. I guess most routers recently released has USB 3.0. I didn't test yet for this but I think it might be slow if I try to use it as NAS with external HDD for video editing or something needs heavy traffic between computer and AE even it's wired. I don't know why Apple chose USB 2 for this such a futuristic product. I want to believe there is big reason.

I have no serious benchmark data for this so I don't know how bad is, but I will give 4 of 5 overall just because of USB 2.0. Other than it's SUPER.

    --- No NTFS ---

Also as you can imagine, it doesn't support Windows' NTFS formatted HDDs. It made me to make a decision how I need to use this as NAS and which HDD I need to format in Mac format since I have so many big NTFS HDDs and I'm still using NTFS HDD as a media hub.

I'm happy with this and I don't regret with this purchase but if you are planning to use this router as NAS, you need to think more seriously. As I know, most of users really felt in love with it because of internet speed, easy hookup and wide range but not about USB 2 and no NTFS.

    -----

    One more thing,

I never used to put my router on my desk or somewhere visitors can see easily because usually it was ugly. But it's not same story for AE. My new AE is on my desk now. Very good contrast with other black products. :)

    Flawless and fast!

    • Written by from La Plata

Simply stated, this is a genuinely fast upgrade to the previous generation AE, which I replaced with this model two days ago. Much faster home Wi-Fi in all areas of my house. Signal now strong enough to stream outside by the pool where before I barely got any signal at all. Great Apple design and virtually foolproof setup. Took me 7 minutes to be up and running from box opening to surfing the web. Highly recommended.

    Extremely pleased!

My old AirPort Extreme got wiped out in an electrical storm the day this new one came out. I had to wait for a new one to be shipped from China but I am glad I waited. This new one can power 5 bars in areas that used to only see 1 or 2 with the previous model. Thanks Apple! I love it and I'm actually glad the old one got fried or I would never have upgraded.

Does what 3 Airport Express stations could not do!

    • Written by from San Mateo

I was struggling with a large estate that has thick walls and no option to run ethernet cables. No matter what I did the coverage and speed was very intermitted. Dramatic fluctuations of coverage with in the same room!
Replaced all 3 (new model) Airport Express stations with one new Airport Extreme. All problems solved!

Going to install some more this friday in an other location.

Great wifi router, flawed product packaging

    • Written by from RICHMOND

This is a very well-designed Wi-Fi router that is extremely easy to set up and to configure both on Macs and Windows. Via the included app, it basically sets itself up automatically after you input your desired Wi-Fi network name and password. There are of course also advanced options which you may set manually if you desire to.

This AirPort Extreme performs better than the prior version, even without 801.11ac devices in the network. With 802.11ac devices, it will be even faster.

This contains more antennas inside the device than prior versions and also incorporates beamforming for faster wifi. The antennas sit higher and off the table top in the device which aids performance as well. When using my wifi network, things are noticeably more speedy than before.

The design and foot print is also an improvement. It takes up less space on your desk or shelf since it has a smaller footprint, even though it's taller. And, I like the look of it better than prior versions as well.

A note about the product box: be careful opening the box, if you have it at an angle while pulling the lid off, the device will fall out and could be damaged. Also, after unboxing it, you cannot replace the base of the box because it will get stuck inside the box and be very difficult to remove after that. I recommend you put the base in sideways if you want to store the box. You will see what I mean after you get this item.

In summary, Apple has another winner in this latest version of the AirPort Extreme! This is a worthy upgrade from prior versions, even if you don't yet have any 802.11ac devices since it also works with 802.11a/b/g and n devices, and you will be ready for any future 802.11ac device that you may get, which is the new standard.

    Highly recommended Wi-Fi router.

    Incredible speed

    • Written by from Redondo Beach

I purchased 2 of these puppies to replace my 2 Gen5 Extremes. I upgraded my TWC to 50 Mbps and now I can get 50 Mbps EVERYWHERE in my house when previously I was getting 50Mbps only close to the router and 20 Mbps everywhere else. These puppies are FAST! setup was a charm as it allowed me to automatically copy the configuration of my old extremes, and cleaned up afterwards ready to sell them on amazon.

I now get 50 Mbps on all my devices, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, 3 iPads, and 2 iPhone 5s, no matter where I am.

Incredible, does more than advertised actually

    • Written by from lexington

I have an airport extreme only 5 months only (5th generation), but when I picked up this new Airport Extreme with the redesigned antenna geometry, and the Ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi; I KNEW I'd get better bi-di communication on my brand new 2013 macbook air, which I do, but what turned out a real shocker is Im getting around 30% faster www cruising on my Ipad 4th gen and my Ipad mini! Why didn't apple Inc. advertise "Hey, not ONLY will you get blazing better speeds with the new Ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi,...but ALSO you'll notice faster speeds on your Ipads and other devices"

My wifi on my 2012 Macbook Pro is about 20% or more faster on downloads and MUCH faster refresh on known sites.

I was planning on getting faster speeds on ONLY my new Macbook Air, and FURTHER stronger signal strength. But additionally a HUGE PLUS is my now-faster Ipad communications and home networking speeds.

Was it worth the $200 considering I had a basically a new (older model) airport extreme? Absolutely YES. WORTH IT!

    AMAZING!

    • Written by from Norwalk

I must admit… This is the first time I ever wrote a review on any item of which I purchased. The Airport Extreme certainly deserves a review! This router has literally transformed my house into a fully internet accessible home connecting every single wireless device; and there are a bunch! I pad’s, I phone’s laptops, DVD players and a bunch more. It even reaches places that I never thought would reach! For instance my porch area on the other side of the house. The range of this beats in incredible! I walked well over one hundred feet into my neighbor’s yard and I still had 3-4 reception bars. Amazing! I highly recommend this item to anyone who wants the very best internet access. It’s a little pricy but well worth it. The set-up is a piece of cake. Literally took me a few minutes!

    Awesome—except for one thing

    • Written by from Seattle

LOADS faster than the last AirPort Extreme—my faster Internet connection seemed to make no difference until today, when I installed the new AirPort extreme. My digital media player shows a particularly huge improvement—up to almost 34 Mbps where 14 or 15 Mbps was as good as it got.

I'm glad I didn't get the Time Machine flavor, though—because the packaging is not well thought out. My AirPort Express ended up falling out of the box, hitting my coffee table—*breaking* a serving tray in the process—and crashing to the floor. A hard drive contained within would have been toast.

    Finally........

    • Written by from Burlington

I've tried several routers over the years, and have not had much luck. Finally went with this, despite the cost. It's worth every penny. Easy to set up, very easy to use, great signal range throughout my large ranch house (about 1700 sq. feet). Very happy with the purchase, would highly recommend. I'm a recent Apple convert and have had excellent support any time I have needed it, and all of my purchases have been top notch.

I have owned MANY WiFi routers over the years and this Airport Extreme is by far the best. Super easy to configure yet has the key configuration options you need such as port forwarding and WPS printer setup. It was really easy to extend my network from an Airport Time Capsule with the Airport Utility, just a few clicks and I have excellent coverage in all parts of a large one story home. Pay no attention to those one-star reviewers who obviously have other issues with their networks.

    Fast and Furious...

    • Written by from Oklahoma City

I usually do not write reviews on apple.com but had to on this new device. Frankly, I have often been under whelmed with new and improved products. That would be the case for the previous gen Airport Extreme. It seemed a little better than previous gen but no earth shattering progress.

Not true with this new iteration of the Airport Extreme.
    1. setup. Simply begin by plugging it in. Then pull up the setup menu via utilities and Airport. It will tell you to unplug the cables from your old Extreme and plug into the new.
Once you do that it just takes over and transfers all your connection info. It took about 10 minutes because after it had copied my settings over it downloaded a firmware update.
    2. speed. I have a 60mbs hard wired connection. My house is around 3,000 square feet all on one level. My office is located in one corner. The opposite corner diagonally from this room is where we have a media room. In that room my speed tests using macbook air, Kindle hd, cell phones, etc... showed a consistent 15mbs. I also would have times when using either my apple tv or roku box.......and then using a wireless tablet etc..... where the speed would slow down to the point where the connection would be lost. This is history. I now get a constant 30-40mbs using internet speed test in the same room. A BIG jump.
    Very happy

    Great Router, great range

    • Written by from Chatsworth

This is my first Apple router, I usually would buy the other brands like netgear because I found them to be fast and have a greater range, I was excited that apple had finally released a new Router, I went and purchased this router right away, setup was SUPER easy, took 2 minutes literally, I love how consistent the connection is, never a drop in speeds, I do wish it had an setting where u can increase the power to increase or decrease the range so the whole neighborhood does not see it. But overall I love this router 5 STARS!!

    Great Performance

    • Written by from Aurora

Before I bought this product, I was using the Time Capsule as my router. In the 4-5 hours that I have been using this, I have seen a great increase in speed and performance on my Retina MBP, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and iPad mini. So far this is a great router. It was easy to set up out of the box, and the new design has also increased my WiFi distance.

Pros: Lightweight, easy to set up, huge increase in performance and speed.

    Cons: Cost.

Although the cost is higher, you will see much better performance out of this than many other non apple routers. Well worth the $200.00
