    Poor performance

    • Written by from Lelystad

Wifi signal is horrible, I have 2 of them to have signal in my home.
Performance is horrible, I tried to use it for iTunes, but due to performance issues iTunes will not download to that location.
Backup doesn't work on the Timecapsule due to performance issues.
I used the time capsule as router.... Well it brings back old times, just like a dial up connection..
Apple TV streaming.... nah, forget it.
Apple support??? HA, I would be better of asking my wife.

This all on a stable internet connection of 200Mbits. Got my old router back and my old NAS, all problems are over.

    Time Capsule disappointing

    • Written by from Waban

I purchased a new Airport Time Capsule, and it was relatively easy to set up. It completed a first backup on one computer. So far so good. The next day, I tried to set up a second computer for backup, but the backup disk could not be accessed. Got the message "internal drive needs repair". Having the backup disk crash after just one day of use is unsettling. I now have very little faith in this product as a backup option.

Died after a year, just after warranty expired

    • Written by from San Francisco

I should have learnt my lesson with my first time capsule in grad school which was finicky and crashed once every 4-5 months. It lasted me through 4 years before dying, so when I got a new job, I conveniently forgot how terrible the device was in light of automatic backups.

However I'm really annoyed that just shy of 12 months, the device crashed and no matter how much I reset it, it won't even show up on my computer. $300 wasted!

Apple Guy, but Forced to Return it

    • Written by from Henrico

I love Apple products but I was forced to return it. I honestly rather have the Time Capsule than what I was forced to get because in theory it should work better like most of my experience with Apple. I started with the Time Capsule. It was great initially then the internet crawls after about a day of use. I reset it and within minutes it crawls again. Netflix streaming is impossible. Time Machine backups are painfully slow but my main problem was unreliability. I have 105mps internet with comcast. I could do a speed test and pull in 120mps but yet if I try to load apple.com it lags for literally minutes. I use to work in the Apple store in college and I know my way around osx so I went to the wifi diagnostics tool. The Time Capsule was set to automatic with the same SSID for the 2.4 and 5ghz band but the firmware chose a crowded channel, channel 6 on the 2.4ghz band. I chose channel 3 even though my MacBook Pro was still connecting to 5ghz to see if that would help. It did but only temporarily. At 1st I thought it was my ISP but then I tried my old Netgear router and walla my Apple TV could stream Netflix again. I must have got a lemon I thought so I returned it and got the AirPort Extreme instead. The Time Machine backups were just too slow for me to justify staying with it when I could just connect an external drive to the extreme. So brand new Extreme, guess what happens? Same exact experience! I get on the Apple forums and numerous people are complaining of the same issues. I go to the Apple Genius Bar and they've seen this before but suggest I try another one. After 2 I give up! I ended up getting the Netgear Nighthawk router. It isn't as elegant as Apple's but it's fast and reliable. Also it has USB 3 unlike the USB 2 on Apple's so I actually have faster Time Machine backups. It's been a month and internet hasn't dropped speed once so I know it's not the ISP. Apple please let me know when this is fixed. One of your most loyal fans!

    Great idea poorly executed

    • Written by from Beverly

I had a Time Capsule for a year and a half before it died. That's not lot long after the warranty expired. It simply stopped powering on. Well, at least the hard drive itself is probably fine, so data recovery should be easy, right? Alas, retrieving the physical hard drive is not trivial (although there are sites that provide a walk-through for how to do it.)

This was not my first trouble with the Time Capsule. Once it simply refused further backups, and had to be reformatted before it could be used for backups again.

The idea of automatic backups without user action is great, so I think the *idea* of Time Capsule is terrific. But my experience is that it's unreliable, and there's not much point in an unreliable backup.

    Time capsule = JUNK

    • Written by from Sacramento

I have been a mac/apple fan boy since the late 90's and have had nothing but good things to say; repeated referrals; and constant upgrades. My time capsule is the biggest waste of money ever spent on technology; and to make it even worse no support from apple. Investing several hundred dollars on something that quits far before my cheap external hard drive is an embarrassment.

    Internet & Squeezebox problems

Great idea to have router and backup on one place, but it unexpectedly drops internet connection. The Express side works fine until I set up a network to use Time Capsule then it will not connect with my Logitech players. Customer service could not solve problem.

    Didn't work

    • Written by from Clearwater

I received the 2TB Airport Time capsule for a Christmas gift. Setup was very easy, but it would not read an external hard drive. I tried three different hard drives, the unit would not detect them. When I left the range of the wifi with my iPhone or iPad, I could not reconnect without restarting the Airport. I was very disappointed with the unit. I had it for four days and had to restart it over ten times.

    Router ok-Backup doesn't work

    • Written by from Ventura

Since purchase in July, I have been unable to back up the "time machine" aspect as it will shut down my computer and restart with a significant error message. Have sent these to Apple without a response/fix. Have posted on tech boards without response/fix. Thought that I was making my life easier, but id doesn't work as a back up. Router works fine, so it is a very expensive router. This is from an Apple only person-extremely disappointed with this and Apple's support.

I'd like to like it but..

    • Written by from Minneapolis

Instead of what I guess I've grown accustom to with Apple products just 'working' upon plug in, this unit was not the case. As someone that's installed many routers, setup dozens of networks, and am pretty well versed with computers, I expected setting up this device to be a breeze. My old Linksys router is shot, so I splurged $300 on this unit to contribute to my growing Apple monopoly. So far, its been somewhat of a disaster. After hours of phone calls to Apple and my ISP, I still do not have it setup. I ended up plugging my old router back in and just settled for its lagging speeds. Occasionally I will plug in the ethernet line to time capsule, only to get a blinking orange light that states I do not have an ISP address. If every other router (I tried a generic B router as well) can detect this, why can't Time Capsule? I do no know. Apple has told me I need to contact my ISP, as the issue is on their end, but its not, if I am able to plug my computer in via ethernet or use other routers. I'll give it a few days, if not, I guess I'll be returning this unit. I really had high expectations :-(

    Don't BUY this product.

    • Written by from Doral

I love Apple products but I had to come to check the review to see if I was the only one with problems. I'm tired of having my backup fail to run because it is inaccessible. Even the Airport Utility can't find it at time and I need to constatly reboot it. It doesn't matter if it's ping-able or it's wifi is on, it's own Airport Utility can't find it and the Time Machine backup utilities fails.

It boggles my mind that they have yet to get an update to fix this after over a year that this product has been out.

    • Written by from Picton

Do NOT trust this product with your files.

My Time Capsule has been generating error messages for the past week. This weekend, I followed its suggestion to rebuild due to some sort of corrupted directory.

One hour later, every single file is gone.

i have bought the air port time capsule to replace seagate media center.
the seagate was a loot better.
i was able to access it from tv without computer and able to do east tm backup.

really bad that its not accessible from tv-dlna or iPhone app.
cant access to my go pro video easily like the seagate.

apple should add dlna support and iOS app to make this killer

    Not reliable

    • Written by from Redlands

I had an older version (2012) of the 2TB Air Port Time Capsule (the square flat one) and it just failed without warning after about a year and a half. Took it to the Genius Bar for diagnosing and they asked me "you have this all backed up, right?" ha ha ha, the Time Capsule WAS the back up!!

I could feel the unit was working (could feel heat and hum) but no light on the front. No way to recover data. It just bricked one day. Had to pay to replace the whole thing, no recovery, no apple care, no replacement.

I'd recommend another brand based on their inability to even apologize that all my archived data just disappeared.

    2 TB Review

    • Written by from Denver

I purchased this product based on the reviews and the good luck I have had will all Apple products. But.....

Maybe my unit is defective, but the signal strength is much worse than my 10 yr old Linksys, the back up takes hours (even with less than 1 TB of files) with the computer 5 feet from the TC and it will not stay connected to our iphones, Ipads, iMac or Macbooks. I checked the Support page and connection issues with Mtn Lion are well documented, but no solution from Apple. Most people have just hard wired back to the router which defeats the purpose of this purchase.
I am bummed - this is first sub-par Apple product that I have purchased....
    The search continues...

Not quite as intuitive as it should be

    • Written by from Sunnyvale

Hummm $300 is a lot of money. And the time capsule is not what its all jazzed up to be. I guess if you just want to use is for time machine it is adequate (a $100 external drive should do about the same).

I was really disappointed by the wifi performance. It fared no better than the piece of rubbish the telco sent me to terminate my dsl connection. Throughput and range are just as mediocre.

I thought I d be able to share my files and photos with my family (everyone uses macs). After leeching on posts and forums and the such I could not find any straight forward - easy way to do this. Everything is convoluted and counter intuitive.

I am usually a big fan of Apple hardware, software and products in general. This did not cut the mustard. Apart from the very basic setup steps for wifi and time machine, all the rest is a bear.

What I want is to have my photo's copied on the time machine and kept in sync while sharing the pictures with the family on the internal wlan easily and seamlessly. This is not possible with this product. (it is actually not possible with any solution provided by Apple afaik).

This will teach me to do my research before I buy. Still disappointed however.

I ll encourage you to shop around and do your homework before buying this product, I am sure you can get better features and performance from competing products.
