    Look elsewhere

    • Written by from Denver

I was excited to try this out and for the first 6 months it worked fine. But, the hard drive failed on me two weeks ago (which Apple replaced) but it just hasn’t been the same since. It keeps loosing memory of the printer installed and I have to go through the re-install process every time. Plus, something that has bothered me from the start, you CAN’T partition the drive! So frustrating when you are trying to use Mac and PC on the same disk.

If I were looking I would look at an AirPort Extreme and add your own external hard drive or I would look at a different manufacture. I have not been impressed with the Time Capsule.

    Worked Flawlessly--For a Month

    • Written by from Dothan

We have a household full of laptops, many with digital photos that weren't getting backed up in a timely fashion. We really appreciated the smooth way that Time Machine integrated with this unit. The wifi power was also great. After we had it connected for about a month wifi internet started dropping, wifi network remained in place but no internet (internet still worked on the Ethernet connection), and the disk "could not be found." Tried half a dozen resets and other config changes to no avail--the thing is dead now and I've hooked up my old Cisco router. Hope apple will honor the warranty without a lot of hassle.

    2.4GHz Band simply doesn't work

    • Written by from Saint Louis

I recently replaced an AP Extreme with a 2TB Time Capsule- dual band. Easy set up and I was online in minutes. The only problem is that the only things that can now connect to it are my newer devices i.e.: iPhone 5, 2 MacBookPros, iPad 2. It's supposed to be running dual band to allow for older devices to connect. I can no longer connect my AP Express or my iPhone 4 to my home network. I can't tell if it's a firmware issue, IOS issue or both. 1000's of people are having the same problem. Seems like it would be a simple fix but I have literally tried everything but returning the unit which is next.

If you have a mix of devices I would stick with a regular AP Extreme and use an external hard drive plugged into it for backups.

fine when it works, but unreliable

    • Written by from murrieta

i never know when the time capsule will stop working. i back up when i can, then the thing will die for a few months. i haven't been able to find any way to make it work when it does that. then after a time, it will work perfectly fine again. not terribly useful.

When it works, it's great... it just doesn't work often.

    • Written by from New york

My time capsule recently died after about 4 months - just outside of the phone support window. When I bought it, I decided to ignore the numerous negative reviews about the time capsule and I ordered it for the convenience of automatice data backup. As a router, the time capsule works fine, and for automatic data backup it's extremely convenient. However, it does not always backup as scheduled (may go days without automatically backing up new files), so it is a bit finicky. This lack of predictability, coupled with the fact that it died in just 4 months lead me to say that I would not recommend this product. It's extremely convenient when it works; but, the quality is very poor.

    I don't get it?

    • Written by from Tarawa Terrace

How does your backup drive die before the computer its supposed to back up? Worked great for about 2 years until it stopped working completely, I tried to do a full restore now it doesn't even show up on the computer. Way too expensive to only last this short of time. Not making that mistake again!

    Fool Me Twice

    • Written by from New York

Second time capsule to break down after ~18 months, limited warranty only extends for 1 year. Very frustrating experience. Not doing it again and wouldn't recommend it over cheaper, more reliable alternatives.

Don't combine two devices into one

    • Written by from Augusta

This is a follow-up of a previous review by me. Still not able to sync with MacBook Pro after initially working for a number of months.

    The major flaw is this:
It is not a good idea to combine two devices into one. In this case, the router works, but for some arcane reason, the hard drive does not sync. So, I am stuck with this very hot device, and I expect the heat will cause the router to fail sooner than it would have otherwise. If the router had failed, then I would have had to ship the entire device for repair and lose the use of the router, or buy a separate router.

Better to keep things simple (Apple, remember?):
Keep the two devices separate. Then, if one device fails, it doesn't involve the 2nd device.

    Hot, Hot, Hot!

    • Written by from Laramie

My Time Capsule runs very hot all the time! I purchased it in Sep of 2012. I have it in a very well ventilated area and there is not a lot of dust but it still is hot all the time. I use it to back up four different Mac computers and access movies from my Apple TV so it is used all the time and the fan has come on several times. From what different community forums have said about the TC's thermal management system the fan only comes on when the temperature is close to the "melt-down" point! And from what it looks like with the fan and vent design all that fan does is swirl the heat around. I'm worried the power supply is going to fail soon and my backups will be lost!

    Buggy and limited

    • Written by from Sta Lucija

The idea is nice but the implementation is poor:
    - Every hour my MBP slows down significantly for a while (this is with an SSD drive)
    - Latest firmware v7.6.1 is very buggy, disk disconnects randomly and frequently (net connection is fine) with the only cure being a reboot.
    - You get 2TB of disk space but there's no way to instruct it to leave half of it allocated for your files

Two in one device not a good idea

    • Written by from Augusta

Time capsule stopped backing up both wirelessly and with an Ethernet cable after a few months. Help by Genius bar and Apple Care, and replacement with another Time Capsule, have not solved the problem. So, the problem is specific to my computer. Interestingly, I have 3 other hard drives that work fine by Firewire cable, so there is some arcane issue that is specific to Time Capsule.
I have decided I don’t have time for this and am giving up. The router works fine, but I am stuck with this hard drive that does nothing but consume electricity and generate heat as I cannot access it. It would be better to keep the hard drive and router separate.

    Not worth the premium...

    • Written by from LOS ANGELES

I love Apple products because of the simplicity. I have a network of Apple products, so thought the Time Capsule would be the best way to connect all of them. Unfortunately, there's nothing special about this device to warrant the extra money. Moreover, it has been buggy as heck:

    1) No QOS, meaning you can't prioritize bandwidth to different computers. This is a bummer when you're in the middle of a movie and buffering starts because someone else in the house just started a big download.
    2) You can't control when the backups happen. The Time Capsule wants to back up every hour, and you can't override that to make it back up once a day instead. You have to download 3rd party software which is a bit kludgy.
    3) The wireless interferes with the wireless mouse and keyboard. I have to have the time capsule hardwired to my iMac, because whenever it tried a backup the wireless would overpower the bluetooth on the mouse and keyboard, making typing and scrolling super slow.

Router does not play well with others (Brother)

    • Written by from Berwyn

The Time Capsule works well as a router for my computers and as a backup hard drive for my wife's Macbook. It's pretty simple to set up the router, and nearly idiot proof setting up the TC with Time Machine for backups.

It does NOT work well with my Wifi network ready Brother HL-2170W laser printer. The Brother worked flawlessly with my previous LinkSys router, allowing all local networked computers to print to the Brother wirelessly. Time Capsule adamantly refuses to connect to the Brother, through Wifi or ethernet.

I've looked online for advice and no one has much luck connecting a Brother network printer to a Time Capsule or an Airport from Apple. There's no good solution.

think about what you need first

    • Written by from Lynwood

Time machine is not a place to store the documents that you never want to lose. Its a just a way to keep your computer in the state its in if it ever breaks down on you. The way it works is that it backs up all your documents but once the storage drive starts getting full it will delete some of your first back ups so it could continue backing up your current files (with out telling you). So all the stuff from your first back ups that you deleted (for say) before your second back up will be gone once you back up your files like a year later. Its better to just transfer files to a external hard drive like the old days. this might be good for a desktop with a 2 TB drive but not for a laptop with 500GB of memory. Think about it before you buy it to know what you really need.

    brutally slow

    • Written by from Montreal

I have my Mac Pro connected to the Time Capsule over ethernet and it takes an unbelievably long time to just pull up the restore Time Machine interface for a folder. IT then takes another minute to start to scroll back in time for a folder. This is with a freshly-formatted TC. It's awful and I wish I'd just stuck with a disk-based solution. This is unbearable. The extra star is because it at least works.

    Two Stars for 2 Years!

    • Written by from Aventura

This morning, my Time Capsule (where I keep all of my music files) stopped working. No noise no explosion, no talking message, the TC just stopped. That was after only 2 years. I had 380 GB of commercial music that I produced, wiped out! Wait, it gets worse.....THAT WAS THE SECOND TIME! Almost like clockwork, I had a first generation which crapped out after 26 months, and this morning, a 500GB 3rd generation TC bit the dust; which was replaced under warranty. My mother always told me "First Time, shame on them" , "Second time, shame on ME!". Do I roll the dice with a 100 dollar coupon that Apple was nice enough to email me? Or 2 years from now I write another paragraph about how it failed and I'm a moron? Somebody please give me your opinion? Please?

Power Supply Problem - 2nd Gen

    • Written by from Wyckoff

I wish I would have read these reviews before. I would have backed up my back-up...

I arrived home to discover that my TC had shut down and would not power up. I called Apple and the Tech told me that they could not service it because it was out of waranty. He recommended that I take it to a Third Party Service Provider, who later informed me that the power supply was fried. I am crossing my fingers hoping that I can recover my data (20K photos + music + movies + etc.).

Is this where we are supposed to back-up & store our important data?

    Don't do it

    • Written by from Salt Lake City

It worked fine almost 18 months. Then, it died. I looked to get it repaired (I think it is just a power supply issue), and there is no one that can fix it. The sad part is, I have hundreds of movies and TV shows worth mega bucks from Apple TV and iTunes. Customer support cannot help. "You should have had it backed up" they say. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to keep back-ups syncronized on the 4 Macs, 2 iPads, and 1 Apple TV.

One of the weakest apple products

    • Written by from Bethel

I thought it would be a good idea to have time capsule to back up my MacPro and my MacBook to the same drive. I connected my MacPro by ethernet cable and my MacBook through wifii. My MacBook was fine but my MacPro would freeze up had problems shutting down and would run a full back up over and over. Also it took sometimes up to 20 minutes to connect to time machine with the time capsule. Finally I decided to get a regular external hard drive for the MacPro , connected via USB and its working very good without any issues.

Don't waste your money get an airport extreme and an external hard drive, its cheaper and works better.

Does not work as a wireless client

    • Written by from Holland Park

If you use a Time Capsule as a wireless base station, it works fine. But, if you want it to join an existing network, you'll be out of luck. You can join an existing network, but you'll get shocking performance: 2MB/sec absolute maximum, and < 1MB/sec most of the time.

Spent an hour with Apple support, and they told me that "a Time Capsule is not meant to be used as a wireless client". (Never mind that you can explicitly configure it that way.)

For me, that's a show stopper because I wanted to physically separate my backup drive from my Mac Pro; I cannot use the Time Capsule as a base station because the cable modem access point is right where the computer is.

The recent 7.6 firmware upgrade did not fix this. I'm very disappointed with the the entire thing. The one reason I bought the Time Capsule was to have a physically separate backup drive, but it cannot be used that way.
