    AirPort Extreme

    I happen to use Windows and Mac products. As such I never considered Apple for a wireless base station. However, after a string of sub standard offerings from Linksys and D-Link left me with frequent drops and reboots, I thought I would give the Extreme a go. Well once I installed it I never looked back. I have 4 people in my household who all have multiple gadgets. While I do notice when someone is gaming, drops are a thing of the past. I only wish I had tried this earlier. I would have saved myself a great deal of frustration.

    Serious Hard Connectivity/Mounting Problems

    Bought Airport Extreme to be able to share my 1tb G-Drive. Everything worked great for a couple of weeks and then my G-Drive started working intermittently. When it does allow me to access the drive it often causes Finder to crash. Most often I just get the G-Drive icon in Finder and no access to the files. Video streaming from it causes DVD player or Quicktime to crash often with loss of access to drive. Very frustrated with this product as the hard drive connectivity is why I bought it. I even bought the G-Drive recommended as a great match. While researching these problems I have found that this is a known problem with hundreds of other users with the same problem and no solutions. G-Drive works fine when it is directly connected to my MacBook Pro. Do not buy this product if you want to use an external hard drive with it. Endless headaches and lost productivity.

    I just got one on Amazon yesterday and it's awesome. It set up very easily and I had all (including iPhones and my Mom's Tablet) 7 devices set up in about 5 minutes. The guest network is even easier to set up.

    Awesome piece of equipment. I had an old (more than 10 years) ethernet router connecting 2 iMacs but it had no WIFI. I played with several scenarios, but in the end I got the Extreme to replace everything rather than just adding a wireless access point. I was very concerned about setup, but it actually took me less time to set up than it did to unbox it! Superb quality as usual from Apple - even the wire connecting the unit to power is top quality. Range is perfect even in my 4-level back-split. And, it looks great. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

    Best router ever!

    I LOVE this router. Have had it for two years now and have never had an issue. I cannot say enough good things about it. I got tired of having to replace my router every year so decided to invest in an AirPort, am so glad I did. Like everything else Apple, it is so low-maintenance and just figures everything out itself. No complicated installation, it literally worked itself out. Another great feature is how quickly it alerts you if you go offline. Every router I've had in the past has made it difficult to determine whether the router or the modem is the issue, the AirPort just pops right up and tells you. This product is worth every dime, you will not regret it!

    A wireless wonder

    Beginning with its simple design to its outstanding, sustained performance, this apple product outperforms, outlasts and outshines its rivals. What we are getting is an enterprise level of performance product at a consumer price with an intuitive, simple setup.

    I've enjoyed Airport Extreme Base Station since 2008. I have a home office with one Windows PC running flawlessly (wired), a Mac G4, running on 11b that shares my iTunes Library with all machines flawlessly. My station produces surprisingly fast loads and downloads on my 6 mg/sec DSL connection. I have also two Laptops running wirelessly with the best performance and no lags on internet nor WLAN. On the same network, I have 4 printers and 2 shared drives...all attached through network wire or USB or Wireless...one way or another to this station; no issues in years. On top of that, all machines work most of the day, constantly synching with a cloud service and browsing three different database on Safari, Firefox and Windows IE . PROS: All I can think of. CONS: NONE I CAN THINK OF.

    I love its automatic update firmware/software feature. There should be a sixth star rating for this base station. It

    Can't wake up USB drive after power save

    • Written by from San Jose

    50 of 62 people found this useful

    The only reason I bought this router is to have the ability to share disk and printer.
    The external disk drive won't wake up properly from my MacBook Pro (retina) sleep mode.
    The only way to get the drive back is to power cycle the external drive.
    Worst than the external drive not being available, the whole OS stops to function properly.
    The finder doesn't respond, I guess it was looking for the external drive.
    The airport utility can't read the router setting since it can't read the external drive status.
    I know the external drive is the culprit because the moment I power down the USB drive, all the blocking tasks came back and function properly again. The finder is no longer "not responding". The airport utility can read router settings.

    This issue seems to be well known and I should've search the web prior to the purchase. Then again, how am I to know what "issues" to search for before I experience this bug?

    WiFi wise, there's nothing spectacular about it. Just like any other AP. But over priced.
    Apple has gone down the "arrogance' path now. Won't fix real world bugs due to some theoretical principle.
    Just like the OS X upgrade (Lion and beyond) where key repeat functionality is taken away because they want to "unify" with iOS. If so, why not display a virtual keyboard when the cursor is in input box?

    Fix bugs!!!!!
    The same external drive operates properly when connecting directly to the laptop, but becomes un-reachable overtime when connecting to AE.t

    Concrete Walls? No Problem.

    I was very worried about how a wireless router would work in my 1700 square foot apartment that has thick concrete walls as structural supports. I first bought the latest AirPort Express which I found worked but not very well. I also realized I needed more Ethernet ports to provide a wired signal to some of the boxes I have around my TV (receiver and Xbox specifically) because those devices are incredibly frustrating to have if you have anything less than a flawless signal.

    The moment I exchanged for the AirPort Extreme my entire apartment was working great. Everything was running at a fast rate and it was able to support multiple laptops and even multiple Xboxs (one wired and one wireless). Awesome, awesome router.

    I really liked my Airport Extreme, but the radio part died a month or two after the 1-year warranty expired. I recommend this product, BUT GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY!

    $180 a year is too much to pay.

    Best wireless router

    I had been having a ton of issues with the various wireless routers I have used over the years, whether it was belkin, lynksys, d-link, whatever. Most of them I could never even get a good solid snap in of the cable from the cable modem so if they got moved at all, they would lose connection. I knew I was going to love the AirPort Extreme when I got that satisfying "CLICK" of the ethernet cable seating perfectly into the WAN port. Then I turned it on and when I did, it was like magic. I set it up from the AirPort utility on my windows 7 laptop and then I ran around and set the rest of my windows machines, my tivo, both xbox 360s, my playstation, my Sony dvd blu-ray player (using and external wireless hub through wired connection), my wirless HP Printer, and my Iphone 4 with unbelievable simplicity. I can not get over how easy this was to install and to get working on all of my devices. And to top it all off, my sygnal strength went from a waivering 2 to 3 bars at the farest reaches to full strength throughout the house. My son's computer, which has had repeated issues with bad connectivity and lag, is now lag-free. This device works great whether on an Apple device or any other wireless-N device. I absolutely love it. Thanks apple for a great, high quality product.

    Don't let the bad comments fool you. This is an amazing product. I was skeptical if the airport extreme would be better than my linksys router overall. MY GOD. I'll confess that the range is essentially the same but the internet speed.......

    Research = Best Option
    Features = Best Option
    Power = Best Option
    Dual Band = So much faster being able to support 802.11n separately
    Apple TV = Makes it such much better to stream
    iPhone - iPhone to Apple TV streaming is perfect and without flaw

    This is the router you want. My last one lasted 7 years and the only reason I replaced it was to get this faster one. The 7 year old one still works and I will keep it for a back up! Thanks Apple! Another GREAT PRODUCT that kicks everything else out of the water!

    Great For Crowded Wireless Areas

    • Written by from Washington

    I recently moved from a small condo building in downtown Washington, DC to a much-larger apartment building complex with hundreds of apartments. As a result, my Belkin Wireless router just didn't cut it anymore.

    There were so many interfering signals that it simply lost its connection all the time. It would drop at least four or five times per hour which made playing video games online or streaming Netflix really frustrating.

    My girlfriend had a much better router but even that didn't manage to emit a strong-enough signal throughout my apartment to overwhelm interference from other neighboring routers.

    So I ponied up and got the AirPort Extreme and I am so glad I did.

    The AirPort Extreme has amazing signal strength - it also transmits on a couple of wireless channels and frequencies, reducing interference and improving strength of signal.

    Even more amazingly, the AirPort Extreme increased my wireless speeds 10x. I was paying for 20 Mbps internet but regularly SpeedTests were showing 2-3 Mbps. After upgrading to the AirPort Extreme my wireless speeds are now regularly 20 Mbps.

    Well worth the extra cost if you live in the city or somewhere else with extremely crowded airwaves!

    I am the most computer illiterate baboon on earth and I had this thing set up running two iPad 2s, 2 iPhone 4 s, an HP Envey with air print, a Mac, 2 apple tvs and one of those is first gen, 2 playstation 3s, a cable modem, and 3 hard drives in less than 30 min without any help. I am so amazed and proud of myself. This is the best product I have ever bought from apple. For a reference I had geek squad out five times to set up a less complicated network with a linksis router two years ago and it never worked. This thing is totally worth the money.

    Had to Go Through A Lot of Routers to Find This

    I have been through several routers (Belkin, Cisco/Linksys, DLink) and this by far, was the best choice for me. I was put off by the price, but bit the bullet last week and got it.

    I have my iMac, iPhone, Ipad, Apple TV and a HP4650 Color Laserjet printer connected to this Airport Extreme and everything works in perfect harmony.

    Not nearly enough features for the price

    • Written by from Rusagonis

    Although the airport extreme base station is simple to setup, it has some daunting draw backs. One crucial feature that is not offered in this firmware has been requested several times by many users and that is QoS. When using an apple router you will quickly realize that performing any task on a network that has three or more computers running on it is makes it nearly impossible to perform any task.

    The idea is great, and this has potential to be a great product, however whom ever is programming the firmware for apple's networking products is severely limiting the potential of this product. Without these features, the price hardly makes this product worth while. I would suggest any other routing option, as its likely to save you more than half the cost of this product.
