    Don't buy!

A couple of months ago, my original AirPort Extreme died after five faithful years of service. I bought it when I purchased one of the first MacBook Pros, which unfortunately shipped with a "g" WiFi chip on the logic board. Because I had never had a problem with my original AirPort Extreme, I bought a new replacement: What a mistake! Although Apple claims that the AirPort extreme supports the "g" chip, I've had nothing but problems trying to maintain an Internet and mail connection. In fact, I have to re-boot the unit at least once a week! In addition, the newer AirPort Extreme forces the user to set-up a "guest account." There is no way to disconnect it. Apple would do well to try to improve the quality of its existing technologies, rather than shoving the so-called "newest and greatest" stuff down the throats of its faithful. My MacBook Pro is soon headed for the trash can because Apple is following the Microsoft-Intel strategy of making its computers obsolete by requiring greater chip and equipment requirements to run its software. Apple appears to be leaving its once faithful customers behind: A strategy that will eventually come back to haunt them.

After I bought the AirPort Extreme it just took a few minutes to set up, which was immensely intuitive and painless. Now I get very fast HD streaming and excellent range. Great product worth the money.

    Generation 5

I recently upgraded from a gen 4 to a gen 5. I've had it for about eight weeks. I made the decision to upgrade solely based on the positive reviews found here. Several claimed that their range and strength doubled. Sadly, that was not my experience. I would say it is 10% better at best and I have to reboot it periodically to keep range & signal at the optimum level. My service is through AT&T U-verse. I'm using the 2Wire router to feed my Airport Extreme. It is in the basement office. My main disappointment is when I use the WiFi to stream music via Air Play throughout the house. The music will drop out intermittently when I'm in the kitchen. This is where the main stereo is. It has a Airport Express connected to it. I've attempted to convert the Express to an extender, but it didn't work. My advice is to save your $180 and wait until a later generation really improves the signal & range.

Amazing startup - excellent speed and compatibility

I hooked up our new AEBS today, replacing a 5 year old WR54TG WiFi router that dropped out aperiodically and often with our new Macbook Pros. Our system has the MBPs, iPhone, iPad, wireless Epson printer and a 7 year old Samsung HDTV connecting WiFi through a Sony Blu-Ray DVD player with a USB wireless stick. The router connects to a Comcast cable modem (cable/internet/voice). Completely powered down the Comcast modem (and removed the battery) for a few minutes. Ran the AirPort Utility to set up the network which simply asked for a new password. Turned on the Comcast cable modem and it worked perfectly. Set each device to the new password and everything works fine. Total time to do this was a couple of minutes. This thing is blazing fast - I have never seen download speeds pushing 25 Mbps but that's what's happening here. Nice product!

Got it today Can't be happier. The installation was a bit long but I ended up finding that i needed to restart my modem. Amazing speed, I currently have connected 2 iphones, 2 laptops, smart Tv and no problem at all. One great thing was that i connect my printer to the network. I also created a guest network for friends. Great ways to set it up with airport utility. Amazing product. The router look beautiful by the way.

My airport extreme works great with our three IMAXs and two iPads, but we also have an older titanium PowerBook that has no problem getting online at any WiFi cafe or hotel, BUT will not connect connect with our AirPort network. What gives?

    Best wireless router

I had been having a ton of issues with the various wireless routers I have used over the years, whether it was belkin, lynksys, d-link, whatever. Most of them I could never even get a good solid snap in of the cable from the cable modem so if they got moved at all, they would lose connection. I knew I was going to love the AirPort Extreme when I got that satisfying "CLICK" of the ethernet cable seating perfectly into the WAN port. Then I turned it on and when I did, it was like magic. I set it up from the AirPort utility on my windows 7 laptop and then I ran around and set the rest of my windows machines, my tivo, both xbox 360s, my playstation, my Sony dvd blu-ray player (using and external wireless hub through wired connection), my wirless HP Printer, and my Iphone 4 with unbelievable simplicity. I can not get over how easy this was to install and to get working on all of my devices. And to top it all off, my sygnal strength went from a waivering 2 to 3 bars at the farest reaches to full strength throughout the house. My son's computer, which has had repeated issues with bad connectivity and lag, is now lag-free. This device works great whether on an Apple device or any other wireless-N device. I absolutely love it. Thanks apple for a great, high quality product.

    Elegantly Brilliant!

After two years of constant problems with D-Link's DIR-825 (a story that culminated with the D-Link refusing to play nice with Shaw's upgraded Docsis 3 broadband modem), I finally made the decision to upgrade to the Airport Extreme.

Since I had so many issues with dropouts, disconnects, re-sets, and poor performance over the years with the DIR-825, I was pretty cautious about putting out so much money for a new router. But I did my homework, taking my time to research a variety of different high end routers and found that the Airport Extreme consistently rated high with users. So I decided to take the plunge!

And I have to say that I am not disappointed! The Airport Extreme is, like all Apple products, elegantly brilliant in it's design, simplicity and performance. It's design is sophisticated, it is dead simple to set up and it outperforms any router I've ever used or worked on (I used to work as a technology consultant so I've had the chance to play around with a lot of them) in the past.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants a simple, elegant, fast and stable router.

Solved all of my WiFI issues!

This is my fourth router in the past 6 months. We have Time Warner internet (the Broadband Turbo version). I will be upgrading that as soon as something better is available but for now it is what we have. It is not uncommon for us to have 4 computers online and at least one TV streaming Netflix. Also two wireless HP printers. Often this resulted in very poor connection quality and slow speeds. I started out with a cheaper Airlink router that worked OK but would not connect to some of our devices (X-Box and Sony Blu-Ray player). Replaced that with a dual band Belkin. This connected to all our devices but was constantly dropping connections and would have to be reset daily. The devices that are used for Netflix like the TVs and Blu-Ray players were connected to the 5mhz band. Then I got a D-Link dual band. Better connection quality and fewer usage issues but like the Belkin it had to be reset daily and sometimes multiple times in a day. Finally got the Airport Extreme a couple of weeks ago and all of my issues went away. Connected a 1TB hard drive plugged into the Airport for some network storage. This has all worked flawlessly to this point. The only real issue has been an old Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista that will not connect to the secure network. It will only connect to the guest (unsecured) network. Other wise this thing has been a like a little electronic miracle. Internet is working like it should.

I toyed with other brand however they never lived up to expectations. I should have guessed that the best router in Mac ecosystem was an Airport. No rebooting, no glitches and no bugs. Fast consistent internet throughout my whole property!

i a extreme 5th gen and it was easy to setup easy to connect. its a great product. it is only slightly faster than my old g router at loading webpages but much faster streaming video from youtube and from iTunes to iPad. my old router crashed a few times a week and needed to be unplugged. a week after getting my airport i tried loading a website but nothing happened, i was disappointed and thought it was going to be like my old dlink but i waited a few minutes and it came back. it has never crashed since and never needed any maintenance other than the occasional update. the range on it is good. it it in the basement and covers the 3 floors of my house and detached garage. also shares my hp printer flawlessly.

Perfect for the home environment, and when combined with the Airport Express I have sound in every room as well as wireless extended out to the patio.

In response to JD from Santa Barbara: So, do we give you one star because you acted on an assumption and failed to read the Overview of the Extreme, or even look at an image, before you purchased it? Take a big, personal step and assume responsibility, rather than shuffling blame off on the "Monopoly".

All I wanted to do was use AirPlay on my HK Soundsticks III Via airport express. Figure extreme would be able to take care of this plus more. WRONG. No audio jack on extreme. Seems so simple to put an audio jack on the upgraded extreme, but nope. Apple got me again. I will now be buying an airport express now. Thanks apple, you put the M.O. In monopoly.

My Linksys "G" router was over 7 years old and with so many wireless devices in our home, it was time for an upgrade to a "N" router. I researched for weeks and decided on the AirPort Extreme over the Linksys. Even though it only has 3 Ethernet ports, I am only using 1 due to the additional wireless speed.

The setup using my Mac Mini was almost effortless and only took about 5 minutes. With my previous LInksys "G" router, my wireless printer wasn't available on the home network, unless I hard wired it to the router. Now it works like it was designed to work for all of my devices, including iPhones, iPad, Mac Mini, Windows Vista and Windows XP.

The only issue that I experienced, that wasn't related to the AirPort Extreme, was that one of our Compaq Windows Vista laptops couldn't connect to the Internet. The message that kept displaying was "Local Only". The issue was related to the wireless card driver. HP released the driver update on their website, but Microsoft hadn't, so everytime I tried to look for the latest drivers, Microsoft said that I had the latest ones. After I updated the wireless card drivers with the latest version, everthing has been working fine.

It's a wireless router, what can you say? If it works, and it's seemless giving you no problems, then to me that's 5 stars. Here's why I give it 4 stars: No Web Interface. After working for years with other brand routers, I was shocked this had no interface. Lucky I actually have a Mac with the configuration utility installed, and the helpful rep at the Apple store pointed it out to me before I left the store. Why is that a big deal? I have a mixed environment, mostly Virtual Windows PCs or Virual Linux that I tunnel in and access remotely. My Mac is just the iTunes / iPhone / iPad environment, and isn't up all the time. : No QoS? No sure, maybe this product has an internal network shaping priority packets assigner, but it's not obvious, it looks like all the traffic has the same priority. Fortunately for me, my VoIP is directly on the Cablemodem, so I can't even say if a lack of QoS has an effect. : Expensive, at $179.99, the price is about $80 more than I would expect. But for that money has a really cool feature - I have a large house, and I'm able to configure a second base station to seemlessly provide more coverage. Throughput is great since I have them connected to eachother with Gigabit cables. The "old cheap way" was to use two separate wireless SSIDs, now with this Apple Extreme, the second unit seemlessly extends coverage without looking like you have two networks. : I wish the status was a little more helpful, but then again one glowing green light or blinking amber is a lot better than an array of flashing LEDs 24/7. : Reserving IP Addresses - here's where Apple's simplicity doesn't work. I had to actually use pen & paper to write down the Mac addresses before re-typing them in to reserve. Hello, the Airport, it's 2012. D-Link allows you already know the mac addresses of devices connected to it, the interface ought to have a right click, reserve it's IP, boom it's done, but know, I had to write down the hex addresses to re-type them in.

This router definitely has improved my range and has improved my speed. I don't have the FASTEST internet speed, but downloading at .4 or .6 Mbs was killing me. Now I get around 1 Mbs a lot of the time. That might be slow for many people, but when your coming form .5-ish it makes a big difference.

I works well with my iPhone, MacBook Pro, and Windows Vista desktop.
