    MUST BUY

    • Written by from Pueblo

This is the best Apple product that I have invested in. Its completely worth 1000! The display, size, resolution and quality is just amazing and to die for! If you want a desktop display for your laptop this is it. Apple did an amazing job making this aluminum body display screen!

Dont Bother, only gave it one star because i couldn't select 0 stars

This is a great monitor, potentially, but has turned into the most expensive dust gathering object yet for Mac os X, as Apple seem to be able to miss, by a country mile, the point of a second monitor on one of its products. As for the most part it is useless under Mac os X with the new style full screen apps that, when in full screen mode, blank out the second screen, rendering it useless for additional apps you might want open at the same time. Think i will go back to windows.

Useless w/o Thunderbolt computer or laptop...

    • Written by from Buffalo

Customers with Macs that only support Mini DisplayPort output, such as the Mac Pro and MacBook, as well as previous generations of MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and iMac can not use this as their display. I currently own an older MacBook Pro and would love to buy this display to use now, but in ANTICIPATION of eventually getting a Thunderbolt-capable laptop or Mac. I can't do that. Does Apple want me to buy the Cinema display now and the Thunderbolt display next year? Not happening.

    Crystal clear

Works perfectly. Only gripe is I kind of wish it had an audio output. I assumed it did but I was wrong. After I get used to this may pick up another for dual TB displays. Still on the fence about if I need another one though.

Would I buy again.. you betcha.

I've had my display soon for a week, and I am quite content with it. It is quality all through. There is however one problem. My display won't wake up with my MBP. The display stays in sleep mode.

I was in contact with apple support regarding this and got the answer that it is a known bug. The work-around is that i have to pull out the thunderbolt cord from the MBP and put it in again. Then the screen wakes up again. That is HIGHLY annoying. Until apple fixes that issue I will have to keep on doing that.

    So many problems.

    • Written by from Montreal

I should've read the other reviews before purchasing a brand new MacBook Pro and Thunderbolt display. Plagued with problems.

    1) Display flickers (apparently a common trait)
    2) Unplugging MBP from Thunderbolt display causes MBP to shut down.
    3) Plugging an awake or sleeping MBP into Thunderbolt display is a mess with the display needing multiple plug/unplugs to even turn on. USB, Firewire ports don't work. MBP needs hard reboot.

The above description is not a rare occurrence but almost every time.

    . . .

When it's all working it can be very nice but this level of disfunction is not what I expected for $3500 worth of brand new equipment. I am bitterly dissappointed.

    Great Display

    • Written by from San Diego

I am now on my third month with my display. I use it as my hub. I use it with my new MacBook Pro with the retina display. It's great!! I have a keyboard, 2 mice (mouse?), what ever, a super drive, and another powered USB hub. I will be getting a Thunderbolt external drive (DROBO) and for now that's about it. I connect and un connect my MacBook Pro several times a day. I do not have any problems with the display and everything connected works great. I can't wait for a retina 27" Thunderbolt display. That way I can give this one to my wife and get the new display for me, haha, like that will happen. Anyway I love this display and I think Apple did a great job!!

    Standby Issues and Fatal Crash

    • Written by from Jersey city

After about a month the display crashed and would not wake from standby or turn on after a reboot. Prior to the crash, I experienced USB and network issues similar to those mentioned in a previous post and wonder whether I got a lemon or there is a more serious problem with the display. An Apple Genius could not get the monitor to reboot and suggested that it might be a faulty logic board or power supply issue. I purchased a new display along with an extended warranty from the Apple store and returned the broken one to Amazon, which said the display was back ordered for another 6 weeks. Its a nice display but it shouldn't crash after a month.

    Standby Issues

    • Written by from Snohomish

I'm having similar issues as other users have reported. I bought this display and a new macbook pro retina. Everything was working fine for a couple of weeks and then I started having issues with the USB ports and network not working after coming out of standby.

I also think there should have been a audio line out on this display. I am very disappointed with this monitor.

    Bad buy.

    • Written by from Sausalito

Amazing how crisp it is and enjoy the thunderbolt options. Great to watch a movie on I bet. HOWEVER, as an Art Director/Designer this was probably the worst display I've ever worked on. It's like looking at a mirror, reflects EVERYTHING and then some. Bad eye strain after one week so I bought a screen defuser - so basically defeats the point of spending $$$ for a sharp display.

    Dead after one week

    • Written by from Atlanta

I'm really unhappy with this purchase. My monitor died this morning after only one week. It's now at the Apple Store being repaired. Not really the way you want a $1000 monitor purchase to go. Very unsatisfied customer.

    An outstanding product

The nicest thing about this display is that it just works. It docks with my mbp flawlessly. The design is just nice + again it works. It's not cheap but the same thing goes to the other monitors with similar specs.

    • Written by from West Hollywood

The display is amazing! Graphics are unbelievable crisp, the colors are awesome!

The glare issue is pretty bad... you really need to be strategic where you place it to avoid reflection... also it can be pretty intense sitting too close to it all day... need a good 2' deep desk to really be at a comfortable distance.

I currently own a Macbook Air 11" and it's great to know that with one simple cable I can make it my office computer with a large screen for multiple windows. I like all apple products but for me this is a must have accessory.

    only two minor problems

    • Written by from Seneca

The Thunderbolt display mostly works great, and is a really excellent monitor. I have experienced none of the sleep/wakeup problems that others have noted. Two minor problems depending on environment: 1) The reflectivity of the screen is essentially the same as that of an iPad, so if there is a light source behind the user it may not be possible to adjust the screen to eliminate annoying glare from reflection; 2) Despite the instructions to adjust the screen height correctly, there is no height adjustment on the display. The only way to adjust the relative heights of screen and user is to adjust the height of the desk surface or the height of the user, neither of which may be possible/reasonable. Neck strain from looking up at the display can result.

    Laptop into Desktop

    • Written by from Star

As a working photographer I want portability and a large screen. The marriage of my MBP to a Thunderbolt display has been perfect. I take the laptop on the road, do my stuff, then come home plug it in and it's like having a 27 iMac to sort and edit.

The key to making it work is getting a wireless keyboard and mouse. This allows for the laptop to remain shut while still running, thus dock, desktop, and full screen apps work on nice, high res display.

Bonus -I keep my iPhone dock plugged in to the Thunder and it charges even when the laptop is not plugged in. I also use a Firewire external drive and that works great too.

Love the display, but issues with USB and ethernet

    • Written by from Hampton

Great display, love it. The reason I decided on this display was the ease of connecting all my devices at my desk to the back. I.e. like a docking station concept. However....
When the display goes to sleep (while I sleep), I loose USB and ethernet when it wakes up. There are many users with this problem, so some patience might be required if you plan to use the ports on the back! I am going to call Apple Support, etc...

So, 5 starts for style and quality of the display, and 1 start for stability of the connected devices. I'll rate this in the middle.

I am very pleased with my purchase of the Apple Thunderbolt Display.
I'm a very big fan of its 27-inch size and really like the docking possibilities.
The extra ethernet port, usb ports, firewire port and thunderbolt port are very useful and I use them al the time.
