Poor quality, remarkably flimsy for its price

    • Written by from Brampton

I have had my charger for about 2 years now and it is taped in so many different areas that I am convinced it is more tape than actual charger. I find that the outer coating is very poor quality and tends to bend and break very easily. The position in which I keep my laptop on the desk requires that my charger is slightly bend right at the end which connects to my MacBook Air, within 3 months of keeping it in that position, the outer coating broke and required taping. I find that the price is very high for a product of such inferior quality and I would expect that Apple puts as much thought into the design, life, and durability of its chargers as it does for it's laptops.
I would highly recommend that the company consider redesigning the charger and think about the long-term life of this product.

    APPLE PLEASE FIX YOUR CABLES!!!

    • Written by from West Jordan

After reading the bad reviews of this cable I did everything I could to be careful with the one that came with my 2011 MacBook Air. My efforts made little difference. After about 6 months the rubber sheathing on the small cable at the spot where cable attaches to the magnetic end started to wear out and come apart. I wrapped the damaged stop with a material in an effort to extend the life of the cable but after about a year the cable stopped working. The cable sheathing material simply can not tolerate the wear at the endpoints. I've had this same problem with many iPhone and iPod usb cables.

I recommend this minor and likely low cost change in the cable design to mitigate the problem....

Extend the thicker sheathing at the cable endpoints an inch or two. This would keep the smaller cable from bending at such a sever angle at the end points and would keep it from wearing out as quickly.

For the money you charge us for these cables and the lack of alternatives, you have an obligation to make a better product. Please fix the problem and rest my concerns that this is and intentional flaw designed to gouge us even deeper.

    Breaks easy, too expensive

    • Written by from Huntington Beach

I've had my MacBook Air with charger for a year and a half now. One day the wires just broke in half at the base. I took it to the apple store to replace it and they told me it would be $80 for a new one.... Why would I want to pay $80 for a new one that's just going to break again out of no where? I'm probably going to buy one on amazon or something for half the price.

Pricey, cheaply made, but have to have it

    • Written by from BATON ROUGE

Yes, we go through these chargers quite often. Still waiting on a "refund" of some made back several years ago. I think maybe the overcharge is for the ridiculous wasteful fancy bag it comes in. Come on Apple! Make these product's prices comparable to their quality. Jeeze!

    Suddenly stopped working!

I am currently using my gf's MBP adapter to charge my MBA. I bought this MBA in Aug 2011 and had no issues until May 2013. After 21 months of working fine, I tried charging it yesterday and the LED didn't turn on. What I don't understand is it was charging fine a week ago and I didn't charge my MBA for the past week and now it doesn't charge.

After reading all these reviews, I am not really impressed about the quality of the charger. Even though mine lasted almost 2 years, this shouldn't be a competition for who's magsafe charger lasts the longest if eventually they all somehow stop working. I will take it to the Apple store and see if I can get it replaced as I am not looking forward to spending $79+ tax on a charger, especially when mine is in excellent condition still.

Apple, just acknowledge after all these reviews for the MBA/MBP chargers that something needs to be done. A recall, a better quality product, a replacement free of charge, something...just do something instead of nothing!

I'm using my second one right now and today I found it doesnt work no matter how I adjust it. I'm seriously angry about it actually. I bought this Air in my freshman year and now, I'm not even a junior yet. Tho I will still purchase the third one.

After about a year of having a charger i found that the wire started to come loose by the adapter! It finally broke nearly setting on fire. I bought a new one and now the one i bought about 3 months ago is breaking. I am very disappointed. This product needs fixing and re-called.

I can see that my adaptor cable is starting to fail as the light is now on intermittently when the cable is connected. It wouldn't be so bad if the cable was $25 but it is unacceptable at the asking price.

This will affect my decision to buy any Apple products in the future as the design for this core piece seems to be planned obsolescence.

I can't believe the number of people with online complaints about this adaptor. This is happening to mine as well, and I hope I am still under warranty, but do i really have to buy the same product again?!

This is the second time I have to buy a replacement charger cable for my laptop that it's not even 3 years old. I am very careful with my equipment so it is definitely not negligence on my end. It is just poor construction. Of course the people at the Apple store said it wasn't cover under warranty so I have to spend another $79.99. I love Apple products, but this is ridiculous!!!

My charger lasted a year and a half before the wire BROKE OFF. I am not at all rough with my charger, so there is absolutely no reason, aside from poor quality, that this should have happened.

I am a Tech specialist for a small school district. We issued Macbook Airs to students in August of 2012. As of April, 2013, I have approximately 45-50 that have failed. This represents better than a 20 percent failure rate. The cables on the adapters fail, usually the failure is internal and not detectable with the eyes. Apple includes winding hooks with the adapter that seem to exaggerate the problem, the tight wind encouraged by these hooks causes a sharp bend at the base of the cable. For the price of the Macbooks, and the price of the replacement adapters, I would certainly expect better.

I am now on my second charger which has broken, and I'm having to purchase another expensive charger which I can barely afford. Apple really needs to sort of the design of this charger since I'm not satisfied at all and I'm completely appalled with the service provide even though I've spent a lot of money getting a mac and I shouldn't be dealing with a fault like this.

I just ordered my third charger. I thought maybe I was too rough with the first one and took the blame for its failure; however, although I was super careful with the second one, it has stopping working as well. PLEASE Apple, re-design this item. I love Apple and other issues that the MacBook Air have had over the years have been improved. PLEASE?????

    MacBook Air Power Adaptor

I guess I am not alone. My adaptor started charging intermittently—then stopped all together. It is a year and a half old and has been taken care of. I’ll pay to get a new one but will most likely move from Mac to a cheaper notebook platform when it is time to upgrade. It seems that Apple has the exact same issues as other vendors but charges far more for aftermarket/replacement items. It is a shame too, I like the notebooks and OS – but I like Linux too, and it can run on cheaper hardware.

I love the design of this charger but it would be much better if it was reliable - and last longer - and the price reasonable...
