    Apple Power Cords Need Redesigned

    • Written by from Marion

Apple has great products, but when it comes to their power cords (MacBook, iPad, iPhone, iPod, etc), they fall horribly short of the standard they have set with their consumers. I got my MacBook Pro in 2011 and have already replaced the power adapter once and am now replacing it a second time. I should have replaced my current cord ages ago, but I couldn't afford to shovel out another $79 for a cord, so I just dealt with the shorting and the cracked casing around the cable. I am a huge Apple fan, but I have been disappointed by all of the charge cables I've ever had from Apple (I've owned a good number of Apple devices over the years).

    Dear Apple,

    PLEASE FIX YOUR CABLES!

    Dead after 11 months use.

    • Written by from Caringbah

This one didn't even last a year. Hole burned through small cable near block.

3rd in 4 years. Planned to tape this one as soon as I noticed any wear. Never got the chance. Always coiled very loosely and still died.

    Going to spend more money

    • Written by from Torino

Unfortunately I will have to spend again money on this.... My first one had the peeling cables problem everyone else is reporting here - a shame considering the price and Apple care for design and engineering. The second one just blew with sparks a couple of days ago. Obviously it's designed not to be open, so I can't even try to have a look inside to check its status....So, more money for something I already know it won't last

Started fraying in the MIDDLE of the cord!

    • Written by from Presint 14

18 months. Of course it started fraying less than a year after purchase, but the tape have been holding up well in the last few months. But even that won't last, I know, because BEHOLD, other parts of the cord started fraying. Sooner or later the whole charger might just consist of tape, and knowing the danger, I know I have to spend that 90 dollars soon, which is a lot for a college student. That would last me about 10 days in food. But hey, a lot of essays to finish on my MBP. Thanks to my charger, I'll have to survive on one meal of noodles per day for a week and a half. Good reason to lose weight at least.

After I'm done with my MBP, I might just switch to PC because as bulky as their chargers can be, at least they outlast the computer.

Having a Power Adapter that magnetically clicks on and works every time no matter which direction it clicks on is genius! As far as anyone who complains about the cord fraying at either end, I've had my same power cord since early 2011...not a single problem. Its a power cord, not a tug of war rope.... If your damaging your cord over and over again its probably because of some poor technic of coiling it up for travel or your dragging the power adapter around by the laptop with it plugged in.

Getting ready to purchase my 3rd charger

    • Written by from Phoenix

The original charger was great, no frays or anything — until my stupid cat decided to chew on it. That was charger one, I'd give the original one 4 stars. The second charger started peeling where the rubber sheathing meets the charging plug within the first five months of use. No cats were involved, and I don't typically pack my charger to go, so it's not a case of abuse or mishandling. Shame on me for not taking it back since I still had AppleCare when the second one started breaking. Once the rubber sheathing started to go, as did all the insulating wires start to fray — it's only a matter of time before the entire cord separates from the charging head. This is a poor design, with inadequate reinforcement around the charging plug. I've had the exact same failure on three of the current style iPhone cords — ones that I paid $20 each for when I bought my phone two years ago. The rubber material is bad, and degrades too quickly over time. It becomes stretched out from the mere act of touching it, which is why it starts to pull away from the insulation and break away from the cord. I've wasted almost $150 in cords because of this materials flaw.

    Worst part about apple

The worst part about apple is the terrible chargers that fray so easily. Figure it out.

    I hate this charger. I wish I didn't have to select a star, I'd give it 0.

    • Written by from Newark

This charger is the worst thing ever. Of course, when it breaks every other month, I have to sell my soul for a new one. Apple really needs to get this fixed. If you're so big on customer service, serve us properly and stop serving us this cord. If you have Apple care, I suggest you get a new cord the day before it ends, because your cord is sure to stop working soon after, if it hasn't already.

need a better charging cord asap!

    • Written by from Raleigh

it is amazing that apple can come out with some of the best products but can't get a charging cord right. I am not happy purchasing an $80 cord to replace something that should have been engineered better. Mine like everybody else cord is broken at the base. I would agree with some of the other reviews that that part should disconnect this way that part of the cord isn't constantly being stressed by wrapping the cord up. Apple please get this right.

Cord frayed, block gets dangerously hot, plug sparks when plugged in.

    • Written by from Rye

Absolutely dangerous charger. Soon after purchasing my mac book pro in 2012 the block started getting warm. It gradually started getting hotter and hotter and the spot where the cord attaches to the block became unattached and the wires are now exposed. Not only are the wires exposed, but I can see that some wires are breaking. I was trying to make it last longer and wrapped it in electrical tape, which worked for a few months, but I started to need to twist it around to make the charger work. I know this was a dangerous choice, but I wanted to make it last as long as possible before spending almost $100 on a new charger.

Apple, you need to fix this cord, especially because you aren't fixing this even though you have 1 1/2 stars for these chargers.

Love my Mac, not the charger!

    • Written by from Reynoldsburg

My magsafe finally died a couple of weeks ago. The top of the charger was coming apart and I had to wiggle it around to get it to connect to my computer. Luckily, I had a backup, but it isn't very reliable. I don't need to repeat what other reviewers have been saying so I'll keep it short, these cords have an awful design. Here is my real complaint, why do these chargers cost so much? Also, why isn't it possible to buy parts separately? I don't need the part that plugs into the wall, just the part that plugs into my computer. I'd be willing to buy 3 or 4 of them at a time. Stop forcing us to dish out $80 for a charger that doesn't last very long.

I am a college student and am on a very limited budget, i don't have 90 dollars to through around at yet an other mac book pro charger (my third one) just because it is a very simple little problem with a wire fraying on the inside of the adaptor. Please figure this out.

    Sincerely, a poor college student

Unless you never touch it, the cord will fray and eventually need to be replaced. During the life of your computer it will have to be replaced possibly several times. And to add insult to injury, if you borrow a charger the 85W and 60W chargers have the worlds tiniest writing, making it nearly impossible to tell apart. Absolute junk and not cheap, usually about $80 each time.

    This is absolutely crazy

    • Written by from Dover

This is my fourth apple adapter. The first 2 frayed near the brick. The 3rd & 4th the pins get stuck and don't make a clean connection. I am losing business because I can't keep my laptop charged! Are you serious? Not only money is being spent every 6 months on a new $80 charger, but I missed an important editing deadline because I couldn't charge my macbook pro. Not only did I lose the client, but I also get a nasty ribbing for not being professional. Thanks Apple, my professional reputation means a lot to me, what does your reputation mean to you? Please fix...your loyal customers are pleading with you... Are you listening?

    My Son's Power Adapter(S)

    • Written by from Silver Spring

My son bought his MacBook Pro in October of 2011. The laptop's still working well. However, he is on his third (or maybe 4th) power adapter. Someone at the Apple Store in our area always says he must be doing something wrong to cause the fraying. At first, I was blaming him. Now that I've read these reviews . . . maybe not! I have been a purchaser of Apple computers since 1990. This is the worst piece of equipment I've ever seen coming from your company. Disappointing.

This is the second time in two years I have to buy a new one. I take care of each charger but still it won't last much time. Too expensive. Apple should allow users to replace the ends, not the entire thing.
