I have downloaded pages of apps and none of them will project! I suggest saving your money and using a document camera to share your iPad on a large screen.

    Sooo limited

Only a few apps send output to an external display. (e.g. Keynote, but not Pages; not even Netflicks.) You will not see your iPod screen on the monitor. The connector does what it's intended to do, its the iPad that limited.

    Limited Use

If you are looking at using the cable to connect your iPad to a monitor for display content on the iPad, you will be disappointed. The Dock Connector to VGA Adapter only works with Keynote, Photos and Movies. It does not work with third party apps unless the developer utilize video out. So basically you spent $30 on a cable that could only do 3 things. I was looking at using it for displaying the iPad screen and do presentations at work. This is a limited functionality accessory and very pricey.

    No mirror screen

Wasn't Steve Jobs using a mirror screen in his iPad presentation? Sure, great that I can use this for Keynote and videos. But just mirror the screen. Apple fans deserve better.

    Worst thing I ever purchased

I purchased this adapter thinking it will mirror the ipad and was very wrong. I ended up purchasing keynote just so I can show my presentation in class. This wire is garbage, don't waste your time. Glad I used my reward points on this.

    an hour later

me: huh? this thing doesn't do anything of the sort.

    another hour later

    Rediculous, Pointless

Completely ridiculous that I have to pay 29 dollars for this and output is restricted to a second display depending on the whim of the app or license, whats the point, where else in my life would plugging a second display in not work depending on the app? why would you stop people watching the content on a second display?

Plug it in, image appears, thats as complex as it needs to be if you want people to use this function and feel happy with their purchase. This is a level of DRM and complexity that doesn't need to exist.

Pretty disappointed that I can't watch streaming video content from my Netflix and ABC apps...probably should have read the reviews instead of assuming this hardware would "just work" (in the Apple fashion to which we've all become accustomed) "like you'd expect it."

It's a good thing Apple has an accommodating return policy.

I really thought I could replace my net book for my business presentation, but its not going to work for me. I have no need or excuse for this nice toy if i wont be able to use it in the real world, what a bummer I was really exited about getting the Ipad but this little detail really makes the difference with me. Sorry apple great product but limited to my needs.

Works perfectly with my iPad 2, does not work with iPad 1- RTFM, people! Agree with other posters, the iPad connector often "slips" out while presenting. Why can't I connect to power AND VGA like the HDMI connector? Item needs to be redesigned.

These adapters only work with "certain" applications. Forget using the built in Apps such as Safari, etc. Not worth the money.

    Not what you think

    • Written by from Leicester

This adapter does not allow you to view the iPad screen. It just allows you to view whatever Apple allows you to. Yes you can view Keynote presentations in playback mode - but not in editing mode. No you can't view Pages or Numbers documents and no you can't view websites with Safari. Absolutely pointless for a teacher who wants to use the iPad in the classroom with a data projector.

Just like everyone else, I thought it would work normally and output what you see on the iPad -- it only outputs videos playing or slideshows or keynote presentations. Not very useful for me.

So VERY disappointed! Not only did I pay $29 bucks for the adapter, I also had to shell out another $25 for the duel male end cable to hook between the adapter and TV only to find it doesn't stream anything worthwhile. Oh sure, if I want to bore myself and others sensless with a slideshow it will work but I wantedt to be able to watch my Netflix movies with my husband through it onto the TV rather than just by myself on the iPad. Apple, I can't beleive you have such a HUGE limitation. I hope this gets fixed with the next upgrade SOON!

Not as advertised, and exposes a huge iPad functionality hole

Being able to view the iPad screen as is on a larger display is simply critical for any business or home use. not to mention it makes it useless for use with a motel tv when traveling. This is embarrassing. My iPad may go back.

Cannot display Safari web pages, cannot display video, cannot mirror iPad screen. What use is it? Not only that, the product description is deceiving and leads you to believe that whatever is on the iPad screen will display out the VGA port, but NO so!

Can't play movies downloaded from iTunes

The only purpose I bought the cable was to watch movies on my TV. My surprise, however, is that we can't play "protected movies" on the TV with this cable.
    Frustrated.

    Works great

I'm using this with an iPad 2, fully updated to iOS 5.1.1 and ALL apps (including DirecTV, videos purchased on iTunes, YouTube, Safari, Angry Birds, etc...) work just fine when connected to a monitor, widescreen TV, or projector. Keep in mind that it may not adjust the resolution to fit the TV so you might have black bars on the sides and such. DirecTV and videos seem capable of scaling to 16:9 aspect ratio of the TV.

The plug does come out pretty easily so it's best if you can just leave the iPad sitting flat on a stationary surface. VGA does not transmit sound so if you want to watch videos, you'll have to plan ahead or listen through the iPad.

I've also used this with an iPod Touch 4th Gen and the results are the same as with the iPad2.

I'm guessing the problems highlighted by other reviewers are for the original iPad. On my iPad 2, this product worked perfectly.

iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 will Mirror all apps

This VGA connector mirrors everything when it is connected to a iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 running iOS 5. I knocked a star off becouse it does not charge while you are using it like the HDMI adapter does. I hope Apple will redesign this down the road
