the product works, the users don't

I've been on the same macbook and same charger for 4 years. The product works great but you need to be smart about it. If your first charger broke pretty quickly, then expect every replacement to follow suit. What makes this product fail is the bending of the wire near the magsafe connector, which leads to fraying of the wire. To fix this issue, try not to bend your charger so much at the connector. Even after being cautious, after 3 years, mine started fraying at the connector. I simply used a bunch of electical tape and a small styrofoam piece to straighten out that part and conceal the fraying wires. The charger still works, except the orange/green light doesn't come on anymore. Considering the little button on the side tells if the computer is charging or charged, I don't really care about the orange/green light not working.

    Good Charger

I have had my MacBook 13in for 4+years(early2008) and my charger has only started to have issues sense Jan-2013. Though I am careful with my chords and do not wrap the chord around the plastic tabs on the brick. wrapping chords in that manner always shortens the life span of the chord.

though I am purchasing a new one now and think they should not cost $80 dollars.

    Ive had no problem

I read many of the other reviews and I really don't know what the others are experiencing. Ive had my original charger for almost 2 years and I have no fraying or damage whatsoever. Keep in mind, I have been VERY rough with it. It spends most times in my carpeted room but other times its being dragged down marble stairs and being moved from two different houses and being tripped over. The metal charger at the end is scratched a bit, but only from my own fault. Everything is intact and I have no overheating or charging problems. GOOD JOB APPLE.

Still pretty darn good charger in my opinion. I've owned 2 MacBooks and have gone through 3 chargers. One was chewed my dog, and the other was replaced by Apple care. The 3rd one broke, but that was my own fault. I think Apple would do themselves and their customers a favor by making the cord a little thicker, and perhaps stiffer where it connects to the computer and the box in the middle. However in my experience as long a you leave slack in the wire and make sure that they aren't bent to far for to long it should work perfectly.

With Typical Use -- It'll Last You Years

I don't think the average consumer who is happy with this adapter will decide to gush over it in an online review, but after seeing such a negative rating here, I have to disagree and provide my experience.

I've used this adapter everyday in tons of places and while it looks really dirty and worn, it's always worked like a charm. Design wise -- it's a thing of beauty with the bulk of it near the connection point and the ability to wrap the cable and clever clip on piece to keep the loop together.

I don't know how everyone else is using this adapter, and I'm sure there are always a few duds for one reason or another, but I'm super happy with durability here.

People complain about a quick snap or a weak hold, but isn't that the whole point of the magsafe system?? -- To have a connection that's manageable (with one hand in the dark! ) while not strong enough that a trip over the adapter cable will send your macbook pro flying?

    Power cords

The power cord left plugged in the wall and not attached to the computer will burn out. I have had the same power cord for 4 years and nothing has ever happened to it. Try unplugging it from the wall and I think you will find these cords last!

    Good while it lasts

I got this charger when I bought my Macbook Pro almost exactly two years ago. The charger never gave me any trouble until I tried to clean it. (It was very dirty, and I'm a little bit of a neat freak.) All I did was try to rub off some of the dirt from the chord near the part of the charger that goes into the computer with my finger. Apparently that was a huge mistake, because it rubbed the plastic off and left the wire exposed. I put some electrical tape on it to see if it'd hold up, and it worked for a couple of months until it just couldn't hold up anymore.

Now that I need a new one, I can't decide if I'll go with this one or a generic charger. Both have pretty bad reviews, and Apple charges way too much. It's just a charger for goodness sake.

My original charger just crapped out, from 2008. That's four years of really hard abuse. I can't honestly say I expect ANY cable to last that many years of rugged abuse. All the people complaining of bad power adapters within a years use must not realize they replace them free of charge within the first year....

    Mine lasted 3 years

Mine is just now starting to go. There appears to be a break near the magsafe connector and if the cable is jiggled wrong, the LED goes off.

Honestly, I have been pretty rough on this. Several hard snags that yanked the magsafe connection away -- and I'm notorious for unplugging by pulling on the cable and not the plug itself.

So, I can only think there was a bad batch of these since mine lasted with pretty harsh treatment. (I may just try to tape a think metal rod to it to keep it from bending - should do the trick.)

    Good charger

I have always noticed that people harp over chargers in general, since they seem to quit functioning so often for many folk, and these chargers are no exception. This isn't because the charger is poorly made, however. People simply do not understand that they have to treat cables very carefully. Bending them too forcefully will eventually cause the wires inside to fray and break, leaving you with; a malfunctioning charger. Take care of them and they pretty much last forever.

My only problem with these is that, once again, the square adapters fall out of wall sockets too easily.

Mine is from a Macbook I bought
in 2007. Has lasted me five years even
though the little green light didn't work after about
a year or two. My HD just bit the dust so got
a new cord w repair. I'd like to note that I left
mine plugged in a LOT. My battery was apparently
no longer holding a charge so got a new one
I'm about 120 cycles over what they usually
last. Sorry to hear bout those faulty cords
seems like the older ones were made better
    n'est ce pas?

    Decent Durability and Longevity

I've had my MacBook Pro since mid-2009. The original power adapter lasted until a week ago (about 3 years) and I subjected the cord to a lot. Taking extra care might have increased my adapter's longevity. I'd recommend purchasing a laptop-compatible bag with pockets to safely store the adapter and other accessories, something I didn't do. It has been the only thing to go on my computer in three years, and it was fairly cheap (about $80) to replace, so I can't really complain. In general, it serves its purpose and is reasonably durable.

The adapter is great and I love it. But it gets scratched easily and the top of the cord near the mag safe gets broken easily! Not such great price tag, but its excepted from Apple.

it lasts. i was on the fence whether to purchase another power adapter from apple or get a knock-off on amazon. the reviews of the knock-offs were actually worse than the reviews on the apple site. so since i wasn't looking forward to seeing a melted gooey lump next to my macbook i shelled out the 80 clams and bought the new adapter. so far i am very pleased, this is my 3rd adapter, apple did replace my first adapter & my 2nd adapter's magnet head broke off due to excess bending and with this new design i think this problem will b no more. i gave it 4 stars because i think the design change is significant and I would've given it a 5 but I don't want to apple to think I'm some cheap date.

A tip for power supply failures

    • Written by from Liberty Hill

On a Friday over five years ago I went to the Apple store and purchased six MacBooks and a Mac Mini as an office file server. I went back to my office, passed them out and let my Windows IT person go. I told my staff two things. "Go home and learn how to use this over the weekend. We are converting to Apple on Monday. Second, DO NOT wrap the power cable around the supplied "wings" on the power adapter because you will eventually damage the cord. Simply wrap it in a circle around a few fingers and run the end of the connector through the middle of the loop." It's been five years and we just had our first adapter failure. So, that's my story. Don't use the foldout storage on the power adapters. People tend to wind them to tight and break the internal wires next to the adapter. This obviously isn't the only reason for an adapter failure, but I'd be willing to bet some people are causing their own problems. There is room for improvement in the adapter or you would be able to use the built-in storage without a problem. Oh, and if the green light on the adapter is on make sure it is not just the fact that you need to reset your battery. I've had to do this on two machines after a few years. Plug the adapter into another Mac (if available) and see if it works.

I bought this cord in August because my cousin's cat, ate through the original that I got when I bought my macbook in 2008. I read other reviews saying that the cord stopped working after a few months of them buying it and hoped that I would have better luck. I left my computer open and not plugged up for a few hours and when I went to plug it up, there was absolutly NO charge coming from the cord. My computer is still dead b/c I don't feel like dishing out another $83 for a new cord, but I really don't have a better option because thats what Apple feels like they should charge. There really isn't anything you can do, but this is horrible

    No Complaints

I have been using Apple laptops for some years and with the first charger that came with my old white macbook I had a problem with, but since they have changed to the new design neither myself nor the wife has had an issue. What are people doing to bang them up and get them frayed.
I take care of how I wrap the cord when I need to take my laptop with me so no complaints at all, but I guess it is still early. I have had my Pro since July '11 and my wife has only had her air for a month. So no problem but I guess this is to be continued.

Got this adapter with my Late 2008 Macbook. It's keeping my MacBook alive for over 40 months now. Lately ,since about 1-2 weeks now, it sometimes won't connect properly with the MacBook. I just pull it out and back in and it works. Besides that awsome adapter.

    Lasted a long time!

Contrary to many reviews, my adapter lasted 3.5 years. I often brought it with me, so it did not last merely due to underuse. Recently I noticed that it had frayed near where the cord leaves the adapter to plug into the laptop. Today, though, it stopped working entirely.

It has served me very well, though! I hope the next one lasts just as long.
