Doesn't work in OS X Lion Recovery mode - Bootable USB Lion or Bootable DVD

    • Written by from LOVELAND

Unfortunately, when you are trying to work work with Magic Trackpad while Startup Disk is Bootable USB OS X Lion or Bootable DVD OS X Lion none of Trackpad functions
works except of just Arrow moving !!!!
When you buy this product, make sure you still have some other mouse in order to work in OS X Lion recovery or Main Disk Repair modes!

    Not Great

    • Written by from New York

It's a sobering moment to discover you're one of the undead, for
that's what happened to me when I started using this thing. I mean,
I must be a zombie - at least that's what my trackpad must think of me. Why else
would it not respond to my touch? My girlfriend has no problems with her
delicate fingers using it to zip through the pages, but I, apparently having no
pulse and, therefore, a cold touch can't get the friggin thing to work - not
unless I press down really hard. I'm using Snow Leopard, so I had to download and install a free third party software called MagicPrefs to get at least some of the fancy gesturing features to work. And even then I only get at best sporadic functionality - that is, when it finally and stubbornly decides to work for me. I'd been advised by an Apple rep to upgrade my OS to Lion. However, after not only hearing a cautionary tone in his voice about doing it but also reading so many negative reviews reminiscent of horror stories associated with Windows upgrades, I'm deciding to hold off, for now. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some flesh to eat and rotting to do.

Awesome with just a touch with just a little touch of argh!!

    • Written by from London

I asked for a Magic Trackpad for my birthday because I was looking for a swish solution for navigating around my designs while working on Adobe illustrator. Result I got it!

The pros of this stunning little device are plain as day. It looks beautiful sat here next to my equally stunning mac desktop. Design wise undeniably slick.

Added to this the wide variety of gestures available also make the Trackpad a joy to work with be it cruising the world wide web or flicking through folders. It honestly borders on a sic-fi experience.

That said I have a niggle here. For one thing the Magic Trackpad is on occasion perhaps a little smarter than me, acting in conspiracy with my fingers to produce sometimes undesired results. The proximity of gestures are perhaps a little close and I recommend not having all of them active to avoid the potential confusion.

Also my primary motive for owning the Trackpad has been an issue. The pinch zoom is not compatible with Adobe Illustrator CS5. I really hope someone more technically adept than me is working on this as I am typing this review.

So 4 out of 5 is the result. But it is definitely worth having one.

I want to like this product...

    • Written by from Forest Hills

Really, I do. It's a neat concept, but after a few weeks of getting used to it I still find it to be rather frustrating. I often find it highlighting and moving things against my will. It doesn't always respond to my attempts to click on links on icons no matter how many times I touch it. Other times a single touch will highlight the entire screen and not let go.
I'm sure there are fans who will declare that I simply don't know how to use it. They're probably right. But how good can it be if the product requires weeks of practice to master? Ease of use is a biggie. I went back to using my magic mouse and my blood pressure dropped instantly. Speaking only for myself, the Magic Trackpad is a rare disappointment from a company that usually hits it out of the park.

    A bit frustrating

    • Written by from KNOXVILLE

Bought this Trackpad when I upgraded to Lion OS.
Have used it for almost one month and still am learning. Many features/gestures have no use in my line of work/home use.
I've owned an iPhone and Macbook Air and had no problems with the touch gestures. Enjoyed the app on my iPhone that made it a 'touchpad'. But, this works differently.
This Trackpad has a generous surface area, which is part of the problem. Easy to have accidental touches (even to the edges of the trackpad) with dire consequences, and many gestures are frustrating.
Sometimes my pinky and/or ring finger will touch the pad while I'm scrolling and send me to another webpage or interpret the gesture as a 'swipe', or some other gesture and close the page all together.
Seems like 'up' is down, and 'down' is up. With my previous mouse or trackball and the 'window blind' controls on webpages, you'd pull 'down' to make the page scroll up, 'up' to make the page go scroll down. With this Trackpad, the gestures are as if you're touching the page, itself. Odd, since the pad is horizontal and the screen is vertical. And now, on many sites and in most dialogue boxes, with this Trackpad (and Lion update?) those 'window blind' controls on the edge of the website or dialogue box are gone!
Also, double clicks aren't always recognized, or sometimes are overly sensitive, regardless of the setting. I find it difficult to block/select a section of text or photo to highlight for editing or to copy and paste.
I regret this purchase. My $12 Blutooth mouse was cheaper, much simpler to operate and move, and not counter intuitive.

It's the most un-Windows product ever.

    • Written by from Pasadena

Well, thanks a lot Apple for that horrible packaging that wasn't at all perfectly minimal and that insanely complex pairing where I had to press a button and watch everything happen automatically and flawlessly. I swear, every new piece of Apple hardware is the best thing ever. Works on glass desk (that's too heavy to replace), gestures intuitive and much better than moving around the previously awesome Mouse. Seriously, doesn't even seem expensive with the build quality. Wish there were six stars for this one.

Just tried it out. I have Lion installed and it is super easy to navigate with it. I even dare to say it can beat trackpad of mac laptops.

I think in the future they should have it the default accessory for new macs.

I bought a Magic Trackpad over a week ago and I am just finally becoming comfortable with it. In fact, I am beginning to absolutely LOVE it. If you are an old ex windows (like me) be prepared fora long learning curve. Well worth the effort when you get there!

I bought this to replace my magic mouse - one of the earlier ones that had all the issues with gunk getting inside and not working properly. This trackpad does it all and works flawlessly! My wife and I both love it. A little pricey, but we come to expect quality along with price from Apple. It's worth it because it works, and works well.

It works great! This gives you a great large space to do all of the muli-touch gestures. I even prefer this over my MacBook Pro's trackpad because of the Magic Trackpads size. Great Product and a must have!!

    Quirky and buggy

    • Written by from Lakewood

I really WANTED this to work for me... but after using if for a couple of weeks, I realized it's extremely buggy and very inconstant with the gestures from one app to another. Cursor jumps all over the place and the same gesture doesn't always work twice in a row.

Save your money and the agony... Apple has NOT thought this one through yet.

    I like it...I hate it...I like it...I hate it...I like it

    • Written by from FITCHBURG

I bought one today (08/13/11). Historically I don't like trackpads but this is the way Apple is going to go with all the more possibilities that the Trackpad has. So I plugged it in, set some settings, made some more adjustments and went to work with it. After a while I confirmed that this is going to take some time (for mice people) to adjust to this device but I also realized that the Trackpad is much more precise. Most people new to the Trackpad may disagree but in a short time, say a few days or weeks, the Trackpad will become like an extension to my hand. The learning curve is short. Five stars and another great forward thinking product from Apple.

Using the MTP has been easy. In fact, it makes everything easier. I'm a graphic and web designer and no, it isn't for use with graphics software like photoshop, illustrator, etc. but that's not what this is for. This is for moving flawlessly through your mac, in between desktops or applications, and great when surfing the web. It responds in real time and it is extremely accurate. There are so many things you can do with it. I strongly recommend it. You won't regret it. Get it today...

    I'm amazed and mystified...

    • Written by from New York

...by the features of the Magic Trackpad.

Its elegant simplicity drew me in, but that's nothing compared to how useful it is. It's a truly great product.

It took me a couple of days to get used to the new way of scrolling (it's in the opposite direction from the original way), but now I can see and appreciate the change in the default.

I didn't have any serious complaints with my old mouse, but I think my hands were getting a bit cramped; now, that sensation is gone.

You've done a fine job on this one, Apple.

    Magic Trackpad

    • Written by from Corning

I was told by a fellow photographer friend that I should have the Magic Trackpad because it would make my workflow go so much easier ( I use Adobe Lightroom ). I was having trouble with the MM as well as my Wacom tablet (using the pen) when adjusting. I use the Magic Mouse as well and when I got it I was very pleased by what that could do however I just received my Magic Trackpad today and can say it does a lot more. It make my work flow with LR extremely easy and just using my computer for anything has made me more "one with the computer" Best $ I have spent yet. Apple (Steve Jobs etc) is/are amazing.
