Excelent display, Perfect for working and multitasking with my laptop.

    • Written by from miami

This display is excelent for working, It makes things more organized. I have it connected with my Macbook, and it makes easier things, as I can have email opened in one screen and browsing opened in the other. It is just perfect for productivity when working in several things at a time.

However. I wish I could change from 2560x1440 (which is default resolution) to 2058x1152 without affecting the sharpness of the images. It just won't look as perfect as you want so you won't use it. In my case I wanted to see things bigger without having the Display so close, but by now I will have to continue like this.

I recommended to every mac user.

Too much reflection causing eye pain and headache.

    • Written by from Philadelphia

I'm a motion designer, work with two of these monitors side by side 8-10 hours a day. After all the eye pain and headache, I now switched back to the old Apple display (matte) as my main monitor, and put the new glossy ones on the side as my secondary monitors.
I think it's ok to use it in a dark room, but I have a window office and it's pretty bad even I have all the shades down.

I'm giving two stars for its sharp image quality as a secondary monitor for web browsing and tool bars, you just can't use them for work.

    Awesome display

    • Written by from Berkeley

Absolutely the best display I have ever owned. Don't listen to negative comments about the gloss. It's not a problem at all. It actually make the display even more vibrant.

Lack of antiglare option mars great display

    • Written by from Hubbards

I use 30 inch and 20 inch Apple Cinema displays. They have been fantastic - in particular for extended close-up use such as photo editing. This new display is gorgeous but, compared to the previous cinema displays, is simply unusable in certain circumstances due to reflections. This display is crying out for an antiglare option. Apple offers this on some MacBook Pros, why not this display? Many users will be willing to pay a bit extra for this option.

    So far, so good!

    • Written by from Honolulu

My main point of comparison is an old 23" Cinema Display and the 27" LED is better in most regards: higher rez, brighter, instant warm up, wider viewing angle and runs cool as a cucumber. It's plugged into my "ancient" 2009 MacPro and has proved to be the perfect monitor for working in Aperture and Photoshop. I wish it had both Firewire and USB ports like the older display but that's a minor nitpick. The older display had a matt finish and, yes, I would have preferred the same for the 27" LED. However, the matt finish does help reduce glare but only in a minor way. You need to use a monitor hood or dark corner for glare free viewing with either monitor.

The main gotcha with the 27" LED is the silly short cable. I had to drill a hole through the middle of my desk to reach the MacPro beneath (nobody keeps a MacPro on their desk!). The 2 prior Cinema Displays I owned had ample cable length, so I was surprised Apple cut corners here in an otherwise great product. The speakers are terrible so you'll want a set of decent monitors if you listen to music or watch movies. So A- or B+ on this puppy but well worth the money.

Best display I have ever owned!

    • Written by from East Brunswick

Many have wondering if the steep $999 price is worth the money. After spending several days with this display, I can say that this is 100% worth the price. First of all, the screen is crisp and beautiful, the best I've probably ever seen. While there is a ton of gloss, I am used to it from my MacBook Pro. If you have sensitive eyes, this would not be the right display for you unless you are able to find some sort of matte screen protector. The sound quality is excellent for built-in standards. It's loud, deep, and crisp. My only real complaint is the fact that my MBP must be charging at all times. When I take out the magsafe adapter, even with the MDP cable and USB cable plug in, it disconnects from the display. Other than that, I would highly recommend this to any Mac user looking for a gorgeous and sleek looking monitor, unless they have sensitive eyes and/or cannot stand gloss.

Glass not a deterrent to real designers

    • Written by from Markham

This sad rant about glass in front of the panel is just silly, because designers used to work on curved and reflective Trinitron screens for a decade+. No one ever griped about reflections then, which were most certainly worse.

Fact is, a company either has to put glass in front of their panels or an AG coating. I personally can't stand AG coatings, because they crush and distort very fine detail with specs of light. With glass, I just keep it out of direct sunlight and I get a perfectly smooth image that reveals tiny details and colour fluctuations.

This monitor may have problems at times with yellow tint or some dark areas, but the glass is a non-issue to my design work.

    It's Just Awesome!!!

    • Written by from Fair Lawn

I love this product. I knew I wanted it to compliment my Macbook Pro I7 the minute I saw it. Then I saw all the negitive reviews about "gloss" and not being "professional" and such. I then began to seek out other monitors on the market and all of them...Just. Did. Not. Compare.

I am a film major at a college in Manhattan and I use this all the time for my films and they look fantastic. As for "glare", it's fine and does not take away from it's beauty at all, just dim the lights a bit and everything is all gravy.

I watch anything from NEetflix to HD movies to DVD's on it and it looks fantastic. I wish there were more imput options, but it doesn't matter in the end because if you're are Mac savvy even in the least, you can easily work your way around any issue.

I've had this display for almost a year and I have no regrets buying it. Works great and I have the best of both worlds ( a Macbook Pro with some serious power, i.e I7 processor and 8 gigs of RAM and a Display that turns it into a desktop)

    You just gotta love it!

    Glare, definition

    • Written by from Chicago

The earlier reviewers that complained about the glare are right. I can only work on it with the blinds down. Moreover, it has less definition than a good laptop screen. All in all, a somewhat disappointing product and not a good quality/prize ratio.

Glossy screen makes this completely unusable

    • Written by from San Diego

Unless you work in a cave, this screen is completely unusable. I work from home and I have large windows directly behind my workstation. The eye strain caused from reflections on this monitor is so bad I'm probably going to have to return it, which is disappointing considering everything else about it is 5 star worthy. The reason I gave it one star is because the primary purpose of this monitor is be able to SEE the things you are working on. I would have purchased a large mirror if I wanted to see myself all day long... After years of buying Apple products, this is my first truly disappointing purchase from an otherwise stellar company.

    Beautiful, but no sound

    • Written by from Shoreline

I've had problems with the audio dropping out, and Apple hasn't been able to fix it. Some of them work, and Apple tech told me, and some of them don't. Mine doesn't.

Good design, should make a product useful. - Dieter Rams

    • Written by from Groningen

I've tried this display, loved it for its features and tried to think of every excuse imaginable to keep it.

    However, I didn't.

I'll keep it short, as many users/reviewers have already pointed this out.

This screen is way, and I mean WAY too reflective. I'm a graphic designer and to make this display useful, I would have to change my whole lighting plan, move the windows and….in essence...create a dark room to have this screen operating at its full potential.

Any light from behind me, any dark color, any movement behind me, will DISTRACT my focus from the screen, and FOCUS it on the REFLECTION.

This is where Apple's "we are trendsetters, and we are right 99% of the time" becomes their Achilles heel.

In design there’s a principle. Form Follows Function.

The FUNCTION of a display is to be able to SEE things (in the highest detail possible) on THAT screen.
ANY OTHER ARGUMENTS AND ADDITIONS like "glass is easier to clean, the colors are deeper, it has a webcam and USB!" are SECONDARY. AND NOTHING MORE.

If there's a petition going, set up by people who get headaches, eye-strain, back pain (because they subconsciously adjust their posture to get rid of the reflections'), it’s a SIGN.

If its signed by thousands….it’s a bigger SIGN.

It’s a statement that doesn't say: APPLE you’re Wrong. Its says: APPLE, we love your products so much, and we’d love to buy them, but PLEASE listen to us.

It’s not 'complaining', it’s almost begging Apple to make something that will easily cost them a thousand dollars, that’s a bit more useful.

    Please Apple, take note.

Good design, should make a product useful. - Dieter Rams

    AMAZING!!!!!!!!

    • Written by from Chester

Do not listen to the negative reviews about the gloss! I have not had any problems with the gloss! It looks beautiful, and does not impact the functionality of the display at all, unless you like pointing your lights at it!!!!

    MUST BUY!!!!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE The Glossy Screen

    • Written by from MILWAUKEE

I've been using this display for about 5 months and I think it's perfection. The glossy screen makes everything look bright and crisp. To those weenies who can't stop complaining about the gloss: GET OVER IT! Should Apple be designing for badly lit workspaces? Reposition your display, get new lighting, get window blinds - just don't ask that Apple design to substandard work environments.

    Far to glossy

    • Written by from Wichita

This item is far too glossy to be useful anywhere other than a dark basement. It's a great design though. Should be a little more affordable too.

Have to Agree About the Shine

    • Written by from Lewisburg

I made a special trip out to State College to see one of these monitors and decide for myself about the impact of the shiny surface and find I have to agree with other negative comments about the shine. In any dark area all I could see was my reflection of the reflection of stuff behind me. For me, it would be next to useless for video editing given the windows in my workspace.

I am rather near-sighted and also wear bifocals and it didn't take long for me to feel the eyestrain build up refocusing between reflections and image. For older eyes, this is not going to be a comfortable display to use. I'll probably go with an NEC product that offers a matte surface.

    Great monitor

    • Written by from Brambleton

I got this in June 2011. While it seems pricey at first, at the time there was no other 27" monitor on the market that had anything near this monitor's resolution (2560x1440). From what I could find, only the NEC PA271W-BK, which costs about 40% more, was even close to the Apple 27".

While there are many other less expensive 27" monitors out there, they typically max out at a resolution of 1920x1024.

Also consider that it has a built-in camera and speakers, I thought it's a pretty darn good deal.

I use it for photo editing, and rarely do the reflections become an issue. I have it arranged so there are no lights or windows behind me to cause glare.

A great display typical of Apple's quality.

    • Written by from South San Francisco

Fantastic display! Picked it up today for the office to compliment my MacBook Air. Bright, great color, sound, and Apple's build quality totop it off. Take the complaints about the glossiness with a grain of salt. It can't please everyone. This also makes a great 2nd monitor to your iMac.
