    Cool, but tiring

    • Written by from Grandville

I switch from Dell/Windows to Apple/OSX last year when I moved into iOS and Rails development. I've come to appreciate the simplicity and lack of clutter in this new environment. So when I needed a mouse for my MacBook Air I went with this Magic Mouse. I wanted to like it since it's simple and clean.

Unfortunately, it's just not comfortable. First it's too heavy. It's actually tiring after a while. My guess is this comes from the 2 AA batteries vs the single AA all of my other wireless mice have. I recently used a cheap Logitec mouse and going back the light weight felt very freeing.

Second, the button requires too much effort to push.

Third, the track speed is way off from other mice I'm used to. I had to speed it way up in Preferences just to be tolerable.

Lastly, I sometimes click the wrong button. I've set it up for left and right clicks since that's what I'm used to. Occasionally I land a left-click when I intend right.

So, I'll keep it, but I won't be falling in love with it. It will probably end up on my wife's computer where it won't get a lot of use...but will look really nice.

    Mighty good for 6 months.

This mouse was mighty impressive. But after 6months it refused to work, my mighty mouse is now alas mighty DEAD. Very frustrating waste for $79.

    Beautiful, but terrible battery life

    • Written by from Oconomowoc

PLEASE, Apple, make a beautiful, functional mouse like this one that is wired. Changing batteries so often is a drag, as is the difficulty in getting the panel off and on to get at them. Also, the computer invariably cannot "find" the mouse once I've changed the batteries, requiring shutting down the computer completely, and possibly other maneuvers. I know your great company is capable of rectifying this situation. Had I known of these problems beforehand, I wouldn't have bought it.

It is potentially not bad but in reality it isn't exactly good.

    • Written by from Struthers

I want to like this mouse, but I can't. Right click/left click. It's all a big guess. Even when I press on the absolute far right and far left sides, the mouse still can't make up its mind.

I like the touch, sort of. It's a nice idea that works but doesn't work. Things can be going fine and then I just touch it in the right way... uh oh, there went the text box that I was typing in. Swiping on it is convenient except when it isn't. This mouse is just a continuous contradiction.

I would prefer it if my logitech mouse from my windows PC worked on this computer. It's far more usable than this magic mouse and all of the buttons do what they're supposed to do. Sadly, logitech doesn't support OS X very well.

reliable connection from up to 33 feet away? Totally bogus

    • Written by from Portland

I recently purchased this mouse from Apple along with a new mini for my home theater setup thinking I would receive a "reliable connection from up to 33 feet away". My surfing sofa is 13 feet away with an unobstructed line-of-sight to the mini. Occasionally from 13 feet I actually do receive a normal mouse like experience, however 95% of the time it is what must be like surfing on quaaludes. You know, you move the cursor and 2 seconds later it moves, or a slight touch to scroll results in either light speed to the top or to the bottom of the page. I am typing this review from 7 feet away and it works flawlessly, but........APPLE, IT IS NOT FROM 33 FEET OR ANYTHING CLOSE TO THAT AND IT WORKS LIKE THE KIND OF STUFF I PICK UP AFTER MY DOG. I do not want to have to spend time and energy taking this back to the happy concerned faces at the local Mac store. That is not part of the grand bargain which is..... you tell the truth in your marketing and I buy your products, we both win and I do not find myself writing unpleasant reviews. Incidentally, this is the second of 2 wireless mice I have purchased from Apple. The first one with the little cute roller ball that gums up did not work either.

    Really Poor Battery Life

    • Written by from Saint Louis

I purchased a magic mouse with my iMac about six months ago, and have been shocked at how quickly it runs through batteries. I have rechargeable AAs but have to swap them out every couple of weeks when -- out of nowhere -- the mouse will lose its connection to the computer. The mouse is also very slow to reconnect, or start back up when it wakes up out of sleep mode. Although I like the mouse when it works, the poor battery life alone makes it not worth the purchase.

    Poor Ergonomics and Usability

    • Written by from Dallas

I've used high DPI gaming mouses (not for games, though) before and tried this mouse. This mouse is too slow even if I make the tracking speed as fast as possible and it is far less precise and has poor ergonomics.

I'm returning this mouse. It's a shame because the touch gesture feature is so nice..

    Pros:
    -Touch gesture
    -Pretty
    -Wireless

    Cons:
    -Poor ergonomics
-Click requires a lot of pressure
    -Slow/imprecise tracking
    -Heavy
    -Too much friction

    Disappointed

    • Written by from ROME

I was hesitating to write this review..yes I am an Apple cultist....but I am throughly disappointed in the Magic Mouse that is not...well...very magical. There are many who love it and I give kuddoes to those who do...however I am on my second Magic Mouse. I bought a new iMac 21.5 about a month ago and had so many problems with the mouse Apple replaced it.
Perhaps my problem is that I am not used to it yet....I can't tell you how many times I have been on the Internet and filling out a form or writing something in a forum, etc and the page suddenly moves/disappears...I must have accidentally breathed on the mouse and I end up losing what I was doing..."sigh" is all I can say. I am going toy give it another month or so and see if it is the Mouse or me.....I love pretty much everything Apple and this is what makes me so surprised about..I don't like this Mouse..yet anyway. Rant over

Well designed and easy to use

    • Written by from Annapolis

I had considered buying one for a while but was hesitant since I saw reviews that said it was uncomfortable to use. I bought one anyway and I am glad I did since I feel those reviews are not accurate. The mouse is designed so it moves easily so you don't have to grip it hard to move it. If you gripped it really hard I could see how the edges would hurt after a while, but it is so light you don't need to and in fact I feel I actually barely touch it when using. I think it is actually very comfortable to use since it doesn't take much effort to move, click or scroll so your hand is more relaxed. I find it very comfortable, easy to use, and beautiful while aiding in my productivity at the same time. Personally I feel it is worth the money and I am very happy with mine.

    Don't waste money

    • Written by from Trento

I have bought this mouse, because there is nothing else there with rich Apple-compatible gestures or 2D inertial scroll. Here are three negative points.

    1) It takes time to get used to the shape. And when you do, holding a regular ergonomic mouse is still like drinking cool water on a hot day. Shape is really something look-at-me only.

    2) It consumes huge amount of battery power. The mouse costs a lot and be ready to buy new batteries every 2-3 weeks depending on usage. For comparison, at my workplace I have been using Logitech wireless laser mouse (not Bluetooth) for more than a year every work day. I have never replaced batteries yet. Amazing!

    3) Even though it swallows batteries like pills, the connection is very unstable. It connects to the Mac from 6 meters away as well as loses the connection once in an hour even with new batteries during normal operation.

Positive points are: it's beautiful, it's innovative and it's Apple. Consider buying another traditional mouse that will work perfectly.

    Poor design, expensive to operate

    • Written by from Lake Jackson

I have a very hard time controlling the movement of the cursor with this mouse. There is no control for allowing it to respond to more subtle movements. My cursor jerks around the screen, whizzes to the end of long documents and catalogs of photos when my hand barely touches the device. Totally uncontrollable. And, yes, I have looked at all the possible settings. There are none that help.

Moreover, this mouse eats batteries. They last an unbelievably short time even when I turn it off between each session. My last set of Duracell alkaline "Ultra Power" batteries lasted less than 60 days. I feel certain that this mouse is either not functioning as it should or is just a poor design from the start. I hate to waste money at the Apple Store. I expect to get the best there. I did not in the case of this product.

Looks nice, feels nice, but is a pain in the you know what!

    • Written by from Cody

While this mouse is great due to its bluetooth connection, the battery life is so short and thus too frequently it losses connectivity. Doesn't seem to matter if one turns it off in between use. Come on, Apple, you can do much better!

    Horrible Product

    • Written by from Denver

I love apple products, but this is the worst experience I have ever had. The battery life is horrible and it takes a very long time to register the mouse when you turn on/wake up the computer. I usually get a message that says a mouse has not been detected and then it will finally detect it. I do not advise buying this product. I am very disappointed that apple would make such a horrible product.

    Love this Mouse

    • Written by from Ottawa

I've used this mouse on my Mac Mini for over 3 years and never had any connection issues. Battery has never been an issue since I've always used rechargeables for my mice. Love it so much I just bought another one for my MacBook Air 11" to replace a Logitech which I also dearly love.

The mouse is a bit different to get used to in form factor but I find if I use a mouse pad with a wrist support I don't feel any awkwardness or discomfort.

Speed of the mouse is slow at first install but fully adjustable in system settings.

To take advantage of all the gestures in a Mac, I would highly recommend this mouse!
