Wonderful keyboard, but what's with the extension cable

    • Written by from DALLAS

I love Apple keyboards. This is my third along counting my 2 wireless keyboards. I just don't understand why it's so difficult to insert and remove usb devices from the extension cable that connects to the side ports. I'm a big guy and it took me quite a bit of strength, some cloth to improve my grip, and about 10 - 15 minutes to get it loose.

    French Apple Keyboard

    • Written by from Montreal

Great little keyboard. I use it to enter a lot of numerical data in Number spreadsheets; so the numeric keypad comes in very handy. I love the feel of the keys and the appearance of the keyboard. The convenience of the numeric keypad cannot be understated.

    Fast Typing, Light Touch

    • Written by from OAK HARBOR

I love this keyboard and now I need another one. I wore it out through writing and fast typing and also playing word games online. It is the most responsive keyboard I have ever used. This keyboard with a KB Large Type Keyboard Cover made my typing quieter and faster.

    Great Keyboard

    • Written by from Chestnut Hill

I commit every possible keyboard sin from gaming on this little guy to eating and drinking on him. I've been with this keyboard since December mid 2011. My Mini is a mid 2011, 2.5Ghz machine and I love it This is my second OSX mac and I like this keyboard far better than the old lucite looking keyboard.

The difference between this and the $20.00 keyboard and mouse combos I used to get for my PC's is incredible. In fact, I can't think of a keyboard I like better than this, except for may be the wireless version. I pair this keyboard with a magic mouse and an Xbox 360 controller to make for a very pleasant user experience.

Right now, this keyboard is a bit darkened, has been sweat dripped, coffee shot and had sandwich crumbs blown out of it, and still, it is the best keyboard I've used in the 30 years I've worked with computers.

    not backwards compatible??

    • Written by from Madison

I had the previous version of this keyboard, and I love the design. Now, three years later I needed another for work, so I bought one new this week, assuming it was the same product.

I find that it works fine, except for the top row of function keys, which are no longer correctly recognized by my Snow Leopard OS X. Reading the product details more closely I now see that this was never guaranteed. I didn't even think to look at the OS X compatibility previously, since... it's a keyboard. My mistake.

For those of us who code with highly customized MacBook Pros, upgrading to a new OS X can be a time consuming and not always worthwhile undertaking. So it's irritating when Apple's own products (especially something so simple as a keyboard) are no longer fully compatible with an operating system of their own design that is only 3 years old.

For now I will just deal with the top row of keys being unusable until I have time to try updating my OS X. But, this is both frustrating and disappointing.

usb hub took out wired keyboard

    • Written by from Davis

I love the Duo core Intel iMac, except it has only 3 usb ports, so tried to use an old usb hub we had. The hub was "drawing too much power" so the Max "disabled" the port. The result was a nonfunctional wired keyboard. The caps lock stays on, but all keys are unresponsive, even on another computer. No answer from my inquiry on the forum as to whether it is dead or not. I guess I have to buy another. Grr. The wireless one gave up the ghost after just 1 year of use, and now I have to purchase another wired one.

    Don't Try This...

    • Written by from Tucson

A week ago I moved from one house to another. After the move I could not find my keyboard, anywhere. I was about to buy another. Then, I had to move a bunch of stuff off the back patio to make room for a delivery and there she was, sitting bright and shiny as could be...except...it had rained, hard, for several hours, for several days. I had no hope. I shook off the drops of remaining water and figured I could do no wrong if I plugged it in. Or could I? It worked without flaws. I am typing on it now. Go figure. And I refuse to answer any questions about how I could possibly not see it out there on the patio getting wet.

    Looks great. But...

    • Written by from Laramie

...the USB extension cable is useless. It has a flange on the female that prevents it from hooking into anything. Why would Apple design a cord that cannot be connected to a flash drive or other standard USB devices? Strange.

    Wouldn't use any other KB

    • Written by from Durham

Lightweight, rugged, and comfortable typing. I use the number pad frequently, but it also helps to orient my fingers on the keyboard. The two USB ports on the keyboard are a must-have for any desktop.

I think these are great. Light, well designed, quiet, and fun to work with. I do wish there was a backlight version like the laptops, that would be super helpful. Maybe a wireless one as well.

Great KB, only wish there was a wireless version

    • Written by from Red Deer

I've had this KB for three years. Wife and I love everything about it. A year ago our iMac stopped going to sleep so after numerous diagnostic calls to AppleCare, the tech's last ditch effort was to try another KB. Luckily we had our little wireless KB which we never used as we need the full numeric KB. Long story short, the KB was the cause. I guess one of the keys somehow became defective and it was only evident from the iMac's sleep behaviour. Apple replaced it and it's been great again since.

This is the first time we've ever experienced a KB failure which makes me a little leery about its long term reliability but outside of this issue it's been fantastic so we're happy with it. Our only wish is for Apple to make a wireless version of this.

    Good but fragile keyboard

    • Written by from La Tuque

There's two sides to this keyboard.

The good side is when it's brand new, if you're used to laptop keyboards, you will feel right at home. If you're not used to laptop keyboards, once you get used to the Apple aluminium keyboard, you will have a hard time to go back to regular-sized keys which have "stairs" in each row, it will feel like going back to a 1980's keyboard. That's how good the Apple aluminium keyboard is, anything else feels like a step into the past.

The bad side of this keyboard is that it will get clogged. It's not a question of it, it's a question of when. The problem is that removing the keys to remove dust, fur, hairs, etc. will probably break the keys if you're not careful. The larger keys are especially problematic, the space bar doubly so. The way the keyboard is designed, mechanically, is really great but the actual product could be more sturdy, especially the small metallic loops that hold the keys to the keyboard.

If those small metallic loops could be more sturdy and the whole thing easier to clean, this keyboard would deserve six stars out of five. Unfortunately, since it's designed to be good-then-throw-it-away (recyclable or not), it only deserve three stars.

I would buy one again if those two flaws could be fixed. Actually, with those flaws fixed, I'd probably buy a few to have spares for a few decades.

    Great Product - Very Durable

    • Written by from Elkhart

Have had this keyboard for 4 years. Still like new. A very durable and nice keyboard. I've used mine in not the cleanest of atmospheres and it has kept on ticking. A great product for the price. Makes me wonder how those who have gave it such low ratings have used it.

    Died within a year

    • Written by from brooklyn

It's a nice looking and feeling keyboard but this was my second one in 3yrs. Keys just stopped working. the caps/shift keys are slow to respond which makes it hard to type just about anything. Can't open it to clean/repair since it's glued and doesn't have screws. I like the general feel but the other things are a big bummer. For $50 I don't want to have to buy a new one every year!

Buy a new one every year and a half!

    • Written by from Spring Hill

After 18 months of use, the entire middle row of this keyboard stopped working. I tried to fix it using all the methods outlined in the keyboard troubleshooting pages on the Apple site to no avail. It had to be replaced. There was no spillage, no Windex sprayed into it, no dropping it on the ground, nothing to warrant it breaking. Just normal, regular use. Obviously after reading some reviews I find that I am not the only one with this issue. Furthermore I find it very odd that all of the similar, negative reviews of this keyboard mentioning reliability are found less "useful" with more "thumbs down." I would think that a "my keyboard died in 18mo of regular use" review is much more useful than an "zomg I just got it it's so cooool" review.

Honestly I find a keyboard that dies in such a short amount of time unacceptable, especially from a company that sells expensive products. I have never, EVER had a keyboard die on me. I'm pretty sure my first one from '95 still works. There's obviously something faulty with this model and Apple should care to look into it as I don't feel like buying another faulty replacement. Honestly, I'm not going to comment that it is nice, because it doesn't matter how nice it is if it dies so quickly. What an absolute waste!

Great... BUT some keys just stopped working

    • Written by from Cape town

This keyboard is almost perfect. I loved it. Nice and sturdy. No need for recharging batteries. Keys are nice and easy and doesn't make a noise when you type, like the previous white keyboard. So
Had it for two years now and all of a sudden the "m" "j" "u" and "7" keys just stopped working. No damage or fault on my side caused it. Through a bit of online research, it became apparent, that I'm not the only one with this problem. All the keys are in a row, and the apple store said there's nothing they can do, I must just buy a new one. :( Now it doesn't matter that I love it. It's not possible to work on it.
