    Mini DVI to VGA

Written by BB from Los Angeles

    5-Nov-2009

As with most people, I always thought to keep my accessories from previous MACs to use on newer models.
That doesn't work this time. I had kept my mini DVI to VGA cord from my iBook G4 to use with my 2007 Macbook. I just found out today that the ports on these two models are different.
So, now I have to cough up more money to buy a cord that will work. And I believe there is no mention of this change as the ports are just referred to as "mini DVI" ports...not "mini DVI 2" like they refer to USB 2.0 or Firewire 400 and/or 800.

I recommend to everyone; before you get excited at the prospect of watching your Family Guy episodes you downloaded from iTunes on your new flatscreen TV, make sure you know if you have the proper cord (if you kept one from a previous Mac).
    Best of Luck.

I got this product for my Macbook. I am gonna dual screen my Macbook to my 32" Samsung Tv. I suggest that everyone make sure what model your Mac is before purchasing any Mini Dvi Adapter. Because they are different Like with this one.

For the most part it is pretty useful for connecting your macbook to your hdtv. But I wish the one end of the cable fit a little more securely in my computer.

Works with Mac mini (Early 2009) too

    Written by AD from Houston

    22-Sep-2009

This adapter works with the Mac mini (Early 2009), notwithstanding a claim to the contrary by another reviewer. My Pioneer plasma TV has a "PC" wide XGA (analog) port for connecting to a Mac or other personal computer. The Mac mini automatically recognized the available resolutions and color profile. The picture is beautiful. Couldn't ask for more.

Mini DVI to VGA Adapter works just fine with VGA connections. Apple only dropped connections to analog...ANALOG IS DEAD! AOK with digital. So it will work with any digital VGA monitor/display. If you are connecting to analog, then you will have problems.

BEWARE! Does not work with the 2009 Macbook White!

Written by PB from East Aurora

    5-Sep-2009

Buyer beware! I bought this retail, and nowhere on the packaging does it mention this problem. It is somewhat hidden on this pages (linked to with a little *). It does work great when it works (as my friend's laptop can vouch), but if you have a Macbook White, it just doesn't work!

Does not work with Mac Mini

    Written by GD from Milano

    3-Sep-2009

I bought this adapter some time ago for my MacBook (white, 2007) and it worked flawlessly.
Then I bought a new Mac Mini (2009) and it didn't work. After some googling I found that Apple had dropped support for analog signals in the mini-DVI port.
    Very bad.

Coming from PC laptops - I LIKE IT!

    Written by DP from Westbrook

    21-Aug-2009

I've had mine in service for about 2.5 years; it hooks my MacBook up to an old Envision 17" inch monitor and works flawlessly.

I once had a problem when running dual monitors (laptop and 17 monitor at very different resolutions) where I unhooked the monitor from the laptop while it was active. Then tried to watch a movie on the laptop and it got confused at which resolution to run. The people at the Apple Store (thanks you guys) and online help instructed me as to the proper procedure to unhook the monitor and the problem was resolved. They also showed me another way to fix it when it is unplugged while the laptop is active.

    If, I remember correctly:

    1. put the laptop to sleep then unplug the monitor.
    2. go to System Preferences > displays > gather monitors also solved the issue.

I like it because the adapter is small and very portable. Specifically, I like the mini DVI on the laptop because it is also small and helps therefore in keeping all the connections on the left side of the MacBook.

I'm not sure what the actual useful differences are between VGA and DVI, but I am looking forward to someday trying DVI to DVI as VGA has been around a long time.

What an unbelievably bad and unnecessary product this is

    Written by KS from Helsinki

    16-Aug-2009

Thank you Apple for first of all NOT making a standard VGA port on the Macbook, but instead making it necessary to spend an astonishing 18 euros ($25!!) on a useless dongle, to be able to connect it to an RGB port. And yes, you still need to, it's actually quite rare for a conference room to have something with an HDMI, let alone a DVI connection!

Second, it's unbelievably finicky, and almost impossible to get it to stick to the mini-DVI port without falling off.

And the worst part - it just broke down. Didn't take even a year.

problems with miniDisplayPort to VGA adapter

My mDP worked for about a week before failing completely. I wasted a lot of time then went to the nearest Apple store. No questions asked, no receipt required -- they replaced it with a new one that works...so far.

Just got it in a few minutes ago, and it works perfectly! The only problem with the negative reviews is that they order the wrong adapter! Do what I did, and really research it!

The delivery was faster then I ever expected. All in all, 5 stars.

    AMAZING.... but be carfull

    Written by AT from ETOBICOKE

So when I purchased this cord i had no doubt that I would be impressed, and I was! it was amazing it worked great and improved my computer use so much! But however I noticed one thing that could be easily fixed, I found that the mini DVI side of the cord easily fell out or got disconnected, this resulted in the displays having to reset, which does not take long but can be a bother. So make sure that your cord is in there nice and tightly and not in a awkward position.

Other that than it was a amazing product!

be careful to get the correct adapter for 13 inch macbook

    Written by EH from Dublin

This adapter does not fit the new 13 inch macbook even though it says it does in the ad. For this you need the mini displayport to VGA adapter. Don't make the same mistake i did. That said they sent me out the correct one free of charge.

I am the Video specialist for our church. We just bought a new iMac with which needed the Mini connection. We have had the set up for over a month and have had absolutely no problems. Knowing we needed this type of connection was a different situation. The computer was so new that even the sales rep didn't know we needed the newer connection.

The Mini DisplayPort IMHO is a disaster!
Received two new MacBook Pro's a couple of weeks ago. First time one was used we had problems with Dual-link DVI display
Second unit developed a fault with its Mini DisplayPort to VGA connector (no blue displayed - very embarrassing during a client presentation!)
Apple need to deal with this

    Should We Abandon All Hope?

    Written by SR from Abilene

    12-May-2009

Unfortunately, the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter is an abomination. From the humble beginner, to the fanatic, to the ardent professional Apple provides amazing computing power but this item's numerous negatives diminishes that functionality enough to make you question Apple's commitment.

    1. Fitment issues: deplorable connectivity/attachment to the machine, and it is not universal.
    2. Adapter length is ludicrously too short.
    3. Prone to frequent and various image distortions
    3. The coupe de grace, the functional life expectancy is appallingly short.

Apple customers want, need, expect and demand superior products but this 'adapter' wreaks of red herring! Apple & Apple customers, I beseech you, this is the proverbial straw!

Be careful if you have a new iMac

    Written by RN from Harrogate

    1-May-2009

Despite what it says in the description of this connector it does NOT fit the latest model of iMac (Intel Core Duo) - by which I mean the 20" or 24" screen ones.

These models now have the Mini Displayport connector (even though the website does not mention the iMac in that cable's description).

I had to replace both the cables I had bought with my new iMac based on what it says on the website. Good service from Apple though - the new cable arrived 2 days later!

    Works just fine.

    Written by MS from Ferguson

The adapter works fine, but you have to be aware of which adapter you need for your computer. It's extremely frustrating that the adapters keep changing with the new models. It would be helpful if apple included the correct adapter with the computer, especially with the laptop models. It seems to me they used to do that.
