    It just works

    • Written by from Toronto

Plugged it in 9 months ago and it's worked perfectly since then. No issues at all. Also, it's a very nice size, smaller than I expected.

    Disappointed Apple Endorses it

    • Written by from Spring

I bought this drive because it was show cased at the Apple store. I took the representation as some endorsement of a reliable product. Obviously, it is not. I am with the majority of the reviewers and think this is a terrible drive. I don't think I have used it a dozen times and now my iMac and MacPro go crazy flashing messages until I unplug it. I submitted for an RMA with WD. I would rather not have it fixed, I would prefer credit towards another product, hoping it must be better than this one.

I purchased the device to store my large photoshop files on. It worked the first 3 times I used it, but after that it would not connect to my computer. I would have to try about 4 to 5 times of replugging it, or restarting my computer. I should have read the reviews before purchasing.

You said to ignore the other 1-star reviews...

    • Written by from Marietta

I wish I could say this is a great drive. It's small, spacious, and generally works well. Until is doesn't, which is sadly not long after you start using it. If you bought this against the advice of the majority here who have given this device 1-star reviews... be forewarned.

    Interesting reviews

    • Written by from Montreal

I have had mine for over a year with no issues. That means little to the those who have problems with them. When I read reviews, I go by the amount of people who complain about one particular issue that seems to be a consistent. I do have to question the reviewer that mentions spinning parts and a screeching noise. As far as I am aware, this is a flash drive. Flash drives have no moving parts and could not make a noise. However, I know that Flash drives do degrade over time and do not give you a warning. 6 months is definitely not right though. I usually look at the length of the warranty to judge the manufacturers confidence in their product. As with a dishwasher, many things fail very close to the end of that warranty. I believe the warranty of the newer My Passports is 1 year.

    A year later... Dead

    • Written by from Ottawa

We bought this WD drive to back up our media files. It was a wonderful little thing when it worked right. Then suddenly almost a year to the day, it stops being recognized by my MacBook Air. Sometimes it shows up in Disk Utility but when I try to repair disk, it tells me "Live file system repair is not supported." I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC as suggested on some Mac forums, but nothing. The support desk at WD got me to update about four different things and still nothing. They were kind enough to send me a new USB cable to see if that would work. Nope. WD has offered to send me a replacement, but I don't care to replace a bad product with another bad product. I just want to get my data back!! Never buying another WD product again!

    Works Great then Dies

    • Written by from Centennial

I bought the thing 9 months ago and it worked great but about 2 weeks ago it began self-ejecting. Now it just won't work at all. If you plug it into the USB port the light on the drive goes on but nothing appears on the screen. I found a Mac forms page that let me know how to fix it using the Disk Utility and it worked once but not again after that and the Disk Utility can't fix it anymore. Its price is right but not if you have to by two to back up the original.

    Two months...

    • Written by from Calgary

Is all I got out of this thing before I had to call WD to get an RMA.

All my Time Machine Backups were on that drive plus a bunch of other data.

I do realize hard drives can fail soon soon after using them. However, the drive itself didn't fail. There is a known issue with these WD 2TB Passport drives with Macs and WD seems to be dragging their feet to fix it.

    Perfect travel companion

    • Written by from San Francisco

I travel a lot and find this little drive perfect for keeping all my data with me. I travel with 4 of the 2 TB drives. One is my Time Machine and the others contain all of my data files. Since I am ofter out of the country for months at a time and have poor internet connections this is perfect for me. When I get home I just synch the drives to the large hard drives I have there. Between that and some cloud storage I have never lost any data. I recommend these WD drives without reservation.

    Reliable & great portable drive

    • Written by from Tucson

I purchased 4 of these drives more than 1 year ago, using them several times a week for SuperDuper! backups, Time Machines backups and TV/Video storage and they each have worked flawlessly. No "spontaneous ejections", no corruption and no loss of data. I plan on buying 2 or 3 more this summer.

    Avoid buying this drive.

    • Written by from Jersey City

A 1 star review is to much for this very poorly made drive. Mine corrupted in a matter of 3 months without showing any previous signs of fault. I lost important work for a client and around 400GB or important files that was on a partition backup. Western Digital should offer people some kind of compensation but instead they have revamped their warranty to cover less time.

dodgy drives last thing you will want

    • Written by from London

This drive has major issues with drive 'self-ejecting', after which you get the message "This drive was not ejected properly". Latest firmware update claims it resolves the issue but it doesn't. There is plenty to read on the subject in Apple Support Communities and elsewhere - just google it up. (I only bought the drive because it was featured in Apple Store and I used that as a selection criterion: the only time the store has ever let me down.)

    Robust and Solid

    • Written by from Edmonton

I can't explain the other reviewers of this drive by my experience has been nothing but awesome.

I use this drive as my main media (iTunes) storage device for my MacBook Pro. The size lends itself to sit perfectly on the left side of my 15" MBP without coming close to the trackpad. It's lightweight and has quickly become one of my most valuable pieces of tech.

I have kids who have knocked and jostled this drive around... even dropped it on the floor. I nearly lost my mind but it is still intact to the writing of this review.

It's been totally solid for me.... for about a year. I recommend this product highly!
