  • How do I add more capacity to Apple TV???3 Macs and Apple TV/Time Machine and 1TB external - huge iTunes library.

Have a MacbookPro, Macbook and New 27" iMac all backed to Time Machine. I have Apple TV (160GB)but its nearly full!! MacBook Pro is additionally backed up to an external 1TB drive.
My iTunes library is extensive and spent about 3000pounds on it in 6 months!

1.Want to see if there is a way to add more disk drive storage to the Apple TV.
2.I cant work on my laptops as they are holding the iTunes libraries. Is there a way I can just leave the Music and Films on the Apple TV?
    3. Can I back up to the Time Machine wirelessly and use the rest of the Time Machine capacity to directly connect the Apple TV via Ethernet?

I had the same issue and set up the 2TB Time Capsule as a Media Server, freed up space on my comp and Apple TV, and it made such a difference.

-Copy what you want from your iTunes Media Folder and save it onto the Time Capsule drive, then delete the originals from iTunes.

-Open iTunes Preferences, click Advanced, and uncheck where is says "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when Adding to Library" Then drag the files (now stored on the Time Capsule's HD) back into iTunes.

-MAKE SURE to RE-Check the 'copy files...." in preferences when you are done so future purchases and downloads still get organized to the iTunes Media folder on your comp

-I still sync my favorite stuff my Apple TV, but as long as itunes is open on your computer, this lets you stream your entire library, and also frees up space on the Apple TV.

    Hope this helps!

  • Can I use 2 time capsules at once?

I have a 500GB time capsule that is full. I want to buy the 2tb one but would be glad to be able to use both for extra space. Does that work?

    Best Answer

Yes, you can connect multiple Time Capsules to the same network. If you will use Time Machine, you can't use both for backing up the same Mac, as you must choose one or the other.

  • Can Apple TV see movies on a Time Capsule without my computer on?

Will the Apple TV be able to see and play files on the TC directly? I don't mind storing my iTunes library on there. Simply, I have more movies than will fit on the Apple TV (syncing). The streaming works well, but my computer has to be awake/on.

    Best Answer

No. The software built into the AppleTV doesn't read remote HDDs it can only speak to remote iTunes. The Time Capsule is remote file sharing, not a remote media server.

  • can I use a USB wireless internet access on this device to connect the network

trying to figure out what this TC can do.

My internet access is via the USB wireless internet to telstra next g

can this be used at the TC to connet the whole network???

    Best Answer

No, The USB Port only supports sharing USB Hard Drives and USB Printers, not USB Modems. You can purchase 3G routers from various retailers that may support what you want to do.

  • Best Answer

Yes. Time Machine creates separate backup files for each of your computers. These files will simply expand over time until your drive is full. Alternatively, you may wish to partition the drive using Disk Utility to allocate a specific amount of space for all or each of your computers.

  • Can Time Capsule back up a shared hard drive?

I want to know if Time Capsule can backup a wireless external hard drive connected to an Airport Extreme on the same network?

    Best Answer

No, Time Machine cannot back up FROM any network drives.

  • What is the difference between the Time Capsule and an external hard drive? I want to store photos externally to free up space on my Mac.

I am wanting to free up space on my Mac to help it perform tasks faster. Since I have over 10,000 photos on my MacBook hard drive, it seems to be slowing down. I have a Time Capsule, but should I also get an external hard drive to store all photos? I guess I don't understand the difference between the two. I was thinking I could then delete the photos (if I had an external hard drive) on my MacBook Pro to free up more space. Is this logical?

    Best Answer

An external hard drive is usually connected to your Mac by either a Firewire or USB cable. This means that it can only be connected to one machine at a time, although the transfer rate is very good, so it will respond as quickly as your internal drive or possibly even faster.

A Time Capsule on the other hand is effectively a wireless router, with a built in hard drive. The hard drive acts like a network storage drive - so it is available to all of your computers on the network at any time, and because it's wireless there are no messy cables to plug in and it can be located anywhere. The downside is that because data is transferred wirelessly, if you have large amounts of data that you need to access very quickly, it will respond slower than an external drive connected directly.

I have around 10,000 photos in my iPhoto library that I access across the network. It works well, although there is a noticeable lag in performance, which an external hard drive would help overcome.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule as a back up external hard drive without a Time machine?

I have a Time Capsule, and I wish to back up all my documents onto it. Is it possible to do this or do I need a Time Machine also? Thanks

  • can I connect Time Capsule to Virgin router via wifi

I have an existing router connected to Virgin server, I want to connect Time Capsule to the router via wifi to access internet. Is this possible.

    Answer

Yes it is, I have the Virgin Media broadband 100MB package thats works just fine with my Time Capsule. You just connect the two with an Ethernet cable, run the config and away you go.

Config is pretty easy these days, for the Virgin modem select 'Connect Using' -> DHCP.

  • if i buy new time capsule, can i stream videos from there to my apple tv?

I'm talking of the apple tv 2010 and the newest time capsule as of today 2011. I know I could stream my mac to the apple tv, but this mac is running out of space and was thinking of getting a 2 TB time capsule to resolve my dilemma of continuing buying digital movies.

    Best Answer

No, this is not possible as of yet. You can place your iTunes song and movie library on time capsule and have it stream to your macbook or iPhone but it is not possible to stream with ATV2. An iTunes library requires iTunes to run and at the moment it can only be done through a computer, laptop, or iPhone.

  • can i use time capsule with sky m/router

i have to use sky equipment to connect to the internet .can i disable the wireless part and use time capsule for wireless how do set this up?

    Best Answer

You can use your time capsule in addition to your Sky router but not instead of it. SImply attach the time capsule with an ethernet cable and then use the setup utility to setup the time capsule as a wireless router for your house. You can then choose to either join the Sky router or the Apple router for your internet connection. Using the Time Capsule gives you access to faster N wireless speeds that most Sky routers don't use yet.

  • Answer

It depends on if you are wanting it to backup your CD's or replace them.

    1. To backup CD's is not what it is made for, but it can backup CD's imported into iTunes.
    2. To replace them and 'stream' music from it then Apple TV is needed, but again this is not what Time Capsule is made for.

To put music on it 'rip' (import) the files to your computer using iTunes. You can then do one of 3 things:
    1. Backup your machine using any backup software selecting the Time Capsule as the destination and the iTunes folder as the source
    2. Use Time Machine to backup your Mac to the Time Capsule
    3. Go into iTunes and put the root folder (Preferences / Advanced) onto the Time Capsule (note: to play any music on your computer you must be connected to the Time Capsule).

    Here is my setup:
Apple TV (1st gen) connected wirelessly to the TimeCapsule with my iTunes root folder on the TimeCapsule. When I open iTunes (on my Mac, although it could be on a PC) it syncs my media to the Apple TV. I can then play anything on the Apple TV and it streams around my house using 2 Airport Express boxes with speakers attached. I then use iDrive to backup everything online.

  • extend range

Just got a Time Capsule. Am serving up WiFi for a main building and a guest house, which are about 30 feet away from each other.

How Can I extend the range of the signal by using a separate 802.11n capable router? My intention is to use the second router to 'Join' the existing network, and there by extending the range

    Best Answer

No problem. I have extended the range using an Airport Express. This is a great option as it allow me to do 3 things as a consequence:-

    1. I can use the the Ethernet port on the airport express to connect up a printer away from all of my other equipment.
    2. I can use the audio in to connect iTunes a a set of remove speakers (I use a stereo CD radio with a line in connection)
    3. It extends the Range of the Wifi removing any weak spots in my 3 floor house.

  • Best Answer

Yes. Time Capsule is simpler to set up, but you can connect an external USB drive to an AE, format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled, and then use the Airport Utility to designate the disk as a shared disk under the Airport Utility. Make sure you use "Secure Shared Disks" with accounts and use strong passwords to protect each disk. Then login to the disk through your Finder (entering the user name and password that you created) and then go to the Time Machine settings. Time Machine will recognize the usb drive connected to the AE as a acceptable drive (blue), select it as your Time Machine backup drive and it will start. Make sure you have at least 3x as much space for your TM drive (500GB computer -> 1.5 TB Time Machine drive) so that Time Machine will have enough room to make incremental backups.

  • Best Answer

Yes, assuming that you mean Time Machine (and not Time Capsule), it supports NFS but with some work. There are quite some descriptions available that describe how to prepare a Linux server to do so, Google for "Time Machine nfs share". The key ingredient is to mount the disk holding the Time Machine backup with the "user_xattr" option (on the Linux server, not on the Mac).

However, if you're using an Linux server as a Time Machine backup disk, it is a lot easier to install the netatalk package and configure it to support Time Machine, just Google for "netatalk Time Machine". In that way your Linux server will speak the Mac native AFP protocol.

Now, if you meant "Does Time Capsule support NFS", the answer is no, unfortunately not. Time Capsule only supports the AFP and SMB/CIFS network disk protocols, not NFS.

  • Best Answer

Yes it does. I've connected the home hub with the time capsule with ethernet cable, then disabled the wireless signal coming from the hub. Time capsule has a better wifi than the BT Hub. When setting up the Capsule you must bridge the connection in one of the auto setup menus with the BT hub.

  • Can the time capsule be used with the Sonos music streaming system and if so how?

I have my music collection in ituunes on my iMac. I am thinking of buying a Sonos music system and wish to use it in connection with a 2TB time capsule acting as the always on server. I will transfer the itunes library to the TC. Is this possible and if so how.

    Best Answer

    Hi DM
A quick but incomplete answer is a clear "yes". We have the Sonos system in 6 rooms running the music off of a TC 2 GB with no problems at all. Only 2 issues is/was giving Sonos the right path to the TC due to the syntax. That took help from Sonos' efficient support. But after that it just works.
The only thing being a pain is the fact that iTunes keeps forgetting the path to the TC. this means that everything we buy from via iTunes need to be transferred to the TC manually (that was actually what I came in here to look for a solution for...).

So I can warmly recommend the combination.

    Hi,

The Time Capsule is designed only to be mounted horizontally. As such, the antennae are multi-directional and integrated in the device, meaning it provides the same signal in all directions. If you still have signal issues, then more realistic solutions such as purchasing Airport Express base stations to extend the range of the network produced by the time capsule would be better in the long term.
