What is the average power consumption of the Thunderbolt display when hooked up to a new 85W MacBook Pro 15"?
I'm off-grid so this really matters. I'm gutted Apple have discontinued the 17" MacBook Pro because that extra screen real estate makes an enormous amount of difference. A desktop is much too power hungry for my situation, but if the Thunderbolt display is reasonable then this setup becomes a potential (if far more expensive) replacement option.

Is there a different cable for the mac mini or one that is in the box thunderbolt display works for all mac
- Asked by Alexandre D from Quebec
- 22-Dec-2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerThe cable attached to the display is the connection that plugs into any Mac with a Thunderbolt port. The cable also has a MagSafe connector that will charge any Thunderbolt equipped Mac laptop.
The Thunderbolt Display becomes a hub for all other connections to any Thunderbolt equipped Mac. USB 2.0, FireWire 800, Ethernet, camera, microphone, and sound system, as well as additional Thunderbolt port all feed the Mac through the single Thunderbolt Connection… no adapters required.
One exception would be newer Macs that have USB 3.0 ports would need to have high speed USB 3.0 devices connected directly to the Mac to achieve full 3.0 speed. The USB ports on the display are currently limited to USB 2.0 speeds.- Answered by James H from Portland

can an older macbook pro be upgraded to use thunderbolt
- Asked by Leroy R G from Fredericksberg
- 21-May-2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerUnfortunately, due to the thunderbolt port being the only way to accommodate the large amount of extra ports (3 USB 2.0, Firewire 800, gigabit ethernet) the only macbook pros that can run this display are the models that have the thunderbolt port. If you have an older model macbook pro, you can use the LED Cinema display. It's identical to the thunderbolt display minus the thunderbolt port and extra ports.

what cable do I use to connect the display to a MBP?
- Asked by Martha B from Fairfax
- 21-Nov-2012
- Flag as inappropriate
AnswerThere is an integrated cable that comes out from the back of the Thunderbolt Display. At the end of the cable it splits into two cables -- one that connects to the power port of your MBP, and the other that connects to the Thunderbolt (formerly MiniDV) port of your MBP. Your MBP must be late 2011 or later (I think) in order to have the proper Thunderbolt port necessary for using a Thunderbolt Display.

Can i connect a macbook pro equipped with Thunderbolt to an old ADC cinema display? if so, How?
I'm in the market for a new macbook pro, but i can't seem to find any definite information as to whether or not i can use my old cinema display (using ADC). I know there is an ADC-DVI converter, and a Thunderbolt-DVI converter. Is it possible to simply buy both and use the old display?
- Asked by Nolan C from Binghamton

Best AnswerThe answer is yes. Once the ADC-DVI converter is in place it is, effectively, a DVI plug. After that using the Thunderbolt to DVI converter is what you need.

does the thunderbolt have the same glare issues as the standard 27" display?
I mainly use my MacbookPro for fine PS adjustments of photographic images. Glare is a deal breaker for this otherwise fabulous well priced monitor.
- Asked by Morris C from Austin
- 24-May-2012
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerYes, it does. I do not believe that Apple makes an anti-glare screen version of the Thunderbolt Display. I have my TBD positioned on my desk to face away from most of my light sources and do not notice the glare that much. It is a great display though. You may be able to find some sort of screen cover that reduces or eliminates the glare issues but I haven't looked into it. Hope this helps.
