Best Answer
No. I've spent the past two days looking for a solution. I expected my ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card to drive video to my new Thunderbolt Display though the mini Display Port connector. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Very frustrated.

When connected to the Cinema Display via my MacBook Pro. Can I close the lid of my MacBook Pro?
I am thinking of buying the new Cinema Display in 2 weeks when it's pay day. But if I connect to the Cinema Display via my MacBook pro. Can I close the lid of my MacBook Pro and still use it via the Cinema Display. Otherwise I would have 2 monitors open. And that's a lot of light!?

You most definitely can. You can set any external monitor to be the primary and only monitor for your MacBook Pro. Once it is connected via Mini DisplayPort and properly configured, you must close the lid and do one of three things:
1. Click a paired bluetooth mouse such as the Magic Mouse to wake it.
2. Stroke a key on a paired bluetooth keyboard to wake it.
3. Open and close the lid in one motion.
I'm always traveling, using bigger external monitors as my only display. I'll just hook it up, open and close the lid, and the screen will properly activate.
Hope that helps, friend.- Answered by Satchell D from Teaneck

This looks great! Does this work with PCs?

Best Answer
This does work fine with a PC. You must either use a converter adaptor (over $100) or use one of the few PC cards with a mini displayport like the ATI 5970. Also, depending on your hardware some people have trouble getting boot camp to install into windows properly on a PC. You must use boot camp to control the brightness on this monitor, or hook it to a mac and set the brightness first. The monitor will remember whatever the last brightness setting was used if you use the mac option. Also, be aware the brightness, sound, and isight camera all utilize the usb port. I should also mention, the isight camera and sound work fine on my pc.

MacBookPro5,5 : does its Mini Display Port send audio signal also ? (if it sends only video signal I will not buy this monitor)
I have just gone to an Apple Store to check this product before purchase and they told me that only latest Mini Display Ports support audio signal.
I bought my MacBook Pro in November 2009, model description says it's a MacBookPro5,5 ...
Anyone can shed a light on this issue ?
I'd rather avoid paying £900 for this monitor and then not being able to enjoy my DVDs ....
thanks a lot

No, the 2009 MacBook Pros (MacBook Pro 5,3 or 5,5) are not supported the audio over mini-DisplayPort feature. Only the 2010 MacBook Pros (MacBook Pro 6,2 and 7,1) or newer are supported the audio over mini-DisplayPort feature.

Does the Display have HDMI input/output connection?
Since I am fully integrated with the Internet I would like to know if the display panel have an HDMI input/output. This would make the display a viable solution for integrating my video systems with this display.

It seems like there are many answers to this question and questions like it that refer to the MDP to HDMI adapters currently available on the market. Unless my thinking is faulty, these adapters WILL NOT provide the solution you are looking for.
The MDP to HDMI adapters are designed to allow Macs with MDP's to connect to an HDMI input on an HDTV. They have a male MDP plug and a female HMDI port.
In order for to use an adapter for this kind of solution, it would have to have a *female* MPD input, as the Cinema Display has a male MDP plug which would need to plug into it.
After an exhaustive search, I could turn up no adapters equipped with a female MDP port and female or male HDMI. So currently, adapting is not the solution to this problem.- Answered by Michael H from Summerville

Yes you can use the monitor with the macbook closed provided you have an external mouse / keyboard. You can wake a macbook from sleep whilst it is closed but you cannot power it on from a full shutdown without using the power button next to the macbook's keyboard.

I want to connect my xbox 360 via hdmi to mini display port to the display is this possible?

Answer
You are going to need a video scaler and HDMI to MDP converter for that. For example, Atlona AT-HD620 can provide this functionality perfectly (same for PS3, Blu-Ray player, etc.), but it comes with a hefty price tag.

Can it work with a New Apple TV?
- Asked by Nati N from Aranyaprathet
- 17-Sep-2010

Best Answer
No - the new Apple TV (and old Apple TV, for that matter) only support HDMI output - and this only supports Mini Displayport input. There are options to use a third party video format converter, but it'll likely cost $200+, so I suggest just buying another vendor's 27 inch display with HDMI input if that is your aim.

You might remember this last year we had the same problem with mini display-port, The 06, 07, 08 Mac Pro's where not compatible with the 27-inch LED Cinema Display but then bare feats did a test with a 5870 on a 2008 Mac Pro and it worked and once everyone saw that worked users with 06, 07 08 Mac Pro's starting to upgrade to 5770 or 5870 and using the 27-inch LED with late model mac's I think we just need to wait for 2011 Mac Pro TB GPU upgrade kit becomes available and then it might work with 06, 07, 08, 09 10 Mac Pro's only time will tell once Apple release the TB upgrade kit but as of right now your 2010 Mac Pro will not work I know because I have the TB display and it does not come on but the TB connects on the 5870 with no problem

27 Cinema Display mini display port will work with older Macs with mini display port only output. They will also work with thunderbolt Macs (as the last device in chain).
27 Cinema Display thunderbolt version will only work work when plugged into a thunderbolt port in the newer Macs.
So , if you have a new Mac with thunderbolt port , get either version.
If you have a Mac without thunderbolt port, get the old mini display port version.- Answered by Sinan K from Seattle

will apple 27"display monitor rotate from landscape to portrait

Best Answer
Hi, yes in a sense it will.
You can go into system preferences, displays and in the Display button, there is an option to select to Rotation. This will allow you to rotate the output of the screen to different angles, including a portrait if you select 90 degrees.
Otherwise, the display itself is fixed in landscape orientation physically.

No direct cable connection, but I'm sure you can look at ElGato products for that. As for allowing the use of the built in camera (or any other webcam) I use something called EVOcam. It allows you to remotely view your webcam and I believe you can save logs and images for archiving and you should be able to set it up for motion detect as well. Hope that helps.

Is the Apple LED Cinema Display {27'' flat panel a touch screen monitor?
the question i had asked is very civilized

Sorry … No.
Apple feels the vertical orientation of the
screen does not lend itself well to the touch
interface.
This might change in the future but this model will not
be upgradable to touch capability.

Reasons to get this display instead of another (cheaper) brand to pair with Macbook Pro (to answer IT purchasers in my org).
I would like to get the 27" cinema display to pair with a new macbook pro that will double as my desktop and mobile computer. I am being asked why my org should spend so much more for a display when there are other monitors available. I have a couple of reasons (easy connection, recharge as soon as it's connected instead of using sep cord, Thunderbolt), but it comes down to preferring Apple/Apple products and using things that were designed to go together, which my IT manager completely rejects.
Can you give me more powerful arguments?- Asked by Kathryn C from Baton Rouge

There aren't other monitors available in this category (27" IPS) which are cheaper. 24" IPS monitors at 1920x1080p are now much less expensive, but this apple is the cheapest of the higher resolution, larger size. If you want 27" and high res, this is plainly the best option available. The fact that it pairs seamlessly with your computer is an added bonus.

Will this Apple LED Cinema Display function as a display if placed as the terminal device along a Thunderbolt daisy chain?
i.e. if I currently own a 24" or 27" LED Cinema Display connected via MDP, and this fall obtain an Apple Thunderbolt Display and connect it to a Thunderbolt-compatible Mac, can the older model still be used? Or do both external monitors have to be the Thunderbolt model?
