Time Machine can be used through any external hard drive, not just Time Capsule.

  • No, Time Machine is compatible with any type of hard drive. You can even make a partition on your Mac only if you don't have any other partition and use that for Time Machine backups. I did that before, but I needed a partition to add Windows on my Mac. It still works perfectly and it's worth a try. From what I've heard, Time Capsules have a short life span. Stick with your Airport Extreme ( I also have it and it works perfectly ). You should at least try the partition way.
