How does iWork compare to Microsoft Office

Is it really worth the $71 for iWork when the basics (Word,Excel,ect) are already on your computer? I'm buying a Macbook Pro and was wondering if the extra program would really help me much. The price is going to come out close to 2 grand. If I'm going to fork that over another $71 isn't going to seem much if the program is really worth getting.
