Does the remote control works in iphone 3gs?

I have an iPhone 3GS and I can popup the volume neither popdown ...
I see that 3GS is supported for this earphones but no luck. Is it needed to do anything special?

    After googling for other people who have experienced this problem, I found the answer that applied for me: there was pocket lint that had been stuffed down the headphone jack. A paperclip and lots of patience later, I had extracted the lint and now the mic and remote work as advertised.
