There might be but it doesn't stay on, whether opened or closed the screen does not stick very well. I returned it because of that.

As in the old smart case there are magnets in the front cover, so when it's folded, the cover sticks to it self to provide the triangle shape for the stand, hope this helps

The magnets in the iPad enclosure hold the front in place.

Hi Geoff, there are no magnets holding the back cover in place, the iPad just fits snuggly inside, similar to the bumper for the iPhone 4/4S. It fits tightly and doesn't move around, nice unit.

It will hold lightly, but it could be stronger for my liking. Bottom-line - not really what you're probably hoping for.

Just returning my smart case now - it does not have have a magnet on the back - it tries to magnetise with the ipad through the casing - but cannot hold it's own weight.
Also, when the cover is closed (against the front of the ipad, it does not stay closed when tilted.

Just picked one up tonight at the Apple Store and no it doesn't. I'm giving it a couple days and it may go back. It's nice but I don't see it replacing my Smart Cover and a back snap on shell with a magnet I have from Speck.

No, it doesn't have sufficient magnetization to keep it secured to the back. When compared to the smart cover, it is much easier to manage when folded over the back because the hinge doesn't move. It's much better than the smart cover.
Hope that makes sense.- Answered by Dirt M from Dollars Des Ormeaux

Of course because if there weren't magnets then the cover wouldn't trigger the iPad to shut off automatically. You see the magnets are multipurpose meaning they not only hold the smart cover in place but they are also the reason it turns the iPad on and off

since it says its aluminum, my best guess is that its the same thin sheet of aluminum thats in the back of the iPad 2/3. if thats the case then yeah there should be a very small magnet just how your smart cover weakly sticks to the back of the iPad, it should do the same to this too

There is no magnet on the back cover. The only magnet is to hold up the front cover when folded into itself.
