Does this adapter when paired with the 3rd gen iPad also handle audio over the HDMI cable?
Is this a full audio/video solution or for audio out will I need to use the headphone jack?

Yes, this adapter handles both audio and video. In fact, the headphone jack is disabled when using hdmi. The only other option for sound when using the hdmi cable is to sync the iPad to a bluetooth speaker.

Yes. It is a full audio/video connector. Do not forget the HDMI extension cable.
