Can I buy additional batteries w/o having to buy the charger?

No you can't. Some other brands of a similar size will work, eg Sanyo Eneloop 2000mAh work fine. Funny thing though, buying six Eneloop batteries will cost almost the same as buying another charger with six batteries from Apple!

Yes, but not as apple batteries.

The batteries used by Apple are rebraned Sanya Eneloop batteries. Google them they are one of the most efficient batteries currently on the market.
