no you do not need access to a computer to charge your ipod. you could use the apple USB power adapter and charge your ipod that way

as far as i can see when i charge my ipod, because i don´t have a different system of recharging, i need to start my computer in order to do that. is necesary to run the computer to have energy on my usb ports. i own a mac, could be different in a pc.
