Since OS X was introduced, Apple has given a codename for each version of the Mac's operating system.

The operating system and the associated codename are as follows (each codename followed by the date released):

    OS 10 (Beta) = "Kodiak" (September 13, 2000)
    OS 10.0 = "Cheetah" (March 24, 2001)
    OS 10.1 = "Puma" (September 25, 2001)
    OS 10.2 = "Jaguar" (August 23, 2002)
    OS 10.3 = "Panther" (October 24, 2003)
    OS 10.4 = "Tiger" (April 29, 2005)
    OS 10.5 = "Leopard" (October 26, 2007)
    OS 10.6 = "Snow Leopard" (August 29, 2009)
    OS 10.7 = "Lion" (July 20, 2011)
    OS 10.8 = "Mountain Lion" (July 25, 2012)
    OS 10.9 = "Mavericks" (Oct 22, 2013)

Each version above is a major change in the Operating System. Thus the Mac's OS 10.4, OS 10.5, OS 10.6, OS 10.7, etc. is comparable to the major changes in the Windows operating systems, for example: Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.
