Ipad+mac mini or mac book pro?

So I'm going to be a college freshman next year and I am trying to decide between getting an Ipad and Mac MIni or getting a Mac book pro. (I have a monitor that I could use for the mac mini already.) I like the idea of having a mac mini in my room for typing out papers and such as well as having the ipad in class for taking notes, but are there any problems that I may run into with that combination? and if so is a mac book pro better for me?
I am not a gamer so thats not a factor and I will mostly be using it for a decent sized music library, writing papers, as well as making a few presentations, and the rest of the time just messing around and browsing the web watching videos and stuff.
