Product Information

  • Overview

Nest Protect: Smoke + Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm and its companion app on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch make safety easy - and decidedly less annoying. Nest Protect speaks up to tell you what the problem is and where it is. It will even message your iPhone when the alarm goes off or the batteries run low. And you can check on things at any time with the Nest app.

Nest Protect can also see the carbon monoxide you can't. Or if there's only a little smoke from just burning the toast, it gives you a friendly heads-up. It also gives you peace of mind by testing itself constantly and showing you everything's working with a quick green glow when you turn off the lights.

I regret having to write this review because we 'jumped' on the Nest bandwagon thinking basically "how could such a great company I regret having to write this review because we 'jumped' on the Nest bandwagon thinking basically "how could such a great company get it wrong?". Frankly, WE were wrong. We bought 14 Nest Protects to replace our nearly 8 year old non-net smoke alarms. Installation is fairly easy but I can understand for some it might be frustrating to link newly bought units to existing ones. However we did so. The units will announce in what room there is a potential problem if they 'go off'. However this will only happen if the room is a room that Nest has in their list. If you have a say "baby nursery", the nest has no such entry so the nest will only say the unit is located "upstairs or downstairs" if you want it to. The Nest can be linked together so that if one goes off anywhere in your home then ALL the others will go off to alert all areas of the home of a fire potential. THIS is GREAT but this can be A BIG PROBLEM. It was for us. Thinking that these units would be well balanced in their detection systems we installed and linked all units together. The first problem occurred luckily in the daytime. One of the alarms produced a "false alarm" reporting smoke. There was none, and then of course all the other units began to repeat this fire waring. It was a big scare to two newborns. You can't really explain this to a child of that age. Luckily we were able to stop the units and they returned to normal. However, perhaps 2 weeks after than the same thing happened. There was NO way to silence the alarm even my pushing the button. ALL ALARMS kept going off and would not stop. We called Customer service and finally had to leave it in the hands of our neighbor who was kind enough to help as we were walking out the door so we did not miss our flight. It really was a mess. We have had three false alarms, one this last week that do not seem to be related in anyway to what is going on in the house. Also, many know now, the much publicized feature of simply waving your hands to stop the alarm has been removed as a feature by Nest due to safety concerns. The 'night light' on the Nest's is only helpful if you are in a pitch dark room and even then the light is so low you will need to wait a few moments for your eyes to adjust so you can hopefully get some help. Also being a square unit as opposed to a circular unit means you have four corners to line up to existing woodwork in your home --- might sound easy but is not. Rounded designs would have produced no such problems. Unlike our home Nest Thermostats we have no had any disconnection problems. Our Nest Thermostats disconnect almost every few hours and remain disconnected until we manually restore them. I was contacted by Nest who said they needed me to be part of a test group as this kind of thing was happening to others. I gladly agreed took copious notes and RARELY heard back (if ever) from those who had requested these … whats worse if the connection problems did not stop. We stopped using the Nest Thermostats so we now have 9 paperweights and are thankful that this has not happened with the smoke alarms.

They have been functioning for two months without issue even through a couple power failures. Very easy install/replace previous SDs. Aesthetically pleasing. Be Warned: If you want your network to remain "hidden" as I did, Nest Protect will not work. You have to untoggle the "hide network" in your network's security settings which will allow the Protect to find and link in to your router. I falsely assumed that since the Nest Thermo functions on hidden networks, the Nest Protect would also. Not the case. Otherwise, easy to read/control w/app and iPhone. So other other than the router issue I have nothing critical to say.

I installed 3 units and did not have one issue. We had one alarm set off with a smokey stove which corrected itself after seconds. I can't help to be suspicious of the poor reviews with comments like, "they should be round for ease of installing square". Really, you don't have a $2 square which I didn't use and successfully installed. I bought both the hard wired & battery for two homes and they installed perfectly!

A smoke detector has a usefull life of 5-10 years. The cells for CO has a usefull life of 2-3 years. This means that this product may have to replaced earlier than because the CO function has expired.

The manufacteur may have designed this product so the CO cell can be replaced by the home owner. I would be interesting to hear what the manufacteur has to say about this.
