    About Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

I took the device to local Apple store and it would not power up on any of the Mac systems in the store including the iMac. It would only power up when connected via the Belkin Thunderbolt Hub. Not very portable.

It is easily the fastest portable drive I own and I've gone through quite a bit. It also outperformed the OWC FireWire 800 RAID desktop drive that I was previously using with Final Cut Pro X. I do have concerns about durability. This thing is heavy so it will jostle around in your bag or backpack. I've lost the WD emblem since it is stuck on with an adhesive instead of screen printed like the rest of the markings. One of the rubber feet also fell off making the drive unstable on a flat surface but luckily I found that in my bag and reapplied it. Great drive and I'd highly recommend it if you need portable performance.
