    About Thunderbolt 2

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

With Thunderbolt 2 now built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect up to three 4K displays at once. Thunderbolt 2 gives you up to 20 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

Called support once (to see if unit can be laid on it's side - the answer is yes, it can) and they responded quickly.

This is my first purchase of a Pegasus RAID, which isn't quite as full featured as their server class equipment, but it saves a ton of money since it uses Thunderbolt and forgoes the need for an expensive fiber-channel card.

The one missing star is because this RAID only supports a very limited number of hard drives and those drives are fairly low-rated for reliability. For example, if you need to replace a 2TB drive, the only officially supported option is the Toshiba DT01ACA200. Check out the reviews on Newegg and you'll see why it makes me nervous.

The only other options would be a 3TB or 4TB Seagate drive (ST3000DM001 and ST4000DM000 respectively). The former is also poorly rated and the latter is a waste of money and capacity, considering it will only use 2TB when added to your existing level 5 RAID.

And what happens when these drives go EOL? Hopefully Promise will provide some more options, but this is an expensive purchase to base on hope.

Overall, performance has been pretty good, but it's hard to wholeheartedly recommend a RAID with such limited drive support.
