Although it is a little pricey, the sound it produces can easily sooth your “Empty Wallet Blues.” I am an audio engineer/audiophile and had been looking for a good portable airplay capable speaker and love the airplay and "PlayDirect" features. When airplay first emerged, I was skeptical of the quality of sound it'd produce, but am a skeptic no more. Also as an audio nerd, I measured the frequency response, and was impressed to find that for the most part it was a pretty flat response (except for the expected boost in the lows). The application they designed for the speaker also allows the user to set the speaker to different preset modes like "Shelf" mode where you can set the speaker to stop playing in its default 360 degree mode. All in all, the speaker has tickled all of my audio nerd fantasies, hi-fi wireless sound quality, sleek and small look with a big sound, and audio controls for the speaker. I would and will purchase more Libratone speakers, and so should you.

However, I decided to give the Libratone Zipp a try after being disappointed by the sound of a few smaller bluetooth models. I'll keep this simple - it's beautiful, portable and sounds amazing. It produces much larger sound than it's size indicates. I read review after review after review and then decided to just try it out for myself. Amazing. Yes, there are bugs in the Airplay technology that need to be addressed. I'm not sure if it's the iPhone5 or the speaker itself which drops the signal. At any rate it's not that big of a deal - with the push of a button the connection is back. Be very alert when you read the reviews put out by some of the big tech websites. Some of them gave the Zipp a horrible review - and then gave glorious reviews to other speakers. But guess who the major advertisers on their website were........

  • Libratone expensive but impressive

Look it's not cheap, but it does everything pretty well, portable speaker, airplay speaker, laptop speaker all in one.

The 1s Look it's not cheap, but it does everything pretty well, portable speaker, airplay speaker, laptop speaker all in one.

The 1st one I got from the apple store wouldn't stay on the wifi network and dropped off every few minutes and had a really bad delay in sound when using it as an airplay speaker so took it back the next day and this one has worked perfectly.

Great sound, easy set up, and multiple connection methods including cable, airplay via wifi and direct connect airplay.

Sound is pretty good for a portable, nice bass and not the tinny noise you expect from other portable models. Only issues are it is not quite loud enough (I like to play it LOUD) and if you have wifi fluctuation it obviously causes drop outs.

It is a little larger than you'd probably expect but it is portable and not a pain to lug around.

    AND it looks awesome!

Just got mine in the mail yesterday! Overall I'm impressed

    Cons:

    Cons:

    - When I tipped the speaker on its side, there was a loose/detached component inside the speaker that was rattling but I'm not sure what it is (doesn't seem to affect the overall function... so far).
    - Taking into consideration the quality of product materials vs. retail price, the speaker is on the pricey side
    - Airplay took forever to set up for some reasons (the Airplay logo wouldn't show up due to recent iOS 7.1 update)
    - Libratone app requires iOS 6.0 or later

    Pros:

    - Amazing surround sound that will be sure to give you goosebumps :)
    - Portable / wireless
    - Sound can be adjusted according to where you place the speakers (Outdoor, Shelf, Table, or Floor)

Long ago, I was an audiophile. I had expensive (and large) separate components. I bought them from one of those weird local stores Long ago, I was an audiophile. I had expensive (and large) separate components. I bought them from one of those weird local stores that sold british equipment. Over time, family and work became more important. I didn't have the time or space to care, and sold everything off.

But my children love music, so I've been trying to find an audio system that I can live with. For the past few weeks, I've been playing with different wireless speakers.

The Libratone Zipp is, by far, the best device I've tried. It isn't the cheapest, nor does it have the most reliable connection (due to Apple's AirPlay technology). But it does three things exceptionally well.

First, it sounds great. I don't mean "great" as in "loud and bassy" (though it is plenty loud and provides plenty of bass for its size). I mean that it's very balanced and it lets you hear details. The Libratone makes you want to listen to more music.

Secondly, it integrates beautifully with your Apple devices (laptop, phone, iPad, etc). You can play music using whatever service (or app) you want: iTunes, Rdio, Spotify, etc. Unlike some other products that force you to use their player, you can use whatever player you want.

Third, it's unobtrusive and pretty. This system takes up a very small amount of space and doesn't stick out.

Take it with me to different locations, connect it to networks as an airplay speaker and use PlayDirect too. No problems, sounds great. Until yesterday the unit froze up on me. No buttons I could push would help. It was locked up good.

I examined the unit and found out the top button was stuck. I bought a $10 torque drive to open up the unit but found out after I opened it up that the top is held on by adhesive. I gently pulled back the top. Re-aligned the switch and my unit is working fine again. Now I know how to fix it when it breaks again. I expect it to break again its a cheap button.

Good thing I am technically inclined or the speaker would have been in a landfill.

Come on guys... a $400 speaker system with a $0.05 button???
