Great Design. Great Performance.

Besides I got tired of managing multip I've got tons of files, photos and video and I've been running low on storage space lately. Besides I got tired of managing multiple backup drives, so I've opted for this 3TB baby. It's quite heavy due to the thick aluminum enclosure. The design and the build quality are awesome. Transfer speeds are great. I also love that there is a data encryption option, which gives me peace of mind knowing that even if I leave the drive behind somewhere the information contained cannot be accessed and is totally secure. …

It was plug-and-play for me and so far I haven't had any issues with it. The backups are faultless with Time Machine and I don't have to worry about my data security, since it can be encrypted with this drive, nor about running out of space - 3TB is an enormous amount of storage capacity to safely save all my files, music, video and photos.. …

Good Drive with Minor Installation Issues
I have been happy with the performance of this drive since setting it up to back up three separate Macs on my home network. Using I have been happy with the performance of this drive since setting it up to back up three separate Macs on my home network. Using an Airport Extreme, I now have a great piece of redundancy in place. Setup was a bit annoying as I needed to first plug the drive into a computer and could not setup over my network. This may be the case for any drive you plug into an Airport Extreme, but I feel like the LaCie software was the cause. Additionally, the LaCie installation software wouldn't fully install and allow me to register. This, of course, does not affect the performance of the drive which is extremely quiet--no sign of the mating of modem cacophony mentioned in a few reviews. None of the issues are dealbreakers since I don't really need the additional features offered, but you may run into issues if you are buying specifically for the additional software. …

Ok hard drive, some big bugs that need fixing.
Storage and speed isn't an issue. Though I wish there was a Thunderbolt 2 port on it, I'm fine with USB 3. What I don't like is ho Storage and speed isn't an issue. Though I wish there was a Thunderbolt 2 port on it, I'm fine with USB 3. What I don't like is how noisy it can get (It sounds like two 56k modems are mating) and there's this weird bug where when it stays inactive for a little while it then kicks on with that same horrid noise, then locks up the computer for 10 seconds. …

It will only be usable by whichever computer connected to it first, the other computer will be ignored. However, if you set up the first computer as a server you can access the same drive from multiple computers. Connect the hard drive to a Mac and go to your system preferences. Under "Sharing" in the Internet and Wireless row. In the first box (Shared Folders:" click the plus at the bottom left and select the hard drive you want to share. When you have selected it, you can click on the hard drive in the System Preferences window to change your privacy settings by setting Users who can access it. If you are setting it up at home I'd set Everyone to Read & Write. On the second Mac, open a Finder window and click "Go" then "Connect to Server" then, in the window that appears, "Browse". Click on the Mac the hard drive is connected to and you should be able to access it as if the hard drive were plugged into the second Mac.
It will work over Wi-Fi, but you really should have your Mac's connected by an Ethernet cable. It is MUCH faster and more reliable and the cables are very inexpensive. …

I currently am doing that with my 2008 iMac, storing all my media on an external hard drive. I've got all my iTunes and Aperture data on an external drive and the iMac locates all the info and works just fine. I've then set my Time Machine to backup the external drive in addition to my internal iMac drive. My goal was the same as yours, to reduce the amount of space on my internal 1T iMac disc. It all works perfectly! You can find directions on how to set this up online - sorry I don't recall offhand exactly where I got the directions to do this.
