Warning: it doesn't always "just work"

    • Written by from Los angeles

I tried to use this to hook my new Apple TV up to a good Toshiba projector. The projector supports many resolutions and works fine with my MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone (via the relevant adapters). After many hours of trying, I could not get the Kanex ATV Pro to output anything on my projector.

So, be warned. Keep the packaging so you can return this if it does not work with your projector.

Also, as a side note: you will only be able to use this for AirPlay mirroring, you won't be able to watch any movies you rent on the Apple TV via iTunes on the big screen due to HDCP copy protection.

    Not meant for durability

    • Written by from Highlands Ranch

Bought 2 of these and they are both dead after a year. First the Audio port fails because the connection fail to engage any longer internally which really causes the product to be useless at that point. Then eventually the picture no longer worked as well on one of them. Very poor quality.

    Excellent Performance

The converter cable works just as it promises! It converts your HDMI signal coming from your Apple TV into two separate feeds, your VGA and Audio. I have my VGA cable plugged into the adapter and into my projector. I also have an audio cable plugged into the adapter and into the classroom amp system. Works like a charm and allows me to teach without requesting a new HDMI compatible projector (which would take a year or more to actually get).
It converts the image to the same quality that is being transmitted from the Apple TV up to the top quality allowed through the projector. I love the cable, but of course it's really the Apple TV that's so great. The converter just allows me to use the Apple TV with my projector.

Good for video bad for audio on projector

    • Written by from Kent Town

I bought this on the recommendation of an apple genius to connect video to projector and sound to amp.
Nice idea but our projector has no sound input (which would be poor quality anyway) and airplay cant split video/sound to amp.
Unless you like silent movies it doesn't do the job.

    Not for long VGA cables!

    • Written by from Bryan

I can't find any details on Kanex's website regarding the maximum length VGA cable that the ATV Pro can handle, but it's definitely limited. It won't push a VGA signal as far as a standard laptop video card. I'd say if your VGA cable is longer than about ten feet, you might run into odd video flashing issues.

    Requires Powered HDMI port

    • Written by from Eagle

FYI - This device will not work on retina Macbook Pros or the new Mac Minis. It requires a powered HDMI port which are not available on those machines. Save yourself the time if you are trying to connect a Mini or MB pro retina.

    Horrible for AirPlay

    • Written by from Citrus Heights

This device downgrades the image coming from the ATV to the converter, which is fine it has to downgrade the signal in order to project it on your old VGA display. However, when you AirPlay your device to the ATV the ATV does it's own downgrade on the signal coming from your iOS device, which it also has to do that since the resolution of the ATV is higher than the iOS device you are AirPlaying.

With that being said when you AirPlay through this converter the ATV downgrades the image, than the Kanex downgrades the image and on your projector screen is a tiny iOS/AirPlay image. It is unusable in a classroom or any business situation.

If you need this converter just to use the ATV for watching movies and ATV services, than it is fine.

If you need this converter specifically for AirPlay, look elsewhere. It is absolutely unusable for AirPlay.

    Great Product!

    • Written by from Wichita

I am using this to hook my Apple TV to my older style VGA Projector and it works great. Video quality looks as good as can be expected for VGA. I am only using it for the video, I have the audio running directly from the Apple TV to my surround sound receiver using the optical port.

Useful but analog audio output needs some work...

    • Written by from Bethlehem

I purchased this device in order to use Apple TV with my older Pioneer plasma which only has component video or VGA. It works fantastic! My only complaint is that the quality of analog audio output on the unit is substandard.

I use the optical output from my home theater system and it sounds great. However, I use the analog output on the unit for listening to music on my high-end standalone stereo speakers and it makes my speakers sound subdued. I still kept the unit because to keeps me from shaking walls and my neighbors happy when I'm playing music.

If the digital audio is all you need then it's five stars for this product. Otherwise, it only has to works and therefore I give it three.

Not working after the iOS 7 update.

    • Written by from Newhall

My coworker and I both use this product with the Apple TV to project our iPads for our classroom. Suddenly a day or two after the iOS 7 update came out, both of us started getting static! I took the Apple TV home to update it, and it works perfectly when it's plugged in straight to HDMI. I've also tried replacing my VGA cable twice, and nothing seems to help. This is such a useful and convenient tool for teachers when it's working.... PLEASE FIX THIS!

Works great with non HDMI plasma screen

    • Written by from London

I bought the Kanex ATV Pro to use with a 10 year old Panasonic TV plasma screen with an Apple TV 3rd gen. I wanted to stream video/music/photos and use mirroring with my late 2009 MacBook, which in Apple speak is Airplay and Airplay Mirroring.

The plasma screen does not have a HDMI input (which the Apple TV needs) but does have a VGA input. You will need a VGA cable to plug into the Kanex and the other end to your screen.
You will also need a 3.5mm jack lead (the same as most headphone ends) to be able to get sound from Apple TV. The volume can then be controlled via the speaker you attach to the Kanex or via your computer/ iPhone/iPod. Please note that I didn't get volume control using a simple bluetooth speaker but when I connected to a slightly more sohphisticated portable
    speaker, it worked.

I have a late 2009 MacBook and Mountain Lion. I could get videos/music/photos to play from iPhone 4 and also from my MacBook as long as the videos were already in iTunes. You will not
be able to play .AVI .MKV .FLV etc videos from your MacBook without using third party
software. The good news is there is a great app called Beamer that works seamlessly to allow
you to play other video formats.

As far as I understand Airplay MIrroring will not work with a pre 2011 Macbook and anything else less than Mountain Lion. Again there is a great app called AirParrot which allows you to do this on a pre 2011 MacBook. This will allow you to mirror exactly what is on your computer screen to your TV screen or monitor.

In conclusion, the Kanex adaptor works well to be able to stream media from (in my case) an iPhone 4 and late 2009 MacBook via an Apple TV linked to the Kanex linked to VGA input of plasma TV screen.

Allows for use of VGA projectors with iPads

Excellent piece of kit. Very simple to set up and allows Apple TV to be used with VGA projectors in school. Also quick and simple to fit. So impressive in fact the school is planning to buy one for every classroom.

    incompatible cable with powerbook

    • Written by from Makawao

This cable is recommended for connecting an Epson projector with a vga port to a power book, in What Cable Do You Need on the Store website. The computer doesn't recognize it nor does the projector. After 60 plus dollars, how many cables do I need in order to connect various computers, Ipads to my projector which is two years old? And is it really that difficult to find the correct one?

    For what it is . . . . .

    • Written by from Teton

The device works to a degree. It does not recognize HDCP and thus is basically useless. I downloaded a video from iTunes for my iPad. When I connected to my vga projector I kept getting a HDCP error and it would not play. Using it in the classroom with my iPad, it works with most of my appications and does a fair job.

I would not recommend it for most users. There are less expensive ways to go that work much better.

Signal gets cut off too frequently

    • Written by from Woodbridge

Im using this adapter on my son's wii u to connect to a projector. The signal cuts off too frequently, I'm thinking its because its not powered thus not being amplified?? I will be getting another adapter made by another manufacturer that is powered to see if that will solve the problem. So I have to say this product is not doing what I want it to do properly and is a financial loss for me. But during the times it work, I was grateful.
