Overview

Wireless backup for Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Time Machine icon

NEW
Automatic backup with Time Machine.

Time Capsule works automatically with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution. There are no cables, and you can back up all the computers in your home to a central location. New technologies in Time Capsule and refinements to Time Machine make backing up to Time Capsule using Snow Leopard up to 75 per cent faster than before.2

Storage icon

Server-grade storage.

The massive 1TB or 2TB server-grade hard drive2 gives you all the capacity and safety you need for backing up all your Mac computers.

Networking icon

Easy wireless networking.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is included for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more — without wires.4

Dual Band icon

NEW
Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.

For maximum range and compatibility, Time Capsule works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.4 And improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better performance and up to 25 per cent better range than with the previous-generation Time Capsule.5

Guest Networking icon

Guest networking.

Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives.

Drive Sharing icon

Wireless drive sharing.

Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive, whether you have a Mac or a PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing all kinds of files. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.6

Printer icon

Print without wires.

Print documents, photos and more from any room in your home or office to a central printer connected to Time Capsule via USB. (See system requirements.)

Security icon

Strong security and access controls.

Protect yourself with the built-in firewall and industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP.

AppleTV, iPhone, iPod touch icon

Time Capsule works with Mac computers, PCs, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and virtually all 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless devices — all at the same time.

    Great...except for the short lifespan

Written by SG from Costa Mesa

I loved the function, wireless ease of use and simplicity, at least when it worked. Alas, mine died after approximately 18 months of service. Not what I'd consider acceptable for something you'd expect to be heavy-duty since it's advertised as having a "server-grade" hard drive.

    C'mon Apple, we expect better.

Great little product for entry level data protection.

    Written by HC from Seattle

So... this is a great product for most people. It's best used with Apple TimeMachine. After reading some of the Negative Reviews I would say this. This device is really design for backing up your data. You should still Archive your important data on CD's and DVD's (family photo, etc). Time Machine gives non-technical users some form of revision control and hourly backup.

What is cool about the TimeCapsules is they are easily upgraded. If you are geeky you can easily upgrade the TimeCapsules as time goes on or if the Hard Drive fails. This device does have a HD inside so it can fail just like any other HD device. The goal is that your Laptop drive or other computer AND the TimeCapsule won't fail at the same time. That is what this device is deisgned for.

A more serious form of backup would a Netgear ReadyNAS. Where you go up in price but have RAID (2 or more HardDrives). And even with that sort of power many people recommend off-site backup as well.

Long story short. This will help reduce total data loss. This is a great product. If you have a lemon return it... I don't see why people freak out about lemons. Apple replaces defective devices. If your HD dies and it's after the warenty is over spend $80 on NewEgg and get a replacement HD. Google "TimeCapsule HD replacement". It's pretty easy.

My only "con" is that I don't need the Wireless support. But... that is minor.

I recommend this device, but if you really have files that you can't loose then you should also look into some of the Off-site software backup solution as well. Google "Mozy" or "Carbonite" or other "Offsite Backup Services".

I have 5 Macs using TimeMachine and backing up to my TimeCapsule. (The old 500Mb version). This past year I filed up the HD so I purchase a 1.5GB drive for only $80. Transfered the data to the new HD, popped in the drive, and didn't lose any data and didn't have to add any Cyber trash to a landfill.

Great product. Great job Apple. Apple, use ZFS natively under the hood of TimeMachine. ;)

Time Cpasule - Pay a Large Sum of Money to Go Insane

    Written by SB from PUTNEY

Some reviews that tell you how great Time Capsule is and Apple will espouse its simplicity etc. And if you believe this - go for it. I did, paid the big bucks and I have never been so infuriated in all my life. THIS PRODUCT IS A LEMON. For some it works great. But for others like me? - an expensive waste of money

Will it connect wirelessly -NO!!!!! Ok - I will try ethernet. Still flashing amber. Argghhhh!!!!! Read the instructions - check the connections. DOH!!! Didn't think of that. But now I have - still doesn't work. A COMPLETE RIP OFF.

So roll the dice if you want to. Fork out a bucket of money and if your Capsule works then all power to ya. If not, then don't blame me for this useless waste of money.

    nothing but trouble

    Written by PC from CROYDON

i had to take the first two of these i got back as the first wouldn't even create a network or do a complete back up.The second wouldn't allow wireless printing or complete a back up. The third backed up but has NEVER allowed wireless printing. After 4 months of calls to apple support i gave up on printing and settled for using it as an expensive backup and wireless hub (only as i couldn't get my money back). Now it constantly drops the network and often only runs at speeds slower than my old 14k modem. The only way i've managed to get any speed is to run it with no security. At a loss what to do rather than buy a very expensive airport extreme which my prove just as unreliable. More

If you are using the Time Capsule with a computer that's covered under AppleCare, the Time Capsule is covered. Note that they do NOT have to be on the same receipt. From the AppleCare Protection Plan terms & conditions:

"An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, Apple RAM modules and MacBook Air SuperDrive are also covered under APP if owned by you and used with the Covered Equipment."

Also, from Apple's page advertising the plan:

"An AirPort Extreme Card, AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, MacBook Air SuperDrive, and Apple RAM when used with a Mac covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan"

Note that I (and others) have verified this in practice - I am getting my dead 18-month old Time Capsule replaced under the APP on my MacBook pro.

The new 1TB and 2TB Time Capsules might have a different brand of hard drive or if not, they might have a better more reliable hard drive. The new Time Capsules were released April of 2009; so no one can say that" My 2TB Time Capsule died after 18 months!" I do not know if Apple has changed the hard drive or not; I would think they would try to do something about the two star rating for this product! More

It will replace the wireless part, but you will still need a modem for your cable or DSL. Many DSL modems have it's own router built in, this moves your Apple router one step away from the actual internet. This disables certain features that require a direct connection to the internet such as Back to my Mac.

If you do have two routers you will get a Double NAT error in Airport Utility and a flashing amber light on the Apple router. If your internet provider can't help you turn off the router in your modem they may be able to replace the router/modem they sent you with just a modem. I had to explain what I was trying to do to get them to replace it. If they can't replace it and you want to, or have to, stay with this provider you can set the Apple product to Bridge Mode where you're passed through directly to your ISP's router so services like iChat can connect to the destination directly.
