I'm using it to control an air conditioner, so I can turn it on about an hour before I get home, so it'll be nice and cool. Additional security features would be an improvement ... anyone on the same SSID with the WeMo app can control any outlet on that network.

I'm not sure who answers the questions on these products but I can only assume they haven't bought one and are purely speculating. Let's clear up the UK 220V issue straight off. It IS 220V and works perfectly in the UK. Any mention of 110V is for the US plugs and is nothing to do with the UK plug. If you walk into an Apple Store and take a look at the bottom of the box it makes it quite clear that the plug is a 220V version.

Unfortunately Apple are using the US photos which doesn't help the confusing but trust me, it's the UK plug and will work fine.

Onto the device. It's a fairly bulky thing and very similar to the old plugs you'll have seen for turning your lights on and off when on holiday. Well this of course does exactly that but it works remotely so you can be switching your lights on and off from anywhere in the world. The other very useful feature is the ability to set times for the switch to come on and off and at set times including picking specific days. As you add more switches you just give them custom names and before you know it you've got home automation in the palm of your hands.

This really is a great device that does exactly what it says on the tin.

Secure once married to your wireless network. I wasn't sure it would work away from home, but it works awesome over 3G / 4G with my VPN to home. It is like I am just there at home.

Wish it was a little cheaper in price, but works as advertised. The rules work good. I was worried the app would have to stay open to make it turn on and off with a rule. It looks like the switch has some smarts and knows what time it is.

Now I want about 10 more for the house.

  • Wemo Switches very tricky when updates are applied

    2.0 out of 5 stars

I have had 4 of these Wemo Switches and a Wemo Motion detector for some months.... They have always been tricky to apply the freq I have had 4 of these Wemo Switches and a Wemo Motion detector for some months.... They have always been tricky to apply the frequent firmware update requests but somehow after some effort they accepted each update.. UNTIL NOW...

The latest update to all my devices crashed all the devices and they all became undetected by the iPhone App... I called the Wemo support number and ended up talking with the Philippines call centre.. The agent asked me what IOS software is in use and I told him "the latest of course IOS 8.0.2" .. The response was.. "Oh yes we have had a lot of problems with that".... They suggested I should use an Android phone to setup the Wemos.. somewhat amazed, I told them... "that will cost "Belkin" $800 for me to buy a Samsung Galaxy ... joke was not appreciated... I am now promised a level 2 callback in the next days...

I finally got all devices working again by restoring all Wemos to the factory default settings, deleting the iPhone Wemo app, restoring the Wemo app and one by one I had to do the original setup process again... this was still quite a hit and miss process but I got there in the end and all are working BUT with out-of-date firmware... Now I will get repetitive warnings about Firmware..

This is definitely not acceptable.. the average user would not have had my determination to get them working...

I have seen numerous complaints by users....

Notwithstanding when working the devices are a good idea but poorly executed in software and firmware.

  • WeMo app almost there

    4.0 out of 5 stars

I have had an almost perfect experience with Wemo. I use the Switch for turning on table lamps around the house using the free App I have had an almost perfect experience with Wemo. I use the Switch for turning on table lamps around the house using the free App. This gives manual control, a variety of timer controls (time of day, sunrise/ sunset and off sets of sunrise/ set), there is even a random mode for when you are away from home which activates between sunset - rise using your geographical location to know when that is. They can also be automated via IFTTT.
Set up via the App is so simple it's almost child play.
If I have one complaint, it is with remote access via the app. The app states that it is continually updating firmware. This stops when i return to my home network. I get round this with IFTTT where i can send an email, text etc to remotely control the units if needed.
