    Outlook 2011 Don't expect anything

    • Written by from Fincastle

I was so hopeful. Let me save you some time.

If you buy this thinking Outlook is like the Outlook 2010 for PC-forget it.

It doesn't sync with iCal, google or the iPhone.

Sync services only syncs address book. Aweful. Microsoft holds back all of the features to
Maintain a stronghold. Ridiculous. I cannot believe Microsoft doesn't get what Mac users want-integration.

Good luck Microsoft. Can't wait for the updates! Terrible.

Microsoft - why don't you get it?

    • Written by from Solihull

It sounds silly, but the one thing I miss since my switch to Mac is Outlook - thank God I managed to give this a spin on a friends Mac before buying it.

Basically, it's not Outlook for the PC, it may be related but it's the runt of the litter.

Definitely, avoid spending your money - I have the previous version of Office for Mac and it does the job for the rare time in need to be compatible with windows - but to buy it for the Outlook alone is definitely a waste of money.

In face this attitude displayed by Microsoft simply reminds me of why I switched in the first place!

A Major Overhaul of Office for Mac, but Still a Poor Stepbrother to the Win

    • Written by from Greencastle

This is definitely a major upgrade of the Office for Mac, and if you are a power user getting the latest version of this product is a no-brainer. This is especially true if you collaborate on documents and projects with others a lot, or need Outlook for your e-mailing needs. However, if you are more of a casual user you will perceive Office 2011 more as an evolution than a true leap forward. You will probably do just fine for now by sticking to Office 2008. More

Better than 2008 but not up to expectations

    • Written by from Murphy

I'm a long time Office user for decades and have come to rely on Excel for most of my analysis work. After the long awaited Office 2011 came out, I had looked forward to significant improvements in performance and compatibility with Mac but quickly became disillusioned. These are some of the experiences I have encountered that have changed my opinions.
    1) Office 2011 is NOT 64-Bit - the application often hangs when running Word, Excel or PowerPoint and it were 64-Bit, there would be significant performance improvements.
    2) The inconsistency between each application in comparison to each other or the Windows version is frustrating. Simple tasks like copy and paste are not consistent between them and even the simple location of functions on the ribbons of Office 2010 and 2011 vary significantly.
    3) Excel in Office 2011 is a much better implementation than 2008 but still a far cry from the Windows version. The app is unstable when you deal with large amounts of data but you also encounter severe memory leaks with Office 2011 primarily driven by Excel but also exists with PowerPoint and copy-paste of images. What I find is that when Office launches, it consumes double the memory of my computer.

The only reason I give this 2 stars is because its an improvement over Office 2008 but its still a far cry from being an ideal application. I'm frankly very disappointed in Microsoft releasing a product that clearly has a long way to go to be effective not to mention their inability to want to truly work with Apple.

I hope someone gets some benefit from this commentary.

    Terrible product

    • Written by from Bridgend

I upgraded to MAC 2011 for Home and Business for my new job. What a disaster.
Outlook is very susceptible to bandwidth. if not on a very fast network, it constantly crashes. Despite the number of crash dumps sent, no fixes so far in 4 months. After i upgraded my router, it doesn't crash so often, unless i have Facebook, linkedin and twitter logged in using up that bandwidth.

Word on mac bares very little resemblance to Word on Windows. Things are not in the same place and it often locks up while typing and suddenly catches uo.

It's so bad i'm thinking of getting a windows laptop for work. I love my mac for its speed and it looks gorgeous, but have no choice, can't work like this.

I think Microsoft keep Office for mac poorly supported purely to discredit apple mac, but be warned Microsoft!! Your office is not the only one available, open office is free and does what most people need.

Conclusion: Complete waste of money and very expensive like most Microsoft products for what it does.

Arabic/Hebrew RTL/BiDi language support is still missing.
The admins at the Office for Mac Facebook page responded to my question regarding Arabic support. Their response was “This is the sort of passion we love to see! And please, please, please…have your friends send requests to this form so your voices are heard“.
This is the Product Suggestions form on Microsoft’s site. Choose “New Product Request” then write your comment. It can be whatever you want, I suggest “We have the right to have Arabic language support in Office for Mac 2011″. Make sure to click the check-box.
