Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin re-wrote the rules for speaker docks. Zeppelin Air provides a seismic shift in audio performance. Best Speaker System Ever

    • Written by from Charlotte

I have been using the Zeppelin for hours and hours, and I must say it is far superior to ANY competition. Originally, I was looking at getting the Bose SoundDock 10. But when I listened to the Bose, I was not as pleased. I am very confident in saying that this is the best sound system that there is to offer. It is very balanced, and even shows up on the ipod with a speaker EQ for bass, and some ipod settings. It was great that you could turn up and down the bass. I am very pleased with Bowers and Wilkins, and will be getting a lot more products by this company. B&W by far is the leading speaker brand for anything you may need. I would recommend them to anyone. More

    B&W Zeppelin air

    • Written by from Tulsa

The online reviews of this don't do it justice. The sound is truly amazing for an ipod/iphone dock and I could honestly give it a nod over a decent home stereo as it's simply that good. The only reason I can't go 5 stars is the occasional drop out of the air play. It's possible it's my home network, but I was honestly hoping it would be a little stronger than what it is. Overall though, the occasional drop out was far outweighed by the sound.
I didn't find airplay set up too hard, just connected it to my imac via the supplied ethernet cable and followed the diagrams that were provided. Pretty sure I was up and running in about 5 mins. B&W have done it again with this one and I'm very happy to have it!

Speakers stop working after a while. NOT a speaker problem !

    • Written by from Harrogate

    Hi,

I bought my wife 3 zepplin air speakers and a MacBook Air for her 40th birthday.
We placed the speakers around the house and had everything setup in no time, it was very simple and everything worked brilliantly.

That was until we changed internet service providers and had BT Infinity installed along with a new BT router.

After setting the speakers up to connect to the new BT router, we discovered that the speakers would stop working after 24 hours. You could no longer see the speaker on the mac or iphone until you turn them off and on again at the mains.
I discovered it was because of a setting on the BT Router that meant that the connection the router had given to speaker ( The IP Address ) would expire after 24 hours.

To get around this you have to manually setup the speaker by unticking the DHCP tick box and allocate it an IP Address that falls outside of the range of IP addresses that the BT Router would allocate to the speaker using DHCP.

E.g. if the router is set to allocate IP addresses in the range of 192.168.1.70 to 192.168.1.250 then you could allocate an IP address to the speaker of 192.168.1.60.

Now all is brilliant again !!

    Crashes constantly despite updates

    • Written by from London

I read up and reviewed all of the possibilities before buying this device. Everything I read said it was faultless so I was sucked in despite the price.

The set up is fine and it worked for around 24 hours. After three system re-sets, updates and reading as many forums as possible I still can't get a wireless song out of the Zeppellin Air without it losing connection. It does not then pick up the network once the connection once lost (something you'd expect with the price tag) so I am endlessly turning the device on and off again to the point that I've lost interest and let the thing gather dust. Don't be sucked in by the reviews, this thing sounds great on the dock by the Airplay is the selling point and it simply does not work. If you also read the reviews in details, it does not work with the I-phone 4s.

solutions to possible wireless / iTunes connection problems

    • Written by from guildford

I bought the Zeppelin Air for my other half as a prezzy, and then proceeded to spend quite some time enabling it at home on our iTunes account and then infuriatingly hours connecting it to our router (Virgin Super Hub)!!
I hope this short note saves someone the frustration.

Background: I was using a PC with Windows 7 and a Windows ie explorer.

Assuming of course that you have followed the Airplay set up instructions to the letter, I would suggest the following:
    1. Wireless connection problem:
To perform Step 5 - 10 of the setup, (the point when you are teaching the Zeppelin which wireless network and which password to use) Don’t use Windows ie!! This will really waste your time. You need a Firefox internet explorer. Quite simply you have a compatibility issue. You will find when using Windows ie, that once you have set the Zeppelin up, and disconnected the Ethernet cable, the purple light will just keep flashing at you and you will never connect to the router.
    2. iTunes compatibility issue:
Firstly do check that your iTunes version is up to date. Assuming that this is the case, I found that the solution lay with updating the ‘Firmware’ version on the Zeppelin to that of V1.3.1 (or more recent). I found the poorly written guide to this laborious experience on the B&W website.

On a final note. The speaker quality is great and I’m very happy to currently be sharing my tunes with the neighbours! So do persevere with the setup procedure. I just wish the IT team used in the development had been as qualified as the speakers team!

    Zeppelin Setup

    • Written by from Auckland

Zeppelin sound is amazing but AirPlay must be setup correctly.
    1. You must have a New router supporting the new wireless network speeds.
    2. Your Wireless Name must not use reserved characters and the same with your password.
    3. You should configure the zeppelin to have DHCP off and select your IP address manually

If you get the red flashing light then don't bother resetting it does nothing!
Go get the USB cable required and go to B&W website and update the firmware.
If you can not connect to the router the light will flash red ; reset firmware again.
If it still flashes you have one of the 3 points above wrong.
Worst case hardware direct to modem after a firmware reset and you'll have no issues!

Zeppelin Air has it's own temporary wireless network which you can access from your browser . Details are in Bowers & Wilkins online manual. This will enable you to set up Airplay without using an ethernet cable .
p.s. Zeppelin Air will only join a network with an alphanumeric password . If you have any symbols in your home network password you'll need to remove them or set up a guest account without any . Hopefully this will be sorted with a firmware update .

It is different to the current one. It uses a new DAC that improves distortion and it now goes louder still than the old. It's also got new drive units to improve the sound even better. It takes a lot of technology and parts from the MM-1's which sound incredible so it should be a good improvement on the current speakers.

As for the difference in AirPlay and iPod/iPhone direct, only time will tell. Everyone in our office bought an original Zeppelin but we all had very different experiences with interference noise from the iPhones on the units. My gut feeling is that I'd rather do AirPlay if my Wi-Fi is good enough but my current experience of AirPlay from iPhone to Apple TV is not good with constant dropouts and in some cases a total stop. Hopefully, iOS 4.3 final build will solve these issues.

I think I would wait for reviews and user experiences before jumping in. It's on my shopping list but I'll be waiting a month or 2 for the dust to settle before parting with that kind of money.
