Easy & reliable for old video tapes

    • Written by

I bought this to transfer a pile of old VHS home movies into iTunes. It could hardly be easier, and the quality seems quite good for only a hundred bucks (although I'd forgotten how crummy VHS looks compared to DVD).

The only issue I had is a couple of tapes had crinkled areas at the beginning, which it had a hard time with. But I was able to just skip forward a little bit to the non-damaged area and then it worked fine.

    quality too low

    • Written by from REDHILL

great little device but the output is very low quality. nowhere on the advert or on the box for that matter, does it specify the quality or number of lines output.
i have bought it, was very impressed with its simplicity & how well it works, but the quality is really disappointing.
does anyone know of a similar but better device?

    Occasionally choppy, but otherwise fine

    • Written by from Highland Mills

Like the previous reviewer, I have also experienced some choppy video. The first few seconds of each recording are choppy (looks like dropped frames), and occasionally in the middle of recordings or after the transition from one scene to another. However, for > 95% of the recording it's fine. The recorded quality is good (my recordings are mpeg4 because I don't have enough hardware for H.264) and the software is exceptionally easy to use. I'm not sorry I bought it, but it is annoying to have to re-record video that was inexplicably choppy. I've asked Elgato for an explanation and will update this review if I get one.

Poor Quality Output When Archiving Old VHS Tapes

    • Written by from Dunfermline

I purchased one to archive old VHS tapes. It is easy to use, and the video stream shown during capture is of a good quality, but the movie files it saves to the hard drive, over which you have no apparent control, seem to be at a much lower quality than the original VHS tapes. I cannot recommend it if you want comparable quality to VHS.

Works as advertised and so simple to use.

    • Written by from Columbus

Simply put this item works and is super easy to use. Includes all needed cables. Transferred videos are compressed so that don't use much Hard drive space. Video Quality is as good as original and if you imported into iMovie you could re-edit and enhance video with all the features that iMovie has. It was great to preserve 20 year old video that now I have on my Mac and even uploaded some to facebook for my friends and family to see. I normally don't take the time to write reviews but in my book this item gets a 10.

Shout out to the Easton Apple Store as they are always helpful

    Thank You

    Does exactly as described

    • Written by from Brooklin

It took me 5 minutes from taking it out of the box to digitizing my first VHS tape....4 minutes was spent trying to open the packaging. It couldn't be easier to convert an analog VHS tape to .H264 - wow.

Others have described "choppy" playback - I don't know what their hardware is, but my iMac was from early 2008 and I've upgraded it to 3GB of RAM. I've converted 2 tapes (one 2 1/2 hours the other 1/2 hour), watched both and haven't noticed any "choppy" playback they speak of.

The software is terribly simply and hardware is in my mind flawless. I only wish I had purchased this sooner.

    Worked as promised!

    • Written by from Sydney

I purchased this product even though I was aware of the negative reviews, and fortunately, I was not disappointed.

I used it to copy all of my old analog video tapes from an older Sony camcorder onto my iMac. The interface was straightforward and simple and the finished results were great. I did not experience any video jitter or audio dropouts in any of the 42 tapes I copied.

I was able to import easily into iMovie for editing, and dropped a couple of them onto my iPod, and I have to say, that for 24 year old video, the results are pretty darn good.

    I recommend it ^_^

    • Written by from Great Meadows

I bought this after deciding that I didn't want to spend $250 on a Canopus/Grass Valley product to convert VHS/VHSMini tapes to DVD. The first time I used it the program crashed 2hrs into the first tape- however after updating the software, it works fine. I know some people complain about the darkness of the picture or the low volume during transfer, but you can adjust the color saturation and volume in iMovie easily enough. It works exactly and as easily as advertised. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to convert their tapes before they start to disintegrate but doesn't want to pay through the nose to have a 'pro' do it.

Very easy to set-up and use on my '09 MacBook with OS 10.6.8. Transferred VHS (old 8mm originally) to Digital. I think the price is more than fair for what I was able to accomplish. I now have some very happy family members whom all received a DVD copy.

    Works Great!

    • Written by from Niagara Falls

I bought the EVC so I could transfer my favourite tv programs from my PVR to my iTunes account and then onto my iPhone. Because it is an analogue transfer the sound and picture quality are not quite as crisp as the HD source I'm recording from. That's okay, because I expected that when I bought the device. Transfer of files is done in real time meaning that it takes one hour to transfer a one hour program from the PVR to my macbook. I'm giving this product four out of five stars for this reason. Hopefully they will come up with a way to transfer programs digitally in just a few minutes. One other thing I should mention is that if you buy the EVC, download the software update from their site before your first transfer as it significantly improves the sound and picture quality over the software version 1.0 it comes with.

    Elgato video capture

    • Written by from san diego

Finally I found a solution that I have been trying to tackle for the last 4 years.
How do I get my video 8 Pal format to my PC and then burn to DVD?
Well I can't believe that it was this easy....
I had at least 40 tapes to transfer,I'm sure if I would have used a professional service I could have bought another IPad.
    Well I'm a satisfied customer.

    Choppy Picture and Intermittent Color

    • Written by from Warson Woods

I'll admit, the ease of use of the hardware and software were really nice. However, the quality of the picture was distorted horribly. The picture was much choppier than when playing the VCR tape directly to the TV. The color would intermittently switch to/from black and white. The VCR tape color still looked good playing directly on the TV, even after many years. The issues were present when using on my Mac and PC. I'll be taking this thing back tomorrow.
