This is a great image transferring device that is so easy to use. Saves a lot of money from taking old VHS, 8mm and VHS-c to have transferred to DVD. Couldn't ask for anything easier and uncomplicated to use.

After many years of evaluating ways I could get my old tapes digitized, I finally made a move and purchased the Elgato unit. I was never comfortable handing over my precious family memories to someone else to convert, fearing that I would not see them again. I very easily and successfully converted old VHS, Hi8, and mini cassette videos directly onto my computer. Now I can quickly scan them to find important clips and edit them through imovie. I couldn't be happier!

I am not a computer geek (ask my kids), but I was able to use to this software and device within in minutes of setting it up. It converted old VHS movies directly to imovie. I didn't have to worry about formats- it just directed the VHS videos into imovie. No problems, no updates needed. Worked great!

Looked choppy while recording, but great during playback

For some reason while recording, the video appears choppy anytime there is significant motion. However, upon playback the choppiness is gone. (At least in my experience.) Also, I do not see any compression artifacts (i.e. pixelation). Without actually comparing side-by-side, the final result looks as good to me as the original VHS. The user interface is very clean and straightforward. Make sure you check for software updates before making your first recording.

Easy to set up,worked the first time, great results. Not sure why some users had trouble with quality, but I suspect the quality of the source video may be the problem.VHS tapes do not age very well, old vcr's need to be cleaned and make sure the tracking is setup properly.I'm looking forward to converting old home movies to digital.

    No Color/ No signal

The software is very easy to install, all the transfer are in black and white and bit blurry.

The "no signal" message comes after a few minutes of play, but it seems that the transfer is still taking place

This is my first time ever responding to these reviews but I needed to say something about this piece of garbage product. (WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK!) Picture quality is terrible. No way should Apple even sell this. Returning this after I finish typing. Any one that gives this more than one star must be manufacturing this product. Also its not my computer as its brand new and top of the line MAC.

Finally I found a solution that I have been trying to tackle for the last 4 years.
How do I get my video 8 Pal format to my PC and then burn to DVD?
Well I can't believe that it was this easy....
I had at least 40 tapes to transfer,I'm sure if I would have used a professional service I could have bought another IPad.
    Well I'm a satisfied customer.

Very easy to set-up and use on my '09 MacBook with OS 10.6.8. Transferred VHS (old 8mm originally) to Digital. I think the price is more than fair for what I was able to accomplish. I now have some very happy family members whom all received a DVD copy.

Sometimes when I'm recording my games, I get a lag during recording which speeds up the finished clip for no reason! It still works, but it would be nice if someone can fix the lag problem....

I biought this item and it worked perfectly video was clear and perfect coming from Video 8mm.
Could not have been easier. Only thing you need to know is if you are transferring from a video camera and using the S video port you need and S Video cable with male plugs on each side and it works perfect.

    Exactly what I wanted!

Need something to back up my old VHS home videos from 1989 onward before I lost them forever, but importantly I wanted to go straight from the device to iMovie to chop out the bits I don't want.

Many other devices encoded the video to a format that iMovie wouldn't understand, so I had to go through the tedious process of re-encoding to a format iMovie would like, and then even after that iMovie wanted to optimise the file before working with it (regardless of the optimize checkbox).

Elgato Video capture is perfect, super easy to setup and use, encodes in a reliable format that doesn't have crazy high filesize and most importantly, I can go straight from my newly encoded video in to iMovie instantly. It's not very CPU intensive whilst encoding either, so doesn't slow your Mac down to a slog.

If I had to pick one gripe with this, it would be the record length options are not varied enough, I have LP tapes or numerous lengths and the fixed options just don't cut it, but that isn't too much of a problem, cos you can trim your video after its encoded from within the elgato app anyway.

Fantastic device and worth every penny imo, cos once those home videos go, they are gone forever!

This product works perfectly fine in my hands. So far I have converted over 35 VHS and digital tape videos made over a period of time since 1986 using a MacBook Pro. I am guessing that some folks had terrible experience because of an inadequate computer.

It works easily enough, but the resulting digitized video is so blurry you won't want to watch it. I'm angry at Apple for recommending this product. Total waste.

This product is horrible. The video looks like something out of an old PC with lost of blocks in the picture and discoloration. My original VHS looked like a blu-ray compared to the final digital product of this device. Stay away. Not worth a penny of your money. I hope the Apple Store will take it back. Apple, you should be ashamed to carry such a low quality product in your store.

Worked fine for a while but then began to quit while recording and eventually to stop recognizing USB2 port. Frustrating to leave it recording then to come back and find it has quit.
