Solid, well built external hard drive

    Written by RF from SHEFFORD

    18/01/2007

Excellent external harddrive - well built - worked straight out of the box. Built in USB hub is very handy too. Power brick is a little large but that's out of sight on the floor under the desk. USB and FW cables are a little short or my liking.
Haven't tried the supplied Retrospect Express backup software yet - Backup from .mac works just fine for me and does all I need at the moment.

    Raid 1? It might be

    Written by SC from BIRMINGHAM

    24/03/2007

Ordered one for use as a Raid 1 device (Mirrored HDD). Supplied documentation is awful with regards to setting up Raid 1 (just tells you to flick a switch).

Initially it didn't seem do anything, pressing the rebuild button for 10 seconds seems to have established the Raid (volume was half size afterwards - expected). It has a Raid 1 LED on the front, but this seems not to work (as discussed on the Iomegaforums). Also the fan on my unit constantly span up and down after it had been on for a while. I know the unit has a temperature sensor to control the fan, but the sensitivity of it seems a bit odd (spinning up and down every 5 seconds or so).

Build of the unit is solid, very handy to have USB/FW400/800 built in. PSU tends to get very hot. Drive noise isn't too bad, however use it with a MacMini and you'll notice it.

Due to issues with Raid config and indication not working I have to mark this down. I've sent mine back to Iomega for a refund. Maybe in 6 months time they may have fixed the issues I have.

    Very good but noisy fans

A seemingly solid unit with no operating issues, but very noisy fans. Not ideal for a media centre nor a quiet office space.

    D.O.A.

    Written by WD from London

    14/04/2007

I received this drive today - dead on arrival. Apple refuse to deal with it, so I have a choice of a 20 euro call to Iomega, or wait 4 days for an e-mail reply (due to the week-end). I'll never buy a non-Apple brand product from an Apple store again. Apart from that... the drive looks great, with a pretty blue light & two red ones (indicating failed drives). Fan is quite noisy - but I've heard worse.

    Appalling

Written by MH from Kings Lynn

    21/04/2007

Bought this drive to compliment my new Mac Pro. However I used it on my PC Laptop using MacDrive 7, while I was waiting for the Mac to arrive. Within a day it was showing that the drive was damaged, (although it would still mount). When my Mac Pro arrived, it wouldn't show in finder. However the other drives that were plugged into it WERE showing and could still be used. Actually getting Iomega to answer emails was a pain. They did however agree to replace the drive, (after paying 20 euros for the pleasure). Still not entirely sure why I had to pay when I had only had it for a few days.
All in all, it's a huge drive for a reasonable price, (Cheaper than an Apple 750 Gig internal drive). I am adding this part on 21 April and I still haven't received my replacement drive. As a company Iomega is appalling. It takes days for them to get back to you after any emails. I would never buy another. I wish I had bought it from Amazon, (wasn't available at the time), then there would have been a no quibble return and replace.

Bought for DV storage, once I realised you have to keep the power button pressed a little longer than normal to turn on it has given no problems. Four months old now and 500gb of recordings, good value.

    Another Dead on Arrival

    Written by HH from WIRRAL

    2/05/2007

Bought the 600 GB version, seems no longer available here. Super fast delivery, but dead on arrival. Some hours online and on the phone later (no, it does not mount) a replacement drive was sent. Works fine, I find size / noise / speed ok. Not a good start for the buddy I am putting all my photos and songs on, but I guess time will will tell...

    Good backup & build quality!

    Written by PX from Manchester

I read a few review about people receive a dead hard drive. It will more likely to be the courier rough handling rather than the product itself. I have problem in the past where driver throw items round the van. One driver dropped my order on my front garden, good job it's only software & not a hard drive!

I bought my from online Apple store, it works straight out of the box. People who use PC have to reformat the drive. Once it has been formatted for PC, you have to reformat it back to use on a Mac Pro.

I notice some user mention about Apple 750Gb hard drive more reliable than 3rd party hard drive.
Well this drive is make by Seagate NOT by Apple!
To buy the same drive with Seagate written on without Apple logo is about £100 cheaper.
So the Iomega drive is a bargain!!

Always remember, all hard drives will fail one day, is just a matter of when!

We all need at least 2 to 3 hard drives to back up all the data, when one fail you still got the other 2!

    Great Product, Great Price

    Written by GN from Ashford

    14/06/2007

Have had this since the beginning of April, bought direct from the Apple Ireland Store. Using it with a Dell D620 laptop (while I wait for a C2D Mini) and haven't had a problem - 600gigs of music and movie's on it. Worked straight out of the box, included all the necessary cables, etc. Great price, great build, great product.

Remember having an Iomega CD Writer back in the 90's and it was an awful piece of hardware, thankfully no problems yet with this. Delivery from Apple was fantastic, ordered it on a Monday and it arrived on a Tuesday.

A great product but keep it cool

    Written by VG from ELLON

    8/08/2007

This really is a lovely enclosure, it's got everything you'll possibly ever need and probably more and for the price you really can't go wrong. if you need to upgrade it at any point or change out a drive if one dies, it's simple to do.

i got mine and honestly the most annoying part of it is the LED light for the power on the front. it's very bright and if it's at eye level, it's quite distracting. a simple hack in the case did wonders for that.

buy one of these, they're not overpriced, which seems to be one of the most annoying things about terabyte raid enclosures.

    disappointing

    Written by GC from Cork

Looks great but I bought two of them one after the other and they were both faulty!! One LED flashed red since the very first time I switched them on and when the disc finally appeared on the desktop it got ejected improperly.
Moreover, there was no manual on how to set up the raid or to reset it!
    Very disappointing!

Reading a lot of reviews that these machines are DOA that might not be the case, I thought mine was.
The remedy hold the ON button for approx 3-4 seconds they then boot up.

Great product - Cool running and quiet

    Written by DS from Brighton

    27/09/2007

Don't believe the reviews(!) These drives are very reliable. To turn on, hold in the power button for about 5 seconds to turn the drive on and do the same to turn off manually.
Great power management - turns itself off when you unmount it.
Its a gorgeous case the complements the mac - rock solid and full metal. It runs quietly and very cool unlike many drives I've used before.
    Full Marks!

    Written by SN from London

Have had two of these capital drives for a while, no problems. They work reliably on Firewire 800, with which I have experienced many problems with other drives. A truly great product. Many years ago I had occasion to write to the CEO of Iomega about some problem, and I had an extremely quick and effective and satisfactory response. So far, I trust Iomega with my data. VERDICT: a good drive from a manufacturer who cares about customers.

    Avoid this drive

    Written by DR from London

    18/10/2007

Unless you're a real technical expert and have time to research all the problems you'll encounter, I'd recommend avoiding this drive entirely.

The documentation is awful - and just plain wrong is some places. If you want to change from the default RAID 0 configuration, you'll probably end up with 2 red lights which the manual says means the hard drives have failed. In reality, you just need to hold 'rebuild' for 10 seconds.

I had all sorts of problems after switching to RAID 1, with the drive simply not being recognised at all. Even now, the only way I can get it to work is with Firewire 400 (slower than USB2).

The case is solid, but it's really too big for a 2 drive enclosure, and the fans are quite noisy too. I also find the extremely bright LEDs on the front which light up my whole room at night quite annoying.
