Iomega 1TB UltraMax Hard Drive with Triple Interface + USB/FireWire Hub
Ultramax 1TB clicking on start up
Written by RP from Wokingham
24/08/2008
I have an Ultramax 1 TB set up for RAID 1 on which I store my iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie libraries (basically all my important data that is irreplaceable or would take some time to replace). This drive was purchased partly due to its feature set but also because I have had an Iomega 320GB single disk drive for 2 years (now used for time machine) which continues to work flawlessly.
The drive has worked well for about 40 weeks but now clicks for several minutes when I try to power it up. Reading other posts I fear that this is a sign that the drive may be about to fail, hopefully this is the same power supply issue that others have experienced rather than something more serious.
I have contacted Omega as the drive has 62 weeks warenty remaining and will let you know the outcome.17 of 18 people found this useful

Good product - good support

Iomega admits that there are some issues with the power supplies on this drive. Mine just failed, but given the serial number, they shipped a new one out to me in three days. Drive itself has been very stable and a pleasure to work with. Just about to buy number 2.
One word of advice, if it hadn't been the power supply, because its a RAID drive, the cheapest quote I got for data recovery was over £1,700 plus vat.12 of 15 people found this useful

Works fine

I have these at my work (3) and home (3).
At work I have used it as a TimeMachine drive for Mac Book Pro and for addepartments TimeMachine backup device.
Never had a single problem. These has been working fine now about 10 months, in a very demanding enviroment.
At home there is 3 disks for TimeMachine (1) and for Final Cut Studio (2).7 of 10 people found this useful

Excellent HD

I bought my 1TB drive from Apple internet store 2 years ago... never had any problem!
I have read the below comment, the machine must be either use in a very hot environment or being drop!
I had 500GB LaCie drive the same time as I bought my Iomega 1TB drive. I use both with Time Machine. The LaCie drive is first to go... pack up after 12 months!
The LaCie drive won't mount, when I took it for repair, it has major header volume problem!
Nowadays all hard drives made in China with different name print on it. Noone can really compare with different brand hard drives anymore... all come from the same place. Even the Great iPods made in China :)9 of 13 people found this useful

Don't waste your money

I agree with others below. I first had a 640GB Ultramax as my Final Cut Pro scratch disc and had all my films (over 24hrs) on there when it simply stopped working 7months after purchase. Eventually Iomega replaced it with a 1TB Ultramax which lasted 5months. I had recaptured all my FCP video again and going out of the country I stored other important large files on there and then removed it from the G5 and hid it away in a bedroom (in case of break-in and loss of G5). When I returned to the UK 7weeks later I retrieved the Ultramax, reconnected it to the G5 and....nothing! It never worked again.
Everything else was backed up but all my FCP scratch discs and associated files were too large for my other hard discs so I lost the lot again. Okay, stupid but who would have thought two Ultramaxs would fail within 7 and 5months of purchase. Would I buy another ? Not on your life.
And as for the Iomega "award winning website", not helpful, and they expect you to pay to discuss their equipment when it packs up 70weeks inside warranty.
My advice, buy LaCie and forget this. The Ultramax looks good but that is all I can say positive about it. If you buy one you will be nervously listening for the little click that indicates Doom from Day One, I promise you. Can I give NO stars, okay one for looks.17 of 23 people found this useful

I am very unhappy
Written by GM from LONDON
27/07/2008
I bought one in December (from the Regent St Apple Store, mainly because of the range of plugs at the back which, theoretically make this an excellent extra hub), and it ran well for 6 months. It was used as the main machine for Time Machine, and proved reasonably quiet (but not silent) and no trouble. Then it started to click, and disappear from the desktop. Disk Utility and DiskWarrior can't do anything with it, because they say there is a mechanical error.
Since there is in excess of 500gb on the disk, I went out to buy another in order the transfer all the date before sending it away under warranty.
The second version (again bought from the Regent Street store) didn't last 6 seconds. It wouldn't show up on the Desktop. Diskwarrior said it needed initialising and called up Disk Utility to do the job. After about 2 hours of Utility trying to partition the disk I decided nothing was happening - so this one was is going back too.
It is fair to say I am very unhappy, especially if I have trouble recovering the data on the drive.
Time Machine is a great piece of software, but rather useless if the backup discs are questionable. Having also gone through 2 LaCie 500gb drives, I am wondering if any external hard drives are reliable enough - a thought Apple should address.
I can't recommend this machine based on my experience.17 of 20 people found this useful

Back Up Please
Written by MP from Orcop

This drive is nice, sits tastily next to my ancient powerbook, not too quiet, not too loud though, sweet LEDs for those of you who like lighty uppy things. Only problem was the power supply failed after a month, so unable to access the lovely people's wedding that was nearing completion, that and my entire itunes library....they are sending me a replacement supply though so tomorrow i find out if it is only the supply that's gone. So moral of the story, don't store your entire life on it unless your mirroring it down to 500GB. Get two instead!

Failure within 1 year
Written by TA from LARGS
26/06/2008
I purchased the 1Tb drive with a new iMac last year to provide a secure raid backup for images, only when I recently hit the maximum 500Gb in raid configuration I looked at a new drive and purchased the Drobo with 4 (1tb) drives. Luckily I copied everything over to the new Drobo a couple of weeks ago and only then reformatted the Iomega drive for time machine.
The drive has not moved from the desk for months yet last night it started to click and the drives would not spin up. If all my data had still been on the drive even with raid configured I am not sure what I would have done.
The drive was fast connected to the iMac firewire 800 port, 4000 odd images would transfer in under 10 minutes. But having researched more and more it appears that you get what you pay for and Iomega don't appear to have a strong reputation for creating reliable drives.
It is a great drive if you don't depend on a reliability and the ability to easily get to your data in the event of a failure.25 of 27 people found this useful

Video editing needs this device
Written by DO from Tuam
17/06/2008
I do quite a bit of editing of AVCHD video. Whilst the original video is small, once the Apple intermediate CODECS are used during an import, the resulting video for editing purposes is huge. An external firewire 1TB drive (though USB also works niceley) is just the ticket.
Tips:
1) Do occasionally use the built-in tools in OS X to CHECK the drive is OK and if necessary repair or reformat (particularly if its being bounced about in aircraft checked-in baggage). I was loosing frames or worse during AVCHD video import - ALL resolved once I used tools as mentioned.
2) As other's have stated, the power switch needs to have pressure applied for a few seconds before the device starts or stops. i.e. a quick press is insufficient.
Good stuff:
1) This is getting cheaper & cheaper and becoming a no-brainer investment for such a great device.
2) For those with the '800' type firewire interface, (e.g. recent iMacs and MAC Pros), there is a noticeable speed increase with the processing of big video files.
3) Also works well with slower firewire and USB2.
Not so Good:
1) A bit noisy, the cooling fan 'hunts' i.e. its speed is ALWAYS changing. No good if you are doing voiceover work with the microphone and drive in front of you.
2) This might sound silly (well O.K. it is silly)., but the blue lighting inside the case is TOO bright. I wish I could switch it off.9 of 11 people found this useful

Disappointed
Written by GG from BRISTOL

Just what I wanted a good quality external drive with Firewire 800. Looks good with plenty of ventilation to keep the drive cool. Bought 2 so that I can be doubly sure my data is safe. One Power Supply fails, no problem the Iomega web support assures me that my purchase is still under guarantee. PROBLEM no more response from Iomega WHATSOEVER. It is not even convenient as a DOOR STOP! I do apologise I have found a use for the mains lead it fits my shaver.

Professional Review

Im no person to complain about apple products i have 3 computers myself but since I just bought the new Lomega it has steard me off apple forever! The Lomega Hard drive is inefficient for your average needs. The first month i got it the computer didn't recignize the system and denied its entry! The machine needed to be fixed 7 times in 5 months! The metal sheets on the sides got dinted by the smallest jolts. The power button lost its behind mechanism and i then had to get 4 paper clips unbend them so they are straight tie them together and poke it in whenever i wanted to power it up. Big money saver right here... dont buy it!

Flawed

Bought May '07 as server drive, mirrored. Power fault within the logic board after only 10 months. Not great for a product that gives the impression of robustness. Should work 3-4 years without fault. Thank god the drives haven't blown, but then they are made by seagate - so reliable.

Great product, poor support

Purchased March 2007, and it's work faultlessly for 12 months and on just about 24x7.
It's died, 2 year warranty is fine, but try getting support from Iomega. No response for 4 days, and if you want to call them, get your credit card out, as it's 20 Euros plus VAT.
I shall be calling Apple for a replacment tomorrow.

Excellent external HD with little to let it down.
Written by AJ from Prestatyn

I have had this drive for about 6 months now and it has performed very well indeed. I currently have mine set up in a RAID array to give me a hardware backup of the data stored on the drive. The FireWire 800 interface is very fast and allows for impressive video encoding direct to the external device.
The only complaints that I have are that it's a little on the noisy side (but you can switch the fans off if it's stored in a cool place) and it doesn't power up and down with your machine. Other than that, it's exceptional.54 of 82 people found this useful

I needed to edit 15 hours worth of HDV footage in one go on my macbook pro 2.4. So I bought this baby to store video data and it has worked flawlessly every time. Final Cut Express HD 3.5 was able to download entire footage from my HDV tapes to this drive using firewire 800 and gave me smooth workflow. Little noisy, I agree but hey, come on, 2 Fast SATA drives inside, what do you expect. I will buy one more of these without a doubt.

Hear the sound of the sea
Written by JH from MILTON KEYNES

Unlike other drives we have (Iomega, Time Capsule) this baby puts out a lot of noise with the fans whining constantly, even when there is no disk activity. Not suitable for co-location with you. Should be behind closed doors.
It's an eery sound, like the wind blowing over a beach in the dead of winter. Or ghosts of long dead M$ developers moaning at the moon.

To good for time machine
Written by AM from West Dumbartonshire

This is a speedy ext hardrive with firewire 400+800 and usb 2, three port hub is waisted, if you just use it for time machine.
Use with iMove, photoshop, garageband or any other large files and buy a cheap quality hard drive for time machine backup.
Stylish, speedy, built-in hub, firewire 800 for fast transfers.
Yes it makes a slight noise from the fan and clicking when retreving data, but its not that loud.
Great product.26 of 58 people found this useful
