Excellent harddrive which runs quietly and reliably.
Written by DM from Kingston Upon Hull

I don't understand how anyone can write that this harddrive is noisy? It sits right next to my macbook pro while I work all day everyday running time machine and it runs quickly and quietly. I hardly even realise when it does its updates!
I run it on firewire 800 and the performance is stunning. I would greatly recommend one of these if you need this quality of storage. Now all I need is for Apple to make time machine available to run on an external harddrive over an airport extreme!35 of 53 people found this useful

Fantastic features for the price.

This particular external drive system from iomega actually over-delivers on it's promises. What is not clear from the product description is that this is an intelligent controller with 2 physical drives inside. It can be configured for various types of RAID etc and represents fantastic value for money. It is very quiet and runs nice and cool. Access is fast via FireWire or USB2. I highly recommend it.

Great While It Works AVOID
Written by RK from The Hyde
13/02/2008
I have had mine since October 2007. It has worked fine until last night when it suddenly stopped working and now displays 2 red lights to indicate both drives have failed!!
So 10 years of work on making files and £££ are all lost.
Yes the firewire 800 is a nice touch but in future i'll just stick with usb2 or firewire 400 on a better make of hard drive
The support website is a waste of time. It just says drive has failed and has no steps to see/detect what the actual fault may be.
It is still under warranty but as it has backed up my entire iMac and has private information on it I won't send it away for obvious reasons.
So £225 for 4 months. Buyers beware!!!!22 of 29 people found this useful

Superb Product
Written by SW from Malvern

Absolutely superb, simple to hook up & does exactly what it says on the tin. Set up with Time Machine is oh so simple. Apple takes some beating for design & build quality but Iomega run them pretty close on this one.
Some reviewers report fan noise but in my experience this is no worse & probably a lot better than the average PC cooling fan. Activity/access noises are a lot less than on comparable drives. In short, masses of storage, beautiful design, good price...why would you not buy one?40 of 61 people found this useful

I have been using a lower grade version of this hard drive the Iomega 600GB for well over a year now.. If this new upgrade is anything like its poor relation - go for it.. Its a dream to use and an idiots toy. Plug in .. Connect lead to computer ... Switch on .. and it just WORKS.. simple as that.. Go for it..

Day 1 Review
Written by BD from London
13/01/2008
Just bought this today as a time machine drive for my macbook pro and also as a storage area for long-term, large files that I dont necessarily want cluttering up my internal drive.
Worked fine out of the box. Powered up, Leopard asked if I wanted to make this a time machine drive, which i did, it did a full system backup and has been doing hourly ones every since, as expected.
I've ejected and powered it down a few times to make sure it all works fine. Left it in default RAID 0 config and probably won't change that, despite thinking about it.
I'll let you know if i encounter any issues.

Ideal Time Machine external HDD
Written by WP from STOCKPORT
19/12/2007
I purchased this 1TB external HDD from an Apple Retail store specifically for the purpose of Time Machine backups of my MacBook which has an almost full 250GB internal HDD; because Time Machine stores all the changes to the system I figured a this amount of headroom was justified. I plug another FireWire drive into the back of this so that I can access 2 FireWire drives even though my MacBook has only a single FireWire connection.
I chose this drive because of the FW400 and FW800 interface (my next Mac might have FW800) and for the hardware RAID capability. It ships with RAID0 which is ideal for Time Machine; I don't see any reason to compromise capacity and performance (by using the RAID1 setting) if you use this drive solely for Time Machine.
To answer previous criticisms/queries: Press and hold the Power button for a second to start the drive up. Fan noise has been acceptable but during disk access the enclosure does seem to amplify the clatter and rattle of all the disk activity---but no more intrusive than the internal HDDs in a PC.
In summary I think this drive hits the sweet spot by including the features I want and saving me money by not including features I don't need. Highly recommended.100 of 118 people found this useful

Three months on, this drive has worked perfectly with Time Machine backing up hourly and daily backups using the partition.
It loses a star because its a bit noisy, other than that, its great.53 of 62 people found this useful

Good product
Written by TH from Bradford on Avon

Worked out of the box, but does make quite a bit of noise when data is being stored, fan noise does fade in to the background, but in a quiet room/office can sound a bit like a wasp at a window.
Full copy backup of hard dive took the best part of 12 hours so a good read of the pdf manual is time well spent, paper manual in the box is basic. As others have noted the firewire cables in the box are short about 1ft.

Fab drive ... but RAID does not work
Written by HT from LONDON
1/12/2007
Bought it for the RAID option - which I never got to work, albeit following the instructions to the letter. So now I have a 1 TB drive instead of a RAID 512 GB drive. It's fast and reliable, so good that I have bought another one to back up the first one ... RAID didn't work on that one either.

Got it from JohnLewis cost a little more but then I don't mind paying more as you can pick it up from the store and return it if it becomes faulty.
I re-configured it to Mirroring mode and so far it's worked great, you only get just over 460gb, but at least you get the reassurance that it's backed up.

Good Drive
Written by AR from WHITBY
25/11/2007
Have had the drive for a few months now and all i can say is that it has been faultless, the drive size is nice, not too big and you can stack them if you need more storage, comes with all cabling for all connectors, USB, Firewire 400, 800
The drive is very quiet for me, compared to my Formac drive it is way ahead, far quieter and more reliable in a smaller form factor [don't go near Formac god!]
Would recommend this drive to anyone7 of 8 people found this useful

great while it lasted
Written by AN from London
17/11/2007
Initially great (just worked straight out of box, huge capacity, not *too* noisy) but mine stopped working after a week.
Lights on, fan on, drive spinning - but MacBook Pro won't mount the drive any more, with AirPort Disk can't see in Finder under SHARED any more, etc. Tried off/on, rebooting mac, rebooting airport extreme - all to no avail.
Popped into Apple Store at Regent Street but person I spoke to didn't really have any other ideas, gave me the card for Apple Care. Haven't called them yet ....
but grrr.74 of 90 people found this useful

Works well, but too noisy for me.
Written by PT from SOLIHULL
4/11/2007
I recently moved over to an iMac, partly because of the low noise levels - and with Leopard I was keen to use Time Machine and the Iomega seemed the ideal solution.
However it is extremely noisy - noisier in fact than the PC I replaced with the iMac. The problem is not the dual drives but the small high speed fan used to cool them.
Otherwise it worked fine, so if noise is not an issue then go ahead - it works as described, but if you value a quiet working environment, I would look elsewhere.
I returned the item to the Apple store for a refund (which was very painless - thank you Apple).

Looks fantastic, works great
Written by MP from Sydney

Looks fantastic next to a mac tower, if you just use it "as is" out of the box - works great. I don't know who was trying to mess around with the raid settings - maybe that person had problems but if you just want a large hard drive and don't care how they fit 1TB into this box, it's great!
