Iomega 1TB UltraMax Hard Drive with Triple Interface + USB/FireWire Hub
Recovered
Written by BO from LONDON

I've had one of these drives since they were released. Unfortunately after a few years it started to make some pretty unhappy sounds and eventually would not start. Fair enough, it had taken a battering in terms of never being switched off and almost constantly being used for backups.
So I left it for around 10 months, disappointed that I may never recover some of the data, but still happy enough to purchase another one of it's type (I'd read that sometimes the power supplies die, so a new drive with a new power supply might work). Today I read that if you simply hold the power button on for a around 5 seconds, they would "reset" themselves. I did and it did. Drive is back! Fantastic!
Now to back it up... onto new media.(1 of 2 people found this review useful)

Don't buy this product

I have bought two of these units and today neither one works despite having had one swapped under warranty. As a mission critical backup device, they are a disaster since the device barely ever works and thus the data is never available. Now I am looking elsewhere and will definitely not ever waste my money buying from Iomega again

RUN! SAVE YOURSELVES!!

This is a very UNstable drive in an attractive cool blue lit enclosure. Mine begun it's slow and pathetic death after a mere 8 months of casual use. It was one of three drives (the other two were from a different brand and still going strong!) in a music studio. I felt from the start that i had made a mistake with this drive as it was extremely noisy compared to my others, even in sleep state. Performance was very fast over firewire 800 and setup time is minimal.
Powering this thing up is by push and hold for a few seconds until you hear the two whimpering drives spin-up, not such a big deal but annoying nonetheless.
I would sincerely suggest you look elsewhere if stability and longevity are your highest priority.
...And yes, I have lost unretrievable data in this useless hard drive. Run! Run hard!(2 of 4 people found this review useful)

Works as expected...

I purchased this drive 6 months ago as a Time Machine for my MacBook Pro. I use the FW800 interface and I also daisy-chain a second FW400 drive to it.
Both drives work flawlessly; the Iomega is recognised as the Time Machine every time it is connected as is the second drive which is mounted as a normal drive (used simply as a file store). Transfer rates using FW800 are excellent, as expected from the interface.
The drive has been configured as RAID 1; this mirrors the data on the disks (the drive has two disks in it) and if one disk fails, it can be replaced without losing data.
In terms of construction, the Iomega is very well built and matches Apple designs; the improvement on the construction over previous products is an obvious benefit following EMC's acquisition of Iomega (for those who do not know, EMC is the leading enterprise storage solutions firm with their products being some of the best in the industry).
The supplied EMC software is a cut-down version of the more sophisticated solution supplied by EMC and takes some effort to get used to. But it is indeed an excellent alternative for those who do not wish to use Time Machine or have more specific backing-up requirements.
There are a few negatives; more notably the fan is more noisy than anticipated and the drive does not switch off automatically when the computer is powered down (although, strangely, the second drive does!). Also, the supplied FW800 cable does not fit tightly in the MacBook Pro's FW800 port; might worth upgrading if this proves problematic.
Based on my experiences, I would not hesitate to recommend this drive.(10 of 11 people found this review useful)

No No Iomega

Died suddenly after just over two years. I now have 2 500 GB seagate drives to use elsewhere but none of my digitized old videotapes. Stay away.

This is the worst IOMEGA product I have ever had in my life. Just look nice but work like a trash!!! I have used it for only 6 months but it is dying. It hangs many times and forced me to turn it off and on to be able to work again after I put my Mac sleep for a while. Makes my wallet crazyyyyyy.

Good looking but poor build quality.

This is a good looking product but is marred by build quality. I have had my hard drive for about six months and so far the power switch has completely failed however long I press it. Fortunately plugging the power into the AC mains does mean it comes on. In addition the fan became extremely loud and permanently on. I use it RAID 0 mode for audio and video scratch files so have fixed the fan noise by disconnecting it. In addition if my Mac Pro goes to sleep the disk drive hangs with both disk access lights lit up and can only be fixed by unplugging it. Even if the disk drive is unmounted before sleep it still hangs when the machine wakes up. I would not use this drive for critical data.

This drive has recently failed on me. Luckily I was backed up; I would not trust this drive after reading all the other negative reviews and from my own experience.

Frustrating
Written by RM from Pentyrch

When you buy a product like this, you don't want great things like fancy lights and sweet design. At the end of the day you just want a robust, reliable hard disc that works well and if it looks nice, it's a bonus.
This drive struggles to go the distance, doesn't like being moved and the power supply unit is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
There are better options out there.(4 of 4 people found this review useful)

Sorry to say it failed

Nice looking kit and really well presented. We have owned one for about a year however the drive has failed. One of the chip set alight. You would expect some degree of circuit protection to circumvent this, but it has let us down badly.
