    Performance has degraded

    • Written by from Driftwood

I first bought this to replace a Dlink router that needed to be rebooted every month or so. This worked well for a year, but in the past couple of months I've had numerous degraded performance issues, ranging from mysterious slowness to completely failing to pass traffic indefinitely. If it happened once every few months I suppose that would be tolerable, but happening every few days has completely ruined my confidence in this. And no, the problem is not on the carrier side, since the router does not respond to ping as it normally should. Seemed to begin when I configured an Airport Express to join or extend the network, though that may be a coincidence since I took it offline and still experienced the same issues with the router. The next time this happens I am probably going to retire it and replace with the Dlink in storage, or reconfigure it from scratch, which I'm not looking forward to.

    USB Compatibility

    • Written by from Belvidere

Overall this is a great product, almost doubled my wireless throughput, have not found a dead spot in the house, will try outside when it is warmer. The BIG ISSUE I have is with USB compatibility. It was one of the considerations I had in spending the extra $$ for this device as I am also adding an external drive for backup purposes, just as the Apple website identifies, connect a printer or external drive. As I am still on a PC at home I could not use the Time Capsule and chose a WDC My Book. The problem is the USB port on the Extreme will not work with this. The apple utility recognizes it on my PC but that is it. After talking to support I found that it would only work if I reformatted to FAT32 which is not happening. Have not seen this limitation in any literature or for that matter in the ops manual or any support topic.

    SNMP Disabled!

    • Written by from Corona

With this model of the Airport Extreme Apple decided to disable snmp, so now I cannot monitor my bandwidth at home. I have to trust my provider to give my correct numbers. lol

Other than that it is a decent router

I should have bought an Airport Extreme a long time ago!

    • Written by from LAVAL

Installation took no more than 5 minutes, literally. And finally no more signal dropping. Signal is reaching every corner of the house (basement + 2 storeys), even outside on my driveway. Connection speed is at 300 Mbps on my 802.11n devices/laptops. I have at least 10 devices connected to it. I'm eager to check the speed it on 802.11ac devices.

Got rid of signal dropping? yes. Delighted? yes. Paid a bit more? Yes. Recommend it to a friend? absolutely.

If you do not need to create VLAN's and do crazy stuff, then this router is a no-brainer for home use -should you be willing to spend the extra bucks. For me, it's worth it. I highly recommend it.

    Simply works

    • Written by from Nort Hills

Were an audio video integrator we don't do very complex networks due to us leaving wifi as a last resort for anything other than mobile devices. Installed a Ubiquiti system with no one but myself connected and i was getting an average of 12-15 m down .. took out the "Fancy router and AP .. plugged one of these guys in and 100+ down which is what the client was paying for. just a week ago a client had some dlinks as APs performed poorly.. took them out placed 5 Extremes (Big house) in the same location as the not so old equipment and boom .. from 8 to 50+ now which is what they are paying for .. These things work. plain and simple easy to set up .. easy to use and open ports.... unless you really need to create vlans and get crazy (which is 90% of the time not the case) this is the best product to get .. period

A bit pricey but works great.

    • Written by from Dulles

Having used it for 6 months now it hasn't given me any trouble. I use both the wireless and wired side of the router and have been surprised at how much more distance this router gives me. The 5 ghz and 2.4 ghz being able to work at the same time for different devices is a great benefit.

    AirPort Extreme

    • Written by from MAIDENHEAD

Having coped with numerous and frustrating problems with BT Home Hub 3 for years I decided to give Airport a try; initially AirPort Express which worked well, but lacked the coverage I was hoping for in a compact, 3 bedroom house. Both Apple Store Covent Garden and Regent Street assured me that I could exchange the router if performance was inadequate in any way, so I exchanged Express for Extreme. Simplicity itself to setup with AirPort Utility App on iPad - ten minutes at most - and so far performance is excellent. After a few non-Apple glitches to add a Range Extender (TP-LINK WA901ND wireless access point) required to get a good signal in my garden study - 25 meters remote from the AirPort - I now have a fast network that seems trouble free across the whole property. A single iMac on Yosemite, oldish laptop on Snow Leopard plus two iPads, iPhone 6 & 4S and occasional HP laptop on Windows 7 all perform perfectly. Wonderful. I only wish I had done it before and saved myself many hours of trouble shooting and frustrating calls with BT!

    Fixed my problem!

    • Written by from Norfolk

I was having a lot of wi-fi internet problems. My network would stop working, sometimes I couldn't connect to it, sometimes the speed would decrease considerably for no intelligible reason. I got a new modem and a new router but the problems persisted.

A friend recommended this to me but I was reluctant due to the high cost compared to its competitors. As with all Apple products, you get what you pay for. I haven't explored many of the advanced features but it has completely solved my network issues. And it's super fast. I can consistently get over 50 Mbps (with my last set-up I maxed out at about 20).

Bottom line: it's expensive but you get what you pay for.

I regret buying this router, it has not worked correctly since day 1

    • Written by from Los Altos

I've had to replace this router twice. I really regret buying this router. I've had to reset it and my iMac numerous times just to get a connection and it doesn't want to work with my ATT modem. This router is now assigning wifi addresses that are not even on the network. I'm going to Apple store tomorrow and get my money back and buy anything but an Aport Extreme.

    Solid Router

    • Written by from Scituate

This is a very solid router. I hooked it up to my Comcast service and set it up in about 10 minutes. It works seamlessly. I noticed a strong speed increase across all of my devices - iPhones, iPads, and laptops - and the range was greatly improved. I have coverage on my back deck that I didn't have before with a strong signal. I highly recommend.

    New AirPort Extreme

    • Written by from Dover

I have owned and used a lot of apple products... from 2007 to present and will say my home lives and breaths apple.... so far i have had the router for about a week, and i have had no such issues. My range is a lot better than my current verizon fios router at the same tech specs... i don't have any issues with the air play like i did before... however i will say some things I don't like are that you cannot change channels, and or make a lot of sys changes like a std router...

Solid and reliable but hard to manage

    • Written by from Arlington

I have several generations of Airport Extreme and at three of each of the last three generations of APE and Time Capsules. They are solid performers, standards conformant, and secure. The early time capsules all failed due to overheating issues, but the current batch are great. The biggest problem I have with them is that unless use Airport Utility for Windows, it is very frustrating to manage them. Apple has severely limited their management app for iOS and OS/X. This is enough for me to switch to DD-WRT based hardware.

The OS/X airport utility up until version 5.6 was very good, but when Apple released the very limited iOS management app, they mirrored the new OS/X utility with the same limited feature set. Just as an example - under Windows you can show the DHCP address assignment table, but under OS/X or iOS you cannot. However with the Windows utility you can use the highly useful Back-to-My-Mac remote access feature for remote management.

So if you just want something to set up and forget, the APE is great, if you want to do anything else and you aren't using Windows, look elsewhere.

First Apple product that has frustrated me so much that I returned..

    • Written by from Seattle

    it in a day.

For all the fancy features it claims to have, it simply does not work. If the ethernet LAN connections work then the wireless network does not work while the yellow light on the Airport Extreme(AE) keeps blinking. If I manage to get the green light on AE then there is no internet connection. After shifting through a swath of user forums - interestingly enough Apple support does not even bring up this issue - that discusses this problem at length, I am giving up. I followed the same steps to connect the old AE - turn everything off (modem, AE and laptop), hard reset AE, turn on modem, wait for 10-15 minutes, turn on AE and wait for it to turn green and then turn laptop/PC on - and the old AE worked as usual without any problems.

In coming up with fancy design and big feature set, Apple seemed to have forgotten Steve Jobs mantra "It simply works" while designing the new Airport Extreme. That is a shame.

    Unreliable. Do NOT buy!

Failed multiple times within 1 year of moderate usage. Lost connection to HP printer; could not re-establish connection after inexplicable severance months after successful setup. Will never buy Apple accessories after this overpriced rip-off. Seeking reliable products elsewhere.

A whole new level of WiFi range, speed and reliability. Mind blown.

    • Written by from MOUNTAIN CREEK

Forget everything you think you know about home wifi. Airport extreme well exceeded my expectations, I never dreamed that a home wifi network could be this wide and fast with a single access point. I have full wifi reception throughout my house and can stream 1080p to 3 apple tv's simultaneously without buffering. It doesn't even make sense how much of an improvement I have experienced upgrading from a high end netgear dual band n series router. Can not recommend this product enough. Life changing.
