Brilliant, couldn't be happier so far

    • Written by from ENCINO

Did i NEED it? Not sure, had a airport extreme and express (to extend range) in home and decided to replace both with this 3TB 2013 Time Capsule and have an easy backup drive built in, so far excellent. Range seems to be way better, set up was a breeze, just left everything at default settings (didn't mess with channels, or 5gz) and so far getting my paid for speeds throughout the house on speedtest on iPhone 5's, macbook pro retina, air, iPads etc. The time machine backup is also amazingly a breeze, backing up 3 different machines, don't have to partition the drive based on which machine, you just tell it to backup to the time capsule and it figures it out for you. Love it. One small minor wish, Apple make a BLACK one please, it would blend in with people's components better like the apple tv, but whatever.

Love it, love it, love it!

So much faster and the range is insane. I can get a signal a block away!

And all the extra storage, Thanks Apple....keep up the great work.

    Easy to setup, works well

    • Written by from Cypress

I found this extremely easy to setup and it is working well. I am really happy with the Bonjour printing support. On my Mac it worked without any changes. On my Windows 7 box, I downloaded the Bonjour driver and then it worked.

The time machine backup is going to take 18 hours for starters but after that I'm looking forward to having constant backups on the mac.

This unit is larger than I expected, about the size of a brick. It is quite heavy, probably from the hard drive within.

Overall, I'm happy with this purchase.

    Great for amateurs

    • Written by from ELLESMERE PORT

Although i feel i know a lot about gadget I am not very knowledgable about setting up wifi networks. First up the setup is very easy. I setup using my Macbook air.

Once setup i have noticed a massive performance increase across all my device from the superhub and the range is simply unbelievable! I used to have problems in my house with range but they are completely gone now, which is great. I was even able to add a WPS printer really easy too, from the base station menu, exactly what i was hoping for :-) All in all I am very happy and would strongly recommend this solution to anyone, regardless of skill level.

    Worthy upgrade but flawed packaging

    • Written by from RICHMOND

This is a very well-designed Wi-Fi router and backup device that is extremely easy to set up and to configure both on Macs and Windows. Via the included app, it basically sets itself up automatically after you input your desired Wi-Fi network name and password. There are of course also advanced options which you may set manually if you desire to.

This Time Capsule performs better than the prior version, even without 801.11ac devices in the network. With 802.11ac devices, it will be even faster.

This contains more antennas inside the device than prior versions and also incorporates beamforming for faster wifi. The antennas sit higher and off the table top in the device which aids performance as well. When using my wifi network, things are noticeably more speedy than before.

The design and foot print is also an improvement. It takes up less space on your desk or shelf since it has a smaller footprint, even though it's taller. And, I like the look of it better than prior versions as well.

I also really like the fact that the built in hard drive can backup more than one computer on the Wi-Fi network, and it does this wirelessly (or wired). Now all the computers in my household can always be backed up with ease!

Note - Time Capsule has a small fan that constantly spins (even when the internal hard drive is not running) the AirPort Extreme does as well. The fan is not at all loud but is noticeable if you listen close, or the room is very quiet. I wonder if it will get any louder in the long term.

Another thing to note is the AirPort Extreme can backup wirelessly to an external hard drive plugged in to it and also print to a USB printer as well if you use a USB hub. In other words, you may prefer to get the Airport Extreme instead if you already have an external hard drive. This may save you some money.

A note about the product box: be very careful opening the box, if you have it at an angle while pulling the lid off, the device will fall out and could be damaged. Also, after unboxing it, you cannot replace the base of the box because it will get stuck inside the box and be very difficult to remove after that. I recommend you put the base in sideways if you want to store the box. You will see what I mean after you get this item.

In summary, Apple has another winner in this latest version of the Time Capsule! This is a worthy upgrade from prior versions, even if you don't yet have any 802.11ac devices since it also works with 802.11a/b/g and n devices, and you will be ready for any future 802.11ac device that you may get, which is the new standard.

    Quality product.

    • Written by from SALE

I've just purchased this today from my local Apple Store. By the time I got it home and out of the box, set my Virgin Media Super Hub to Modem Mode, plugged in the AirPort Time Capsule, downloaded the latest firmware via the AirPort Utility App on my iPhone, I was done in 10 mins. It was so simple to set up and I've noticed a performance boost for all my wifi connected devices now. Time Machine is set up on my Mac, and backing up seamlessly in the background. The build quality is superb, as to be expected from Apple.

    Seriously unhappy

    • Written by from Ainsdale

I bought the 3TB Time Capsule to extend my current WIFI network, act as a wireless access point for a printer and to enable wireless Time-Machine back-ups from our home network of 4 Mac computers. I have previously used an old Airport Extreme with hard-drive plugged in, which worked perfectly (until software updates to the Airport Utility made it defunct). However, please be aware: the new Time Capsule will not extend a WIFI network as suggested in the product literature, unless this is initiated from an Apple router. The only way satisfactory way to use this device is to hardwire it in to your DLNA router via ethernet. As far as I can see, the only reason to go for a Time Capsule in the first place, is so that it can be used as a wireless access point - which means it is not really fit for purpose!!! Since my DLNA router needs to be in our living room, near our Sky box, this is never going to work....

I advise everyone to read the support threads regarding WIFI set-up of this device, before even considering buying.

Mine will be going back to the local Apple Store tomorrow. What a waste of an evening trying to get it to work (not happy)....

    Airport Extreme - 3TB Blitzkreig..

    • Written by from Bangkok

This is one of the best and fastest router and Time Capsule in one product I have owned. My Belkin 1200ac is now history. The product setup took 2 minutes after I took it out of the box and connected the power and internet cable to it.

It immediately updated the firmware and asked if I wanted to connect all other devices. I hit yes and it was all over in 2 minutes.

As a PC user before I went all Mac... this product was a seamless connection for me. My Mac Book pros in the house all seamlessly connected to it. In terms of security the security of the Mac's connectivity to my older router was preserved on this and moved to point to the Airport.

In conclusion its far easier to plug and really play not like the PCs out there and pundits who want to tweak this and that. However after seeing how my iPads, iPhones, Macs and Mac Book pros connecting instantaneously I was over whelmed. My older backup PC was also a breeze in connecting. None of the 192.. blah blah blah.dot not working stuff and going to Belkin and they routing me to Microsoft blaming software configurations etc etc and after 2 weeks nothing.

Happy to envangelise this product to all my friends...and family..

    Dead! Can't be trusted.

    • Written by from Manati

It worked flawlessly and I actually loved it for my home office as a WiFi access point and network storage. It's been in a room with 24/7 A/C and the thing just died on me. Who would have thought that the latest generation Time Capsule has "corroded" so quickly. It's been only weeks and the information trusted to it is not accessible. Only knew about it by a system message indicating disconnection. That is not a warning. That was a death certificate. It died SO quickly that I never had the chance to connect an external drive to back it up. Purchase and use at your own risk. You have been warned.

    Does not work

    • Written by from Cedar Rapids

I have the previous version of the AirPort Time Capsule and it worked great - and still does. I wanted to upgrade for the faster 802.11ac. I could not get the unit to recognize my router. I took it back to Best Buy and thought of exchanging, but asked if they had seen this problem. I was told that 5 or 6 units had been returned for the same reason. Let's please have some better quality control.

    massive waste of money

    • Written by from TAMARIN

I recently got the 3TB APTC. It was very easy to set up and works well as a router, however its a COMPLETE FAIL as a hard drive which is the the selling point (price) of the device. It constantly looses wireless connection with my early 2013 Macbook Pro, which in turn means I can't back up anything.. Through reading posts, it seems to be a Mavericks problem, but Mavericks has been out for months now and this problem should have been resolved by now!!
To top it all off, to create a wired connection to my mac I now need to buy a ethernet-thunderbolt connection from apple, because my macbook deosnt have ethernet and the APTC doesn't have Thunderbolt.. really annoyed!!
Don't buy until apple resoles this issue..

Not a good router. Not a good network Disk.

    • Written by from South Colby

Very disappointed. The hard drive portion of the product is supposed to be a network disk, but it will not stay mounted. It just drops off and disconnects when it feels like it. So, when the network disk dismounts there is no backup and - for me - no security system. Very serious flaw. Would NOT buy again.

    Love and hate relationship

    • Written by from Columbia

There are 2 Apple products out of MANY that I've owned that I regret purchasing. Out of the 2, I hate this one the most. As far as the wireless part of it, it is OUTSTANDING. I couldn't ask for a better wireless access point. The hard drive/storage side of it... Completely useless. My iTunes library exceeds 1TB. So I purchased the 3TB version for further expansion and also to use as my Time Machine back up. So far, I've had to delete the entire drive 3 times in just over that many months. This last time, it has TRULY be inconvenient as I'm now stationed in Korea and don't have access to my main source which I keep on a Drobo setup due to having RAID capability. If it wasn't for my Drobo, I would have lost everything twice already. I kept myself from buying the original Airport Time Capsule because I had read the consumer ratings, most of which were bad when it came to the back up drive. Apple should have fixed this problem before releasing this product. If you treasure what you plan to keep on your back up drive, DON'T buy this for that purpose.

    Excellent Product

    • Written by from London

In response to the above review from Tim Q, If you want to extend your current Wi-Fi network the best way to do that is through Powerline wi-fi extender technology. It's cheap too. It works by connecting your router to your home electrical circuit via an ethernet cable and a 13amp plug through an adaptor. All the major router brands make the adapters. You can also use powerline adapters to run an ethernet cable directly from the mains plug socket via an adapter into your sky box or whatever freeing you to place your router wherever you want it.

This upgrade to the Time Capsule is well worth it. It is so much faster and the 3GB is a welcome upgrade to our old 1GB capsule.

Not worth the money -- just get a firewire hard drive

    • Written by from Menlo Park

This product is immensely frustrating. It may work OK initially, but wait until you upgrade to the next gen software, like Mavericks. Want to plug it in via ethernet for longer backups -- get ready to try this multiple times and return to find a "Backup Failed" message for reasons that require a lot of effort to resolve. Unless you have an office environment, you're just going to turn off the "hourly" backups out of frustration. Want to change the frequency of the backups, get ready to buy a third party app that works about half the time. Do yourself a favor, just look at all of the support topics for this product and all of the frustrated users. Yes, the concept is great and it is another slick looking Apple product, but you're paying a lot of money for basic wireless functionality that's available from other dedicated storage makers.

wireless network is terrible! much worse signal strength than older model!

    • Written by from Frederick

The signal strength from my old Time Capsule was MUCH better. It is so bad that I had to set up my old Time Machine nearby and then use it to extend my wireless network to get reliable signals in my home. It still "drops" my signal at various times (the old Time Machine never did that!) and ticks me off when I am trying to download something, listen to music, or watch a video. I have been through the setup for this thing multiple times and have even reset it to factory settings, then tried setting it up again. Nothing works. Sorry to have spent $399 for such a piece of junk!

    USB 2 Connectivity ?

    • Written by from North Harrow

Plus points: easy to set up and looks very good.
Negatives: USB 2. why not USB 3 or, even better, thunderbolt.

I bought this to consolidate my movie and TV collections, which are spread amongst various hard drives at present. Im sure it will work ok but the time to transfer 1TB of data is coming up as 2 days (hard wired)

    Super easy setup, flawless operation

    • Written by from White Lake

I've set up several wireless routers at home offices and other people's homes but this is by far the simplest setup of all. When I finished the installation process, I couldn't believe I was actually done! I thought the process went too quickly and that I might have missed a step somewhere because the setup process was so fast, but I verified internet connectivity and voila'! I set up each wireless device in our home and we were up and running faster than my Keurig can brew a single cup of coffee!

Love my 3TB Time Capsule. I've been using it for several weeks now and haven't had a single hiccup. I have a Wifi extender which is plugged in 2 floors above the router and I get 24mbps up and 5mbps down. Streaming Netflix in the spare bedroom won't be a problem with the range, directivity and reliability of this amazing product.
