L to VGA Adapter does not work with ITunes movies

    • Written by from ATLANTA

I bought this so that I could watch purchased TV shows with my iPad 4 connected to a monitor. Despite the description for the VGA adapter that says you can watch movies and shows on TVs and projectors, it does NOT work. When I play the show I purchased from iTunes, I am given a message that says "THE CONNECTED DISPLAY IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO PLAY PROTECTED MOVIES." I get the same error message when I connect my computer monitor to the adapter. Perhaps the description of this product should be changed to say that you can watch movies and shows on TVs and Projectors--EXCEPT the ones you buy from iTunes? I feel that Apple is sending me the message that I should get my content from torrents rather than buying it from iTunes. Are there Apple-branded projectors or monitors that will support this adapter? What's the point of having a VGA adapter for your device if you cannot watch iTunes

Died after less than six months of minimal use (less than ten times)

    • Written by from El Cerrito

I purchased this adapter in the Fall of last year. I'm a teacher and wanted to use my iPad Air in class rather than lugging my MacBook to present my PowerPoint lectures. I used it about 10 times at the most and it worked perfectly. But when I geared up for this semester I planned to use it again. I plugged it in and while the presentation appeared on the projector screen it immediately began to blink off and on and it did so the entire time. Thinking that it was the projector I contacted our tech crew and asked them to troubleshoot. After they did I came to class the following day and the same thing happened. They came again, had their own adapter, plugged my iPad into theirs and I lectured problem free. The problem was my basically brand new adapter. I have always kept the adapter stowed away in my iPad carrying bag and never dropped it or anything. So why is it dying? After reading all the reviews on the Apple site this is apparently a widespread and recurring problem. And some of you might say that I can just get another since its under warranty, but think about it: why should I NEED to get a replacement in less than six months??? On what planet is THAT good business??? I'm an Apple person to the core (ha!) but this is ridiculous. if I invest in the Lightning to HDMI adapter will it do the same thing??? I'm not taking the chance.

For those of you who gave it glowing reviews, or think other folks are just plain dunce-tards, I would like to hear from you a few months from now. Then we shall see if you still think this $50 piece of junk is worthy of 5 stars.

    Laggy video output

    • Written by from San Francisco

Both the HDMI and VGA lightning video adapters introduce lag to video output that wasn't present with the 30 pin adapters. Because of this my old iPad3 is better for running VJAY (audio-visual performance app) than a brand new iPad Air 2. Disappointed that Apple, a company that used to be the standard for creative types, is pushing a standard like lightning adapters that can't perform well enough for artistic applications.

    No movies

    • Written by from Ipswich

The description says you can watch movies and TV shows, but it won't work with any movies or a lot of TV shows. A message on the iPhone says something about the device not being authorised to play protected content. This would othwrwise be fine. I purchased it to watch video with an old VGA monitor while being on charge, but it's next to useless for that.
The money should have gone toward a new monitor.

Doesn't play films downloaded on itunes

    • Written by from London

This piece of kit is expensive and doesn't do what many buyers would expect it to do, which is to show films and many tv apps that play on your iPad. It works with BBC player, it does not work with ITunes, Sky TV app, Tv Catchup and others. If you're expecting it to do what it says on the box, don't buy it. Thanks Apple. That's £50 wasted.

    Does not work with Movies

    • Written by from Fremont

I bought this $50 cable for the sole purpose of watching a movie i bought from itunes on a larger screen and it does not do that. I thought it would be as easy as my kindle that i just connect and play but was a huge wast of money. Please do not buy this. You would think a movie you buy would be able to play wherever you want it to but all they want you to do is spend more money on itunes tv.

    Not iTunes Compatabile?!

    • Written by from San Antonio

I only have a smartphone, an iPhone, and I've been saving up to buy a tablet or computer. I mean 'saving up' in the most literal sense, because I was only considering iPads and Macs, and they cost a lot. I have been getting by fine without a bigger screen, especially since I bought this adaptor. I've been able to watch Netflix and it has been awesome. So, I decided to buy my FIRST iTunes video. The latest Walking Dead; I don't have cable and it isn't on Netflix. I paid Apple money for the video. I can't watch iTunes videos on external displays using a VGA connection??? Really?? Somebody just didn't think that through, and know I have to watch the show on my tiny iPhone, after paying Apple for the video, the adaptor, and the phone.

    Not as useful as expected.

    • Written by from Dundee

What it doesn't tell you, and the reason I bought it, is that it WON'T work with movies bought / rented from the iTunes Store. It comes up with a message (in my case in an iPad Mini) to the effect that the film cannot be played because the attached display isn't authorised to view "protected" films. It DOES work though with downloads from BBC iPlayer.

    Dissapointing

    • Written by from Godmanchester

I have just purchased this adapter from the apple store, i have to say that i am really dissapointed with it, i was assured both online by an "expert" and in the store that it would play movies for the iTunes Store, but it doesn't. please do bear this in mind if you are looking for one to connect to a home cinema projector!

in conclusion not very good and apple should think about this, if i could, no stars would suffice.

    Overpriced

    • Written by from Mundaring

I am happy with the quality and performance of the adapter HOWEVER I have noticed something a little strange. I have found that I could buy a cheap AirPlay to HDMI dongle and a cheap HDMI to VGA converter from China for $10 LESS than this product. That is pathetic really.

Very disappointing. Purchased to play movies on my iPad mini though TV while traveling. Trouble is, it works on some TVs, but only plays audio on others -- even identical TVs.

    Does not work

    • Written by from Charlotte

This connector does not work with all VGA projectors. I was able to get the iPad to show up on a computer monitor, but when plugged in to the projector it would not display anything. I am a school teacher, so I also tried the classroom next door with the same results. The computer specialist at my school also tried to get it to work, and again the same result. Just be prepared that if you purchase this connector, it may not work with your projector.

I bought this to play TV shows I purchased from iTunes on our family TV and every time it says "THE CONNECTED DISPLAY IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO PLAY PROTECTED MOVIES." This adapter is a total piece of junk, your paying a dollar for adapter and forty eight dollars for a half eaten rotten apple.

    • Written by from Chatham

I bought this cable so I could play my iTunes purchased films on my VGA projector. But when you try to play a film downloaded from iTunes you get a message "THE CONNECTED DISPLAY IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO PLAY PROTECTED MOVIES."

As this is the only reason for buying and using this cable this is a MASSIVE FAIL. What is the reason for this???????????? This cable is not fit for purpose - WHY is this not detailed in the sales description as it is probably the sole reason people would buy this cable - I feel cheated out of my money and very disillusioned with the whole iTunes experience now - beware do NOT but this faulty product if you want to view your legally purchased iTunes Library on a VGA display/projector.
