Works fine on MBA and windows 7 computers
My MBP and iMac don't even see it

I wanted to eject a disc that I had forgot to eject before shutting down MBA & loaded in my truck
Connected it to a MBP and nothing
Connected it to customers win7 machine and ejected disc from there

Tried it on my iMac later - nothing

    Mighty odd...

This machine does what it's supposed to do. I haven't run into any problems with it and it works really fast and dependable.

What I don't understand however is why Apple would take this out as part of the deal with buying a Mac Pro. CDs are still a very important part of in society, and to take something out that was previously part of a computer is silly. $80 is exspensive when you're already buying a new computer. Plus it doesn't offer Blue Ray. I absolutely had to buy it allow me to install my educational disk of CS6. Apple does not help its customers in saving money and tries to nickel and dime every little thing now. Also, the chord needs to be longer, or at least be blue tooth or something so it is not always in my way.

If all you want to do is watch DVDs this works just fine...
But if you want to burn an audio CD you're screwed. I've been trying to burn CDs for hours and everytime the tracks have skipping in them. I had my computer laying on a bed and decided that was the problem. Switched to a table and had the same problem...

Fine when it works. Usually it doesn't.

Bought this to use with a new mac mini without a cd/dvd drive. When it works, it's fine. Unfortunately it usually *doesn't* work. Plug it into any port on the mini and get the dreaded "A USB device needs more power" message - even when it's plugged directly into the back of the mac!

I'm ditching this one and looking for another one with an actual power supply.

Cannot burn DVD on this thing!

I need to burn a sideshow to a DVD so I first tried a DVD+RW. It would not allow me to burn to the disc. Then I went online and read somewhere that a DVD-R was needed. I went out and bought the qty I needed and spend $23 to find that it does not burn to those either. I am a new Apple user and cannot understand why the darn manual this thing comes with doesn't indicate what types of DVD's are compatible with it! This shouldn't be so difficult. Still need to burn to a DVD and don't know what to do as I can't just keep buying various types of DVDs hoping that they will work. Unbelievable.

The SuperDrive does what you expect it to do perfectly! You pop your disk in, it does it's business and then your done you can take the disk out. But...

I personal bought the SuperDrive with the newest iMac because of it's lack of built in optical drive. I thought to my self that I would NEED some sort of disk drive and that Apple had jumped the gun with removing the optical drive and going all digital media.

But after receiving the SuperDrive I have not used it once. On one hand it's a waste of £60 and on the other it shows that most types of media or programs simply don't require an install disk.

Also the USB wire is really too short! It comfortably sits below the USB ports but try and move it any further towards you and it's a no go.

The moral of the story is that only buy one if you have a specific requirement for it, for example you wish to BootCamp Windows 7 or you buy all of your films on DVD format.

Apple DVD player still has the regional lock for DVD's unfortunately some of Apple products like this DVD player is based on 1990's technology. Please spend a few dollars from the billions to update the DVD player.

I am new to the Mac industry, so I'm not up on all the latest and greatest devices for the Mac. Recently I purchased an Apple USB SuperDrive. It's a top-of-the-line product. I put in a CD DVD and it automatically imports. The Apple USB SuperDrive is a remarkable product thank you!

Purchased this when I got my new iMac as i still use CD's in my car and it works really well. I read some of the reviews left for this item and there are a mixed bunch, but so far in my experience, its worked really well and does the job well.

Good for the money and looks tidy next to my new slim iMac.

Wow! Love this product...works well with my MBAir! Response time is unbelievable. I enjoy the sleek and small laptop...hence the option of an external DVD drive. It's nice to have only when needed.

realise not everyone wants / needs an internal optical drive......but its also true that some of us NEED the drive to be internal...not yet another piece of kit to be separately carried. Please spend less on screen def...and more on redesigning the optical drive back into (as an optional inclusion) the MacBook Pro....CD / DVD remain viable storage media when you DONT want a cloud solution....VERY SELFISH of you to delete it!

I have a MacBook Pro and you have to have one of these things because the new model MacBook is too thin to have one internally. Personally I could do with a computer that's a little bit thicker, but this thing isn't that expensive and in my experience works well. I've not burned any disks but have used the drive to install software and watch DVDs. Works fine for these two purposes.

All of the bad reviews don't state which version/model year/cpu of MB their using..To trash this drive before telling us is just poor reviewing..All the newer macs with retina work flawlessly with this drive..To write all these complaints and not telling us is a waste of everybodys time and causes a lot of confusion when deciding on a purchase..

Went back to the store today to return the 1st "SuperDrive" I purchased. The CD would insert, make a bit of noise and then sit it back out. I tried all types of software and nothing worked. I asked the staff to please plug it in to see if it worked (perhaps I was doing something wrong?). They said "Oh we are so sorry! Let's just get you another one so you can get on with your day!" 4 minutes later I was out the door with a shinny new box. Guess what happened?? #2 shinny box doesn't work either!! WTH??!!

Kill my USB slot on my MacMini

I bought a USB SuperDrive 6 days ago. It worked fine for the first two days. I used it to import CDs I bought. I then didn't use it for 4 days. Tonight, I try to play a DVD, it won't insert. I try CDs, they won't go. I unplug the drive and reinsert, then repeat DVD and CD. Update software. Nothing.

I swap the drive with my bluetooth mouse dongle, jackpot! The mouse no longer works and the drive does. Swap them back, mouse works, drive doesn't.

I'd of thought that killing one USB would take them all out as they are daisy chain devices, but who knows.

    Bummer!

Aside from that, drive is quiet and very impressive for importing CDs. As for the DVD (from Netflx and brand new), the Apple DVD Player, hated it. After some mucking about, it finally started, but is noisy and hitting the menu button doesn't take me to the menu until the 3rd click.

Love my new 27" Mac but the Superdrive is a dud...

I followed all the instructions to update etc, plugged it right into the Mac (it wouldn't even turn on through a usb hub) even went to the online chat for help and all it does is take in the DVD or CD ( I tried both) begin to make all the right noises... then spits out the DVD/CD.
I thought maybe I had a "one off" dud, but after reading some of the other testimonies... I'm not to sure about that
Back to the store it goes and hopefully the replacement will be five stars

I bought this products with very low expectations after reading all of the other reviews. So far this product has been exception and does exactly what it says. The plastic base does have me a bit worried as it makes the whole unit feel as though its going to fall apart. The brushed Aluminium top is a signature of apple and looks and feels amazing. Inserting a disc seems to take a bit of work and the same with ejecting, again leaving me worried as to how long it'll last. Works perfectly with my 15" retina MBP and I haven't had a problem. yet. been used so many times even though I've had it for a couple of days. Only giving it 4 out of 5 stars because of the poor apple quality, price, it's not blu-ray and for apple standards fails epically.

    It works well, when working.

Sometimes the disc just can't be read and it takes me ages to try and make it eject...
